Terraria Ranger Progression Build — Phase-by-Phase Bow & Gun Guide

Ranger Class Overview
Ranger in Terraria is the bow-and-gun class. It trades the melee class's defense for some of the highest sustained DPS in the game, with the trade-off that you spend ammo (arrows or bullets) on every shot. Once you reach Shroomite Armor in Hardmode and learn to use its standing-still stealth mechanic, the ranger rivals or beats every other class on raw damage output.
What separates ranger from mage is consistency: ranger damage does not draw from a mana pool, so you can chain shots indefinitely as long as you have ammo. The challenge is the constant ammo logistics — keeping bullets, arrows, and specialty ammo (Crystal Bullets, Holy Arrows, Chlorophyte Bullets) crafted and stocked is a real part of the class rhythm. The Endless Musket Pouch and Endless Quiver (crafted in Hardmode) solve this for standard ammo and are mandatory upgrades.
Ranger has two viable weapon families: bows (Tsunami, Phantasm, Daedalus Stormbow) and guns (Megashark, Vortex Beater, S.D.M.G.). Most progression sets work with both, with subtle accessory differences between the two. The Shroomite Helmet variants (Headgear for arrows, Mask for bullets, Headpiece for rockets) let you specialize without changing the chest or legs.
Pre-Boss Ranger Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Platinum or Gold Armor | Highest defense available before evil-biome ore |
| Weapon 1 | Iron/Lead or Gold/Platinum Bow + Wooden/Flaming Arrows | Craft from 8 bars; Flaming Arrows add minor fire DoT |
| Weapon 2 | Boomstick (Underground Jungle chests) or Sandgun (Antlion drops) | Early gun substitute if no Musket/Undertaker available |
| Accessory 1 | Hermes Boots | Movement speed; essential to kite enemies |
| Accessory 2 | Cloud in a Bottle | Double jump for vertical positioning |
| Accessory 3 | Band of Regeneration | Passive regen helps offset ranger's lower defense |
| Accessory 4 | Magic Quiver (if found) | Underground Jungle chest; +20% arrow damage and speed |
| Ammo | Stack 200+ Flaming Arrows or Musket Balls | Never enter a boss fight under-stocked |
Phase 1: Necro Armor and the Dungeon Pull
After defeating Skeletron, the Dungeon becomes the ranger's first major progression spike. The chief target is Necro Armor — crafted from 45 Bones (dropped abundantly by Angry Bones and Cursed Skulls) plus 30 Cobwebs. Necro Armor is the dedicated ranger pre-Hardmode set: +15% ranged damage, +20% ranged critical strike chance with the full set bonus, and the ranged-weapon-themed visual that telegraphs your class to other players.
Necro Armor is straightforward to acquire — bring buff potions, a swinging-arc melee weapon for emergencies, and a Magic Mirror to escape if things go wrong. Avoid the lower Dungeon (past Cursed Skull territory) until you have stronger gear; the Necro set itself only requires the upper Dungeon's bones.
The Phoenix Blaster (crafted from a Handgun dropped by Cursed Skulls + 10 Hellstone Bars + 10 Obsidian) is the pre-Hardmode best gun. Combined with Meteor Shot bullets (made from Meteorite Bars), it carries you through the entire late pre-HM phase and into early Hardmode comfortably. Save your Handgun the moment a Cursed Skull drops one — it is the gate to every good pre-HM gun upgrade.
Pre-Hardmode Best Loadout (Wall of Flesh Ready)
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Necro Armor | Best ranger pre-HM set; +15% ranged dmg and +20% crit |
| Alt Armor | Molten Armor | Higher defense; use if you cannot survive WoF in Necro |
| Weapon 1 | Phoenix Blaster + Meteor Shot | Craft from Handgun + Hellstone Bars; meteor shot bounces |
| Weapon 2 | Molten Fury + Hellfire/Jester's Arrows | Best pre-HM bow; crafted from 15 Hellstone Bars |
| Weapon 3 | Star Cannon (situational) | Burst damage; ammo (Fallen Stars) is limited |
| Accessory 1 | Lightning Boots | Mobility; essential for kiting WoF |
| Accessory 2 | Obsidian Shield | Knockback immunity for Underworld |
| Accessory 3 | Shield of Cthulhu | Dash escape for misjudged WoF positioning |
| Accessory 4 | Ranger Emblem (WoF drop) | +15% ranged damage; equip immediately when dropped |
| Accessory 5 | Magic Quiver | +20% arrow damage and arrow speed; bow builds only |
Phase 3: Early Hardmode — Megashark and Daedalus Stormbow
Two weapons define early Hardmode for the ranger: the Megashark and the Daedalus Stormbow. The Megashark is crafted from a Minishark (purchased from the Arms Dealer for 35 gold in Hardmode if you have killed any mechanical boss) plus 20 Souls of Might (Destroyer drop), 5 Shark Fins, and 20 Illegal Gun Parts (purchased from the Arms Dealer at night). It fires extraordinarily fast — about 7 shots per second — with a 50% chance to save the bullet.
The Daedalus Stormbow (dropped by Hallowed Mimics) fires arrows that rain from the sky onto your target. Against The Destroyer specifically, the Stormbow + Holy Arrows combination is the single most efficient kill in the game — it can finish the fight in under 60 seconds because every arrow segment hits, and Holy Arrows' star projectile chains through the worm body. If you can get a Hallowed Mimic to spawn (place a Key of Light in any chest in the Hallow), the Stormbow alone trivializes the Mechanical Boss tier.
Adamantite or Titanium Armor (Ranged Helmet variant) is the transitional set for this phase. Titanium has a Shadow Dodge proc identical to Hallowed Armor; Adamantite gives slightly higher defense. Either works. The real target is Chlorophyte Armor after mining Chlorophyte from Underground Jungle — the Mask variant grants +16% ranged damage and the set bonus summons a Leaf Crystal that auto-fires at enemies.
Early-to-Mid Hardmode Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Adamantite/Titanium Helmet → Chlorophyte Mask | Chlorophyte: +16% ranged dmg + Leaf Crystal auto-aim |
| Transition Armor | Hallowed Ranged Helmet | Mechanical boss drops; Shadow Dodge bonus |
| Weapon 1 | Megashark + Crystal Bullets | Standard early HM gun; Crystal Bullets shatter on impact |
| Weapon 2 | Daedalus Stormbow + Holy Arrows | Hallowed Mimic drop; trivializes Destroyer |
| Weapon 3 | Chlorophyte Shotbow + Holy Arrows | Fires 2-3 arrows per shot; great wave clear |
| Accessory 1 | Ranger Emblem → Avenger Emblem | Avenger: combine all emblems for +12% all dmg |
| Accessory 2 | Magic Quiver → Stalker's Quiver | Combines Magic Quiver with Molten Quiver; bow builds |
| Accessory 3 | Sniper Scope (Skeletron Prime drop) | +10% ranged dmg + zoom; bullet builds |
| Accessory 4 | Wings (Fairy/Spectre/Festive) | Any wings dramatically improve fight survival |
| Accessory 5 | Ankh Shield | Debuff immunity; essential for mechanical bosses |
| Ammo | Crystal Bullets / Holy Arrows | Crystal Bullets for bosses; Holy Arrows for crowd + worm |
Phase 5: Plantera and Shroomite Armor
Post-Plantera, the ranger gets its iconic endgame set: Shroomite Armor. Craft it from 54 Shroomite Bars (Chlorophyte Bars + Glowing Mushrooms at an Autohammer purchased from the Truffle NPC). Shroomite has three helmet variants: Headgear (+25% arrow damage), Mask (+25% bullet damage), and Headpiece (+25% rocket damage). The shared chest and legs add +13% ranged damage and the set bonus grants a stealth mode — standing still for ~1.5 seconds gradually reduces aggression and adds up to +60% ranged damage and +20% crit chance.
Shroomite stealth fundamentally changes ranger gameplay. Hovering or standing in place during boss DPS windows can nearly double your damage output compared to constantly moving. Wings with hovering capability (Fishron Wings, Betsy's Wings, Stardust Wings) become enormously valuable because they let you stay still in mid-air. Pair Shroomite Mask with the Megashark or the upcoming Vortex Beater for bullet builds, or Shroomite Headgear with the Tsunami or Phantasm for bow builds.
Weapons in this phase get a major upgrade. The Tsunami (Duke Fishron drop) is the best bow before Moon Lord, firing five arrows per shot in a tight spread. The Vortex Beater (crafted from a Vortex Fragment recipe but obtainable as a Tsunami-class equivalent after Lunar Events) is the comparable gun. The Sniper Rifle (Skeletron Prime drop) is excellent for precise single-target shots and pairs well with the Sniper Scope accessory.
Post-Plantera to Pre-Moon Lord Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Shroomite Armor (Mask or Headgear variant) | Mask for guns, Headgear for bows; standing still grants stealth bonus |
| Weapon 1 | Tsunami + Holy/Endless Quiver | Duke Fishron drop; 5 arrows per shot in tight spread |
| Weapon 2 | Megashark or Sniper Rifle + Chlorophyte Bullets | Chlorophyte Bullets seek enemies; great for evasive bosses |
| Weapon 3 | Vortex Beater (post-Lunar) | Highest sustained DPS gun before Moon Lord |
| Accessory 1 | Sniper Scope | +10% ranged dmg + +14% crit + zoom; gun builds |
| Accessory 2 | Stalker's Quiver | +15% arrow speed and dmg; bow builds |
| Accessory 3 | Destroyer Emblem | +10% all damage; combine Avenger Emblem with Eye of the Golem |
| Accessory 4 | Celestial Shell | All-stat boost; werewolf at night; merfolk in water |
| Accessory 5 | Fishron Wings | Best pre-endgame wings; hover capability synergizes with Shroomite stealth |
| Accessory 6 | Ankh Shield | Debuff immunity |
Phase 6: Lunar Events and Moon Lord — Phantasm and S.D.M.G.
After Lunatic Cultist, the Vortex Pillar drops Vortex Fragments — the ranger pillar. Vortex Armor (54 Vortex Fragments + 12 Luminite Bars) is the endgame ranger set: +20% ranged damage, +14% ranged crit, and a set bonus that activates a stealth mode similar to Shroomite but with even greater damage scaling and a movement speed boost. It is the highest-DPS ranger armor in the game.
The Phantasm (crafted from 18 Vortex Fragments + 14 Luminite Bars) is the ultimate bow. It fires arrow volleys that ramp up in fire rate the longer you hold the trigger, reaching obscene DPS at full charge. Pair with Holy Arrows or Luminite Arrows for the absolute peak bow output. The Vortex Beater (same recipe slot, gun variant) chains and fires rockets — strong but generally outpaced by Phantasm.
The S.D.M.G. (Space Dolphin Machine Gun) is the Moon Lord drop gun with ~11% drop chance. It fires extraordinarily fast bullets with a chance to save ammo and is among the highest sustained DPS weapons in the game. Pair with Luminite Bullets (crafted at the Ancient Manipulator) for the best raw damage, or Chlorophyte Bullets if you need homing for evasive targets. The Celebration (rocket launcher) is another Moon Lord drop and is the rocket variant — Shroomite Headpiece + Celebration is a viable alternate build.
Moon Lord Ranger Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Vortex Armor | Best ranger armor; stealth bonus with movement speed boost |
| Weapon 1 | Phantasm + Holy Arrows or Luminite Arrows | Highest sustained DPS bow; ramps up fire rate while held |
| Weapon 2 | S.D.M.G. + Luminite Bullets | Moon Lord drop; fastest gun in the game |
| Weapon 3 | Vortex Beater + rockets (alt) | Chain explosions; viable rocket alternative |
| Accessory 1 | Sniper Scope | +10% ranged dmg + crit; gun builds |
| Accessory 2 | Stalker's Quiver | Bow builds |
| Accessory 3 | Destroyer Emblem | +10% all damage + crit |
| Accessory 4 | Celestial Shell | All-stat boost always-on |
| Accessory 5 | Vortex Booster (wings) | Crafted from Vortex Fragments; hover-capable for stealth |
| Accessory 6 | Master Ninja Gear | +10% movement speed + dodge + climbing |
| Reforge Strategy | Menacing on all (+4% dmg each) | 6× Menacing = +24% damage; alt: Lucky for +4% crit each |
Ammo Tier Reference
| Ammo Type | When To Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden / Flaming Arrows | Pre-EoC | Cheap; Flaming has minor DoT |
| Jester's Arrows | Pre-HM | Pierces enemies; good vs Eater of Worlds segments |
| Hellfire Arrows | Pre-HM late | Explosive AoE; great vs crowds |
| Musket Balls / Meteor Shot | Pre-HM gun | Meteor Shot bounces, hits twice |
| Crystal Bullets | Early-to-mid HM | Shatter into crystal shards on hit; high DPS |
| Holy Arrows | Mid-to-late HM | Spawns falling stars on impact; obliterates worm bosses |
| Chlorophyte Bullets / Arrows | Mid HM onward | Slight homing; great vs evasive bosses |
| Ichor / Cursed Bullets | Mid HM | Apply Ichor (-20 def) or Cursed Inferno DoT |
| Luminite Arrows / Bullets | Post-Moon Lord | Hits twice on impact; highest raw damage |
Shroomite Headgear vs Mask vs Headpiece
| Variant | Bonus | Best For | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shroomite Headgear | Shroomite Headgear | +25% arrow damage | Bow builds (Tsunami, Phantasm) | Pair with Holy Arrows for peak bow DPS |
| Shroomite Mask | Shroomite Mask | +25% bullet damage | Gun builds (Megashark, S.D.M.G.) | Default for most progression players |
| Shroomite Headpiece | Shroomite Headpiece | +25% rocket damage | Rocket Launcher / Celebration builds | Strong vs Moon Lord's body but weaker overall |
Verdict: Mask is the default for most rangers because Crystal Bullets, Chlorophyte Bullets, and Luminite Bullets cover every Hardmode situation. Headgear with Holy Arrows is mathematically the highest DPS pre-Moon Lord, so bow specialists should swap. Headpiece is a niche pick for specific rocket strategies and is generally not first-pick.
Essential Potions for Ranger Builds
- Archery Potion — +20% arrow damage and speed for 8 minutes; mandatory for any bow fight.
- Ammo Reservation Potion — 20% chance to save ammo; combine with Megashark/S.D.M.G.'s own save chance for massive ammo conservation.
- Ammo Box (placeable) — Adds 20% chance to save ammo; place near your arena.
- Ironskin Potion — +8 defense; ranger lacks melee's natural defense, this matters.
- Endurance Potion — 10% damage reduction; stacks with Worm Scarf / Brain of Confusion expert drops.
- Wrath Potion + Rage Potion — Stackable +10% damage and +10% crit; both stack with class potions.
- Lifeforce Potion — +25% max HP; non-negotiable for Moon Lord and Empress of Light daytime.
- Sharpening Station — Place near your arena; passive +12 armor penetration for ranged attacks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best pre-Hardmode ranger weapon?
The Phoenix Blaster is the best pre-Hardmode gun. It requires a Handgun (dropped by Cursed Skulls in the Dungeon) plus 10 Hellstone Bars and 10 Obsidian, crafted at an Iron/Lead Anvil. Pair it with Meteor Shot for bouncing projectiles. For bows, the Molten Fury (crafted from 15 Hellstone Bars) is the best pre-HM bow; pair with Jester's Arrows or Hellfire Arrows for the Wall of Flesh fight.
Megashark or Daedalus Stormbow for early Hardmode?
Both are strong, but they shine in different fights. The Daedalus Stormbow + Holy Arrows combination is the single fastest Destroyer kill in the game — the arrow rain hits every worm segment and stars chain through the body. The Megashark is more versatile across all fights and serves as your main weapon long-term. Aim for both: get a Hallowed Mimic to drop Daedalus for boss-specific use, and craft the Megashark for general gameplay.
When do I get Shroomite Armor?
Shroomite Armor unlocks after Plantera. You need the Truffle NPC (who only spawns in a Surface Glowing Mushroom biome you build yourself) to sell the Autohammer for 1 platinum. Combine Chlorophyte Bars with Glowing Mushrooms at the Autohammer to craft Shroomite Bars. The full set requires 54 Shroomite Bars total. Until then, Chlorophyte Mask + Hallowed body and legs is the strongest available combo.
Which ammo should I use against Moon Lord?
Luminite Bullets (with S.D.M.G.) or Luminite Arrows (with Phantasm) are the highest raw DPS choice. Each Luminite projectile hits twice on impact, effectively doubling your shots. Chlorophyte Bullets are an alternative if you struggle to track Moon Lord's True Eye phase — their homing makes them more forgiving. Holy Arrows with Phantasm are also strong because the falling stars hit the chest core for additional area damage.
Phantasm or S.D.M.G. — which is better?
Phantasm has slightly higher theoretical DPS at full ramp-up, but S.D.M.G. is more consistent because it starts at peak fire rate immediately. Most speedrunners prefer S.D.M.G. for boss kills due to consistency. Most casual players prefer Phantasm for the satisfying ramp-up rhythm. Practically, both are top-tier — the better weapon is the one you can actually drop from Moon Lord (S.D.M.G. ~11% chance vs Phantasm crafted from Lunar Event resources that are guaranteed).
What reforge should I use on ranger weapons and accessories?
Weapons should be reforged to 'Unreal' (the best ranged-weapon modifier — +15% damage, +10% speed, +10% knockback, +5% crit). Reforge at the Goblin Tinkerer. For accessories, Menacing (+4% damage each) on all six gives +24% damage total — the default for ranger DPS builds. Lucky (+4% crit each) is an alternative that pushes crit close to capped levels with full Shroomite + Sniper Scope. Warding (+4 defense) is only for very defensive Master Mode runs.
Is the Sniper Rifle worth using over Megashark?
The Sniper Rifle is excellent for specific single-target burst situations — its damage per shot is among the highest in the game, and pairing it with the Sniper Scope accessory gives you zoom for long-range shots. For sustained DPS, Megashark wins due to fire rate. The right answer is to keep both: Megashark for sustained boss fights and general gameplay, Sniper Rifle for finishing low-HP bosses and precision shots on specific weak points.
