Overview: Two Phases of Terraria
Terraria is split into two distinct phases: Pre-Hardmode and Hardmode. Pre-Hardmode is your early game — you gather resources, build a base, and take down a handful of bosses that gate your access to better gear. Defeating the Wall of Flesh is the trigger that flips the world into Hardmode, permanently changing the underground biomes, enemy difficulty, and available materials.
Hardmode introduces far stronger enemies, new ores (Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum, Adamantite/Titanium), and a series of bosses that culminate in the Moon Lord — the final boss of the game. Pre-Hardmode Boss Order
- King Slime — Spawns randomly or via Slime Crown (50 Gel + Gold/Platinum Crown). Drops Ninja vanity set and Slime Hook. Optional but good practice.
- Eye of Cthulhu — Spawns automatically once you have 200+ HP and 10+ defense, or summon with a Suspicious Looking Eye. Drops Demonite/Crimtane Ore.
- Eater of Worlds (Corruption worlds) — Summon with Worm Food in the Corruption. Drops Demonite Ore and Shadow Scales for Shadow armor and gear.
- Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson worlds) — Summon with Bloody Spine in the Crimson. Drops Crimtane Ore and Tissue Samples for Crimson armor.
- Skeletron — Talk to the Old Man at the dungeon entrance at night. Defeating Skeletron unlocks the Dungeon and its powerful loot (Muramasa, Cobalt Shield, Magic Missile).
- Queen Bee — Smash a Larva in an Underground Jungle Beehive or craft an Abeemination. Drops Bee armor, Bee's Knees bow, and the Hornet Staff for summoners.
- Wall of Flesh — Throw a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava in the Underworld. This is the final pre-Hardmode boss and triggers Hardmode upon death.
Hardmode Boss Order
- Mechanical Bosses (any order, but Destroyer first is easiest) — The Destroyer, Twins, and Skeletron Prime. Defeating all three spawns Plantera's Bulb in the Jungle.
- Plantera — Smash a Plantera's Bulb in the Underground Jungle. Drops the Temple Key, Pygmy Staff, and powerful weapons like the Flower Pow and Venus Magnum.
- Golem — Summon with a Lihzahrd Power Cell at the Jungle Temple altar. Drops powerful accessories including Picksaw, Golem Fist, and Possessed Hatchet.

- Empress of Light (optional) — Spawns in the Hallow at night after killing a Prismatic Lacewing. Drops powerful accessories; day kill gives Terraprisma.

Preparing for Hardmode
Before fighting the Wall of Flesh, make sure you have Molten Armor crafted (45 Hellstone Bars), a long horizontal arena built in the Underworld (at least 300 blocks), and a stack of buff potions including Ironskin, Endurance, and Regeneration.
It is also worth containing your Corruption or Crimson biome before entering Hardmode. In Hardmode, these evil biomes spread aggressively through dirt and stone, potentially corrupting your Jungle biome (which is permanent and devastating). Dig 3-block-wide Hellevators on both sides of your evil biomes to stop the spread.
Stock up on money for NPC purchases and reforging accessories at the Goblin Tinkerer. Reforging accessories to Warding (+4 defense each) early in Hardmode can make a huge survivability difference.

Verdict: Ranger has the smoothest universal progression due to Daedalus Stormbow / Megashark / Tsunami / Phantasm consistently outperforming alternatives at their respective phases. Melee is most forgiving due to Beetle and Solar Flare Armor's defense. Mage peaks late with Razorpine and Last Prism. Summoner is the most consistent passive-DPS class but struggles with sustain in early-game boss fights before Bee Armor.
Common Progression Mistakes
- Fighting the Wall of Flesh in pre-Molten gear: Shadow/Crimson Armor is not enough — craft Molten Armor (45 Hellstone Bars) before attempting WoF.
- Skipping Queen Bee for summoners: Bee Armor is the only viable pre-HM summoner set; do not skip the Queen Bee fight.
- Forgetting to contain Corruption/Crimson before entering Hardmode: in HM, evil biomes spread aggressively and can corrupt your Jungle (permanent setback). Dig 3-block-wide hellevators on both sides of evil biomes before WoF.
