Terraria Ranger Class Guide — Bows, Guns & Ammo for Every Stage

Why Play Ranger in Terraria?
Ranger is the safest class for most of Terraria. Operating at range means you take less damage from enemy contact, and ranged weapons like guns and bows can maintain DPS while freely dodging. Ranged is especially strong in boss fights where staying mobile is key.
The main challenge of playing ranger is ammo management. Arrows and bullets require consistent resupply, and using cheap ammo means lower DPS while premium ammo is expensive or limited. Learning which ammo to use for each fight — and when to save your best ammo — is the core skill of the ranger class.
Rangers have excellent synergy with the Ammo Box (reduces ammo consumption) and the Ranger Emblem (damage boost). Shroomite Armor's stealth mechanic in late Hardmode also rewards patience with massive damage bonuses.
Pre-Hardmode Weapon Progression
- Wooden Bow → Copper/Tin Bow — Starting weapons; avoid as long as possible.
- Silver/Tungsten Bow — First meaningful bow; reasonable fire rate.
- Demon Bow (Demonite, Corruption) or Tendon Bow (Crimtane, Crimson) — Post-Eye of Cthulhu; best early bows with high damage.
- Handgun — Found in Dungeon Gold Chests; first gun and precursor to Phoenix Blaster.
- Phoenix Blaster — Craft Handgun + 10 Hellstone Bars; one of the best pre-HM weapons overall.
- Minishark — Bought from Arms Dealer; fires quickly but low damage per shot; cheap ammo alternative.
- Star Cannon — Fires Fallen Stars; extremely high damage but ammo is limited to gathered stars.
- Bee's Knees (Queen Bee drop) — Fires bees that seek enemies; surprisingly strong pre-HM bow.
Pre-Hardmode Armor: Necro Armor
- Necro Armor is the best pre-Hardmode armor for rangers, crafted from Cobwebs and Bones in the Dungeon.
- Helmet: +9 defense, +15% ranged damage, +10% ranged critical strike chance.
- Chestplate: +11 defense, +10% ranged damage, 25% chance to not consume ammo.
- Greaves: +8 defense, +10% movement speed.
- Full set bonus: 20% chance to not consume ammo. This ammo conservation stacks with other modifiers.
- Alternative: Shadow/Crimson Armor for critical strike focus, or Molten Armor if you want more defense at the cost of ranged bonuses.
Hardmode Weapon Progression
- Cobalt/Palladium Repeater — First Hardmode bows; good upgrade from pre-HM.
- Clockwork Assault Rifle — Dropped by Wall of Flesh; 3-round burst with good DPS.
- Megashark — Crafted from Minishark + 5 Shark Fins + 1 Illegal Gun Parts + 20 Souls of Might; fires at incredible speed; one of the best mid-HM guns.
- Hallowed Repeater — Post-Mechanical Bosses; better than Cobalt/Palladium Repeater.
- Chlorophyte Shotbow — Post-Plantera; fires 2 arrows per shot including special effects from arrow type.
- Tsunami — Dropped by Duke Fishron; fires 5 arrows per shot; phenomenal DPS.
- Eventide — Dropped by Empress of Light; fires flower petals in clusters.
- Phantasm — Crafted from Vortex Fragments + Luminite; fires 4 arrows per shot; best bow in game.
- S.D.M.G. — Dropped by Moon Lord; fires 3 extra projectiles on 50% chance; best gun in game.
- Vortex Beater — Crafted from Vortex Fragments; also strong gun option post-Moon Lord.
Hardmode Armor Progression
- Cobalt/Palladium Armor (Ranger Helmet) — First Hardmode armor upgrade.
- Mythril/Orichalcum Armor (Ranger Helmet) — Improved ranged damage and critical.
- Adamantite/Titanium Armor (Ranged Helmet) — Good pre-Plantera tier.
- Hallowed Armor (Hallowed Headgear) — Post-Mechanical Bosses; immunity to a random hit on a short cooldown.
- Shroomite Armor — Crafted from 54 Shroomite Bars (Chlorophyte + Glowing Mushroom at Autohammer); best pre-endgame ranged armor. Stealth mode when standing still gives +100% damage.
- Vortex Armor — Crafted from Vortex Fragments + Luminite; endgame ranged armor. Stealth mode with rapid movement gives +100% ranged damage.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get the Megashark?
The Megashark is crafted from: 1 Minishark (bought from the Arms Dealer), 5 Shark Fins (dropped by Sharks in the Ocean), 1 Illegal Gun Parts (found in Ocean Chests or bought from the Arms Dealer at night), and 20 Souls of Might (dropped by the Destroyer boss). Craft it at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil.
What is better: Phantasm or S.D.M.G.?
Both are endgame weapons. The Phantasm with Holy Arrows has extremely high DPS due to firing 4 arrows per shot plus summoning falling stars. The S.D.M.G. (dropped by Moon Lord) is a gun that fires 3 extra projectiles on each shot at a 50% chance, making it excellent with Crystal Bullets. Choose Phantasm for sustained DPS and S.D.M.G. for high burst damage.
How do I craft Shroomite Bars?
Shroomite Bars are crafted at an Autohammer (bought from the Truffle NPC in a Glowing Mushroom biome house). Each Shroomite Bar requires 1 Chlorophyte Bar + 1 Glowing Mushroom. Shroomite Armor needs 54 Shroomite Bars total (across all three pieces). The Autohammer costs 1 Platinum Coin from the Truffle NPC.
What is the best gun vs bow in Terraria?
Both weapons are viable throughout the game. Guns tend to have higher fire rates and use bullets that bounce, split, or home. Bows benefit from arrows that create secondary effects (like Holy Arrows' falling stars). In late Hardmode, the Phantasm bow arguably outperforms most guns except the S.D.M.G. Choose based on which weapon you enjoy more and which ammo you have better access to.
Should I save Crystal Bullets for bosses only?
Crystal Bullets are highly effective but crafted from Crystal Shards (abundant in the Hallow underground). You can generally use them freely in boss fights and farm Crystal Shards to resupply. However, if you are low on shards, using Musket Balls or Meteor Shot for regular enemies and saving Crystal Bullets for bosses is a reasonable approach.
