How Steel Path Works
Steel Path is a permanent difficulty overlay for the Star Chart that can be toggled on or off at any time from the mission select screen. When active, enemies receive a flat +100 level bonus — so Earth Grineer who were level 5–10 become level 105–110, and Steel Path Sorties feature enemies at level 200+. Along with increased levels, all enemies receive massive bonuses to health, armor, and shields.
The mode also introduces Acolytes — elite enemies named after each Stalker lieutenant that roam Steel Path missions and drop 2 Steel Essence each on kill. Acolytes have significant health pools and resist abilities, making them a DPS check requiring proper damage builds. In addition, Eximus enemies (the glowing, ability-enhanced versions of standard enemies) also drop Steel Essence in smaller quantities.
Despite the increased difficulty, Steel Path does not lock you into anything — if a mission becomes overwhelming, you can extract and try again. Your resources and Warframe/weapon levels are retained. Steel Path exists primarily for players who find base Star Chart content trivial and want a sustained challenge with exclusive reward access.
Steel Path Scaling Math — What Enemies Really Have
| Enemy Tier | Base Level | SP Level | Effective EHP vs Normal | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earth Grineer | Earth Grineer (Lancer) | 5–10 | 105–110 | ~22x base EHP (level + armor stacking) |
| Saturn Heavy Gunner | Saturn Heavy Gunner | 30–35 | 130–135 | ~40x base EHP |
| Sedna Sortie-tier | Sedna Bombard | 60–70 | 160–170 | ~85x base EHP |
| Acolyte | Acolyte (any planet) | Scales to mission tier | +100 above local cap | Dedicated DPS check — 2 Steel Essence drop |
| Eximus | Eximus (any type) | +15 above local mob | +115 above local mob | Overguard bar; immune to CC until broken |
| Eidolon Steel Path | Steel Path Eidolons | N/A — scaled separately | Unaffected by SP modifier | Use standard Eidolon hunt builds |
Steel Essence and the Steel Path Honor Store
Steel Essence is the dedicated Steel Path currency. It drops from Acolyte kills (2 per Acolyte), Eximus enemies (1 per Eximus kill), and rotation rewards in certain Steel Path missions. There is no cap on Steel Essence accumulation — you can stockpile indefinitely.
Teshin, located in any Relay, runs the Steel Path Honor Store where Steel Essence is spent. The store rotates a weekly selection of rewards including: Kuva (3,000 per week), Riven Slivers (for Riven transmutation), Arcane Enhancements (high-value endgame mods), cosmetic items (unique color palettes, armor sets, Ephemeras), and occasionally Blueprints for exclusive weapons.
The most valuable regular purchase is the weekly Arcane rotation — arcanes like Arcane Energize and Arcane Grace occasionally appear at competitive Steel Essence prices. Tauforged Shards (the upgraded Archon Shards) are the highest-impact long-term purchase: each Tauforged Shard slot grants 50% more stat than a regular Archon Shard, and they cycle through the store on a known weekly rotation.
Riven Slivers are worth collecting long-term as they convert to Riven Mods. Kuva is worth buying every week as it is consumed in bulk during Riven rolling.
Teshin's Store — Weekly Rotation Priority
| Item | Steel Essence Cost | Acquisition Difficulty Elsewhere | Buy Priority | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tauforged Shard (any color) | Tauforged Shard (any color) | 150 | Hard — rare Netracell drops only | Tier 1 — buy every week |
| Arcane Energize | Arcane Energize | 20 per pack | Medium — Eidolon hunts | Tier 1 if you need it |
| Arcane Grace | Arcane Grace | 20 per pack | Medium — Eidolon hunts | Tier 1 if you need it |
| Kuva (3,000) | Kuva (3,000) | 15 | Easy — Kuva Survival, but slow | Tier 1 — best Steel Essence value |
| Riven Sliver | Riven Sliver | 10 | Limited daily from Sortie/Arbitration | Tier 2 — only if Riven rolling |
| Umbra Forma BP | Umbra Forma Blueprint | 150 | Hard — Nightwave / occasional events | Tier 1 when available |
| Exclusive Cosmetic | Stalker-themed cosmetics | varies | SP-exclusive | Tier 3 — vanity |
Best Warframes for Steel Path
- Saryn — Spores spread Viral and Toxin damage that scale with enemy health. In Steel Path, Saryn's DPS paradoxically increases as enemy health increases. Best for Survival and Defense node farming.
- Mesa — Peacemaker with 200%+ ability strength keeps Regulator Pistols dealing extreme damage. Shatter Shield provides 95% bullet damage reduction, making her highly survivable. Excels at Defense missions.
- Octavia — Her Mallet ability deals damage that scales proportionally to the damage enemies deal to it. In Steel Path where enemies hit hard, Mallet deals back enormous reflected damage. The frame essentially auto-scales to Steel Path difficulty.
- Revenant — Mesmer Skin grants invulnerability charges that absorb all incoming damage. With Augur Reach for range and a Helminth subsume for damage, Revenant farms Steel Path AFK in long Survival runs.
- Rhino — Iron Skin absorbs all damage unconditionally. With Adaptation stacking alongside Iron Skin, Rhino can survive indefinitely in most Steel Path mission types. Good for players still building their arsenal.
- Inaros (Prime) — Extreme health pool (5,000+ with mods) paired with Adaptation and life steal mechanics. Not the highest DPS but extremely forgiving. Good for players learning Steel Path.
- Wukong — Cloud Walker (his 2) provides brief invulnerability when needed; Iron Staff scales very well with melee mods. His passive resurrects him on death, providing safety nets in unexpected situations.
- Nidus — Mutation stacks provide health regeneration and CC immunity. His Virulence ability deals damage that scales with his stack count. Self-sustaining and effective across all Steel Path mission types.
- Wisp — Motes provide team-wide buffs and invisibility; Sol Gate burns through Acolytes faster than almost any other ability. The best all-rounder support for SP squads.
Warframe Tier List for Steel Path
| Tier | Frames | Why They Fit Steel Path | |
|---|---|---|---|
| S Tier | S Tier | Saryn, Octavia, Mesa, Revenant, Wisp | Scaling damage, near-immortal sustain, or full-room clears |
| A Tier | A Tier | Nidus, Khora, Mirage, Gauss, Garuda, Citrine | High output with one survivability gimmick (CC, leech, or shield) |
| B Tier | B Tier | Rhino, Inaros, Wukong, Nova, Limbo, Volt | Workable but require careful play or specific node types |
| C Tier | C Tier | Excalibur, Loki, Trinity, Banshee, Nyx | Need extensive Helminth subsumes or build investment to function |
Verdict: S-tier frames carry inexperienced squads through almost any SP mission. C-tier frames can absolutely do SP, but only with Helminth subsume + Arcane investment + max-rank weapons. Beginners should default to S/A tier until they have several SP missions under their belt.
Weapon Modding for Steel Path — The Mandatory Loadout
Steel Path weapon builds collapse to three damage routes: Viral + Heat for armored single-target, Corrosive + Heat for crowd Eximus stripping, and Slash via Hunter Munitions for true-damage Slash procs that bypass armor entirely. Almost every meta SP build uses one of these three combos as its base.
The mandatory mod skeleton is: 60/60 Viral pair (Cryo Rounds equivalent + Malignant Force), 60/60 Heat pair (Thermite Rounds + Hellfire equivalent), one Galvanized base damage mod (Galvanized Chamber on rifles, Galvanized Diffusion on shotguns), and Primary Merciless arcane. That eats five mod slots; the remaining three go to crit chance, crit damage, and either Hunter Munitions or a Multishot mod depending on whether the weapon has innate Slash bias.
Incarnon Adapters are the highest-impact weapon upgrade unlocked through SP Circuit (the Duviri Circuit on Steel Path rotation). Adapters transform an old weapon (Braton, Burston, Vasto, etc.) into a competitive endgame weapon with a meter that fills on kills and grants a temporary super-mode. Prioritize the Braton Incarnon, Latron Incarnon, and Furax Incarnon for SP — all three carry mediocre weapons into S-tier territory.
Arcanes go on weapons too: Primary/Secondary/Melee Merciless are the universal pick (currently +360% damage at 12 stacks). Build toward Merciless before unranked Arcane Strike or Avenger — the Merciless line is the single biggest weapon damage swing in the modding system.
Steel Path Progression and Unlocking Everything
When you first enable Steel Path, the Star Chart appears mostly locked — you must complete each node in Steel Path mode just as you did in the base game. As you complete Steel Path nodes, you earn bonus Steel Essence rewards (a large batch for each planet cleared). Completing the entire Steel Path Star Chart grants a cosmetic sigil and a substantial Steel Essence payout.
Junctions in Steel Path have their own requirements separate from base Star Chart Junctions. You still need to complete specific tasks (defeat bosses, complete missions) on Steel Path difficulty to pass through Junction gates. This adds time to fully unlocking the Steel Path Star Chart but also provides a clear progression goal for endgame players.
Steel Path Incursions are rotating daily missions that appear on the Steel Path Star Chart, similar to Sortie alerts. Completing them grants bonus Steel Essence rewards. Running Incursions daily is the most consistent passive Steel Essence income for players who do not have time for dedicated farming sessions.
Steel Path Circuit (Duviri Undercroft on SP rotation) is the dedicated Incarnon Adapter farm. Each weekly rotation includes 6 unique Incarnon Adapters; completing the Circuit through tier 10 awards one of your choice. The Circuit costs no Steel Essence to play — just the time investment — and is the only acquisition path for most Incarnon weapons.
Best Farming Loops for Steel Essence
Steel Path Survival missions with high Eximus density are the most reliable Steel Essence farm: Helene (Saturn), Khufu (Ceres), and Mot (Void) all spawn 1–2 Acolytes per 5 minutes plus consistent Eximus waves. An average 30-minute Survival on these nodes nets 25–40 Steel Essence with no special setup.
Steel Path Defense at Tessera (Venus) or Adaro (Sedna) is the fast-paced alternative: 5-wave runs complete in 8–10 minutes and award 4–8 Steel Essence per run, plus high resource gain on rotation. Defense favors AoE frames (Saryn, Mesa, Mirage) over single-target setups; bring a frame that clears the wave in a single ability cast.
Disruption (Kelpie on Sedna, Ur on Uranus) is the Acolyte-farming meta when an Acolyte spawn is announced in the squad chat. A 4-conduit Disruption with Acolyte spawns can yield 10–14 Steel Essence in under 8 minutes. The catch: Acolyte spawns are not guaranteed every run, so the average yield is more like 6–8 Steel Essence per Disruption attempt.
Daily Steel Path Incursions are the passive income floor: 6 Incursions × ~5 Steel Essence each = 30 free Steel Essence per day for ~30 minutes of mission time. Combined with weekly farming sessions on Survival nodes, the average Steel Path player accumulates 200–400 Steel Essence per week without dedicated grinding.
Common Steel Path Mistakes That Waste Time
- Attempting Steel Path before unlocking Galvanized mods — without Galvanized base damage mods from Arbitrations, your weapons deal 50–70% less DPS than meta builds. Clear Arbitrations first, then return to SP.
- Bringing a non-S-tier frame solo without Helminth subsumes — frames like Excalibur or Loki can do SP but require specific subsume builds (Roar, Eclipse, Gloom). Solo with an unmodified base kit is a slow grind.
- Skipping Tauforged Shards in Teshin's store — at 150 Steel Essence each, Tauforged Shards are the highest power-per-essence purchase. Three Tauforged HP shards push almost any frame into safe SP territory.
- Running open-world bounties on SP for Steel Essence — open-world SP has lower Acolyte spawn rates than Star Chart nodes. Cetus and Fortuna bounties drop only 1–2 Steel Essence per bounty stage; not worth the travel time.
- Forgetting to bring an Operator build — Operator amps with at least a 1-2-3 build (Raplak/Shraksun/Klamora) stripping eidolons, and a Magus Lockdown for crowd control, are the safety net when your Warframe is downed or out of energy.
- Modding only for damage with no survivability — Adaptation is mandatory on almost every SP frame. Without Adaptation, even Rhino's Iron Skin breaks faster than expected against level-150+ Heavy Gunners.
- Trying to AFK farm with Octavia or Revenant on a public squad without telling teammates — host migrations during AFK farms wipe Steel Essence not yet picked up. Communicate before going AFK.
- Burning Steel Essence on early cosmetics before buying Tauforged Shards and Umbra Forma — cosmetics rotate back, Tauforged Shards rotate, and Umbra Forma blueprints are limited; long-term value goes to gear-defining items first.
Steel Path Squads — Coordination Tips
Public SP squads are noticeably more coordinated than base-star squads — players who reach SP have generally completed The Second Dream and have working endgame loadouts. The cultural norm: each player covers a role (clear, single-target, support, or scout) and announces their role at the start of long-form missions like Survival or Excavation.
Acolyte etiquette: when an Acolyte spawns, the entire squad converges to maximize Steel Essence drops. Standing on the Acolyte spawn point while teammates focus DPS is the standard play. Whisper-calling Acolyte locations in chat ('Acolyte at obj') is universally appreciated.
Wisp's Motes and Harrow's Covenant are the two most-requested squad buffs in SP. If you bring either frame, place motes on the defense objective or near the squad regroup point so other players can refresh buffs without chasing you. See [[best-warframes-for-beginners]] for the framework on transitioning from beginner builds to SP-ready loadouts.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unlock Steel Path?
Complete every single mission node on the base Star Chart — including all Junctions, planets, and the Zariman. Once all nodes are completed, a message from Teshin activates Steel Path mode. You can then toggle it on from the Star Chart.
Is Steel Path required to progress in Warframe?
No. Steel Path is optional endgame content for players who want more challenge and access to exclusive rewards. All base game content, including Void Fissures, Eidolons, Profit Taker, and Railjack, can be completed on standard difficulty. Steel Path primarily offers harder missions and exclusive cosmetics.
Can I use any Warframe in Steel Path?
Technically yes, but some frames struggle significantly. Frames without strong survivability mechanics (high health, damage avoidance, or invulnerability) get overwhelmed quickly at +100 enemy levels. Build a full survival-oriented loadout before attempting Steel Path with squishy frames.
What is the best way to farm Steel Essence?
Survival missions with high Eximus spawn rates are best for passive Steel Essence accumulation. Helene (Saturn) and Axi Fissure Survivals in Steel Path generate regular Eximus enemy waves. For faster Acolyte kills, equip a heavy-hitting single-target weapon like a sniper rifle. Running Incursions daily is the most consistent free income.
Are Steel Path rewards exclusive or can you get them elsewhere?
Most Steel Path store items are exclusive to Teshin's store, including the Tauforged Shards (amber, azure, crimson arcane mod shards), exclusive cosmetics, and Ephemeras. Some Arcanes available in the store can also be earned through Eidolon hunts or Railjack, but the Steel Path store provides an alternative acquisition path.
Are Acolytes harder than normal Eximus enemies?
Yes — Acolytes scale to a level cap that depends on the mission tier and have unique resistances. They take longer to kill than equivalent Eximus and require active engagement (they pursue the player). The upside: 2 Steel Essence per Acolyte kill vs 1 per Eximus, plus a small chance to drop Riven Mods directly.
What is the difference between regular Archon Shards and Tauforged Shards?
Tauforged Shards provide 50% more stat bonus than regular Archon Shards (e.g., +750 health on Tauforged Azure vs +500 on regular). Both occupy the same 5 Archon slots on a Warframe. Tauforged Shards are obtained from Netracells (low chance) or Teshin's store (guaranteed at 150 Steel Essence each), making the store the reliable acquisition path.
Can I do Steel Path Eidolon hunts?
Steel Path does not affect Eidolons directly — they have their own scaling. However, Steel Path Plains of Eidolon does spawn extra Acolytes and stronger Sentient enemies. Hunters use standard 4x3 Tridolon loadouts; SP just adds extra Steel Essence farming opportunities during the night cycle.
Do I lose progress if I extract from a Steel Path mission?
No — extracting from SP works the same as base mode. Resources collected, Steel Essence picked up, and weapon affinity are all retained. Wave-based missions (Defense, Disruption) give partial rewards for completed waves even on early extraction.
Is Steel Path Circuit the only way to get Incarnon Adapters?
Yes — Steel Path Circuit (the SP version of Duviri Undercroft) is currently the only acquisition method for Incarnon Adapters. Each weekly rotation has 6 different Adapters available; clearing Tier 10 of the Circuit awards one Adapter of your choice from the week's rotation.
