Terraria Melee Class Guide — Best Weapons & Armor from Pre-Hardmode to Moon Lord

Why Play Melee in Terraria?
Melee is the tankiest class in Terraria. Melee armor sets consistently offer the highest defense values at every stage of the game, and many melee weapons have large hitboxes, knockback, and area-of-effect capabilities that make mob clearing efficient. The class scales from simple swords to the extraordinarily powerful Terrarian yo-yo and Solar Eruption.
Melee does have weaknesses: early-game melee requires you to get close to enemies (risky without good dodge ability), and certain boss fights heavily punish close-range play. Swords with projectile attacks (like the Terra Blade) and flails help bridge this gap. By mid-Hardmode, melee becomes exceptionally strong with the Terra Blade's projectile making many fights trivial.
Pre-Hardmode Weapon Progression
- Starting weapon: Copper/Tin Shortsword — Deal with it briefly, then upgrade immediately.
- Gold or Platinum Broadsword — First real melee weapon; craft from 8 Gold/Platinum Bars.
- Enchanted Sword (rare) — Found in Enchanted Sword Shrines underground; fires projectiles.
- Blade of Grass — Crafted from 12 Jungle Spores + 12 Stingers in the Jungle; pierces.
- Night's Edge — Crafted at a Demon Altar from Muramasa + Blade of Grass + Light's Bane/Blood Butcherer + Fiery Greatsword. The best pre-HM sword.
- Molten Fury or Fiery Greatsword — Good fallback until Night's Edge is craftable.
- The Horseman's Blade (Halloween event) or Pumpkin Sword — Event weapon alternatives.
Pre-Hardmode Armor Progression
- Wood Armor → Copper/Tin Armor — Very early, minimal protection, replace ASAP.
- Gold/Platinum Armor — First solid armor set; reasonable defense with ore you collect.
- Shadow Armor (Corruption) or Crimson Armor (Crimson) — From Eater/Brain bosses; great critical strike bonus.
- Molten Armor — Crafted from 45 Hellstone Bars; best pre-HM armor; requires reaching the Underworld. Set bonus: +17% melee damage.
Hardmode Weapon Progression
- Early HM: Cobalt/Palladium Sword — First upgrades; craft from respective ores.
- Mythril/Orichalcum Sword — Better speed and damage; worthwhile crafting step.
- True Night's Edge — Craft from Night's Edge + 20 Souls of Night at a Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil.
- True Excalibur — Craft from Excalibur + 24 Chlorophyte Bars; fires green beams.
- Terra Blade — Combine True Night's Edge + True Excalibur. The best sword in the game for most of Hardmode; fires green blades.
- Death Sickle — Dropped by Reapers in the Pumpkin Moon; excellent scythe with wide hit area.
- Vampire Knives — Dropped by Plantera's treasure bags; restores HP on hit, amazing for sustain.
- Influx Waver — Dropped by Martian Saucer; fires fast swords that pierce enemies.
- Terrarian — Dropped by Moon Lord; best yo-yo weapon; fires a homing projectile.
- Meowmere — Dropped by Moon Lord; launches bouncing cat projectiles; highest base damage sword.
- Solar Eruption — Crafted from Solar Fragments + Luminite; best melee weapon for mob clearing.
Hardmode Armor Progression
- Cobalt/Palladium Armor — First Hardmode armor tier; decent defense jump from Molten.
- Mythril/Orichalcum Armor — Mid Hardmode; better stats, choose melee helmet for damage.
- Adamantite/Titanium Armor — Pre-Plantera tier; Titanium has a shadow evasion set bonus.
- Hallowed Armor — Post-Mechanical Bosses; good melee set; set bonus grants a brief dodge.
- Turtle Armor — Crafted with Chlorophyte Bars + Turtle Shells; reflects 25% damage to attackers.
- Beetle Armor — Crafted from Turtle Armor + Beetle Husks (Golem drop); best melee armor before endgame.
- Solar Flare Armor — Crafted from Solar Fragments + Luminite; endgame melee armor; shield on hit.

Endgame Melee Build
In the endgame (post-Moon Lord), the best melee setup is Solar Flare Armor with the Terrarian yo-yo or Meowmere as your primary weapon, Solar Eruption for crowd clearing, and accessories reforged for maximum damage output. The Terrarian's homing projectile allows you to focus on dodging while it deals consistent damage.
Stack the Celestial Shell, Destroyer Emblem, Fire Gauntlet, Mechanical Glove, and Ankh Shield. Reforge all accessories to Menacing (+4% damage each) or Warding (+4 defense each) depending on your playstyle. The melee class is very capable of clearing endgame content including Frost Moon and Pumpkin Moon events for further loot collection.
Frequently asked questions
Is melee the best class in Terraria?
Melee is often considered the most beginner-friendly class due to its high defense and straightforward mechanics, but all four classes (melee, ranged, mage, summoner) are viable for the entire game. Ranged tends to have the safest playstyle due to distance, mage has the highest potential DPS in endgame, and summoner allows the most passive playstyle.
What is the Night's Edge and how do I craft it?
The Night's Edge is the best pre-Hardmode melee sword, crafted at a Demon Altar. It requires four components: the Muramasa (found in Dungeon Gold Chests), the Blade of Grass (12 Jungle Spores + 12 Stingers), Light's Bane (crafted from Demonite Bars in Corruption worlds) or Blood Butcherer (Crimson worlds), and the Fiery Greatsword (crafted from Hellstone Bars).
How do I craft the Terra Blade?
The Terra Blade requires two components: True Night's Edge (Night's Edge + 20 Souls of Night at Mythril Anvil) and True Excalibur (Excalibur + 24 Chlorophyte Bars at Mythril Anvil). Combine both at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil to create the Terra Blade. It fires green sword projectiles on each swing, making it excellent for ranged melee combat.
What accessories should I prioritize early in Hardmode as a melee player?
In early Hardmode, prioritize: Obsidian Shield or Ankh Shield (knockback immunity and debuff immunity), Hermes/Spectre/Lightning Boots → Frostspark Boots (movement speed), a Wings set (any available Wings for flight), and the Warrior Emblem (dropped by Wall of Flesh, gives +15% melee damage). Reforging to Warding (+4 defense) on all accessories helps survivability significantly.
Is Beetle Armor or Turtle Armor better?
Beetle Armor is strictly better than Turtle Armor. Beetle Armor is crafted from Turtle Armor plus Beetle Husks (dropped by Golem), so it is an upgrade of Turtle Armor. The Beetle Scale Mail set bonus stacks a 30% damage buff over time, while the Beetle Shell set bonus provides up to 45% damage reduction. Both beat Turtle Armor's 25% damage reflection.
