What Are Riven Mods?

Riven mods are special weapon-specific mods with randomized stats that are generated each time you obtain or reroll one. Unlike standard mods that always have fixed effects, a Riven for the Arca Plasmor might give +Critical Chance, +Multishot, and -Zoom, while another Arca Plasmor Riven gives +Damage, +Fire Rate, and -Reload Speed. The specific stats, their magnitudes, and whether there are one or two negative stats are all random.

This randomization is what makes the Riven economy so complex: identical weapon Rivens can vary enormously in value. A 'god roll' Riven with two ideal positive stats and a harmless negative can be worth hundreds of Platinum in trading, while a poorly rolled Riven for the same weapon might be worth only a handful.

Rivens exist for Primary, Secondary, Melee, Shotgun, and Archgun weapon categories. A Riven is obtained in a 'veiled' state — requiring the completion of a challenge — before it is revealed and assigned to a specific weapon. Once unveiled, it is permanently locked to that weapon and cannot be changed.

Riven Challenges — Unlocking Veiled Rivens

All newly obtained Rivens start in a veiled state with a challenge requirement displayed instead of stats. To unveil the Riven and reveal its weapon and stats, you must complete the specified challenge in a single mission. Challenges range from easy (kill X enemies with headshots) to more demanding (complete a mission without your companion taking damage while using only secondary weapons).

Challenges are randomized and vary considerably in difficulty. Easy challenges include 'Kill 12 enemies while sliding' or 'Complete an Exterminate mission without dying.' Hard challenges might require 'Kill 10 Grineer enemies with stealth melee kills while not being detected' or 'Collect 5 rare resources without a Companion active.'

If a challenge feels too difficult or incompatible with your current progression, you can obtain a Riven Transmuter from Sortie rewards — using one rerolls the challenge to a different random challenge. Once a Riven is unveiled, the challenge is gone forever and only the stats remain.

Every weapon in Warframe has a Riven Disposition value, shown as 1 to 5 dots (or bars) on the Riven mod card. Disposition directly scales how powerful a Riven's stats can roll. A weapon with 5-dot Disposition will produce Rivens with stats 2–3x more powerful than the same stat on a 1-dot Disposition weapon.

The intention behind Disposition is balance: extremely popular and powerful weapons (like Bramma, Rubico Prime, or Tigris Prime) have low Disposition, meaning their Rivens produce modest stat bonuses. Less popular or weaker weapons have high Disposition, giving their Rivens dramatic (sometimes absurd) stat values that can make mediocre weapons competitive.

Disposition values change with major Warframe patches as Digital Extremes monitors weapon usage statistics. Weapons that become extremely popular may have their Disposition reduced in a subsequent update. This means Rivens for a newly popular weapon can lose value after a nerf — always check current Disposition before trading significant Platinum for a Riven.

Evaluating Riven Stats — What Makes a Good Riven?

  • Desirable positive stats: Multishot (effectively doubles bullets fired), Critical Chance (CC), Critical Damage (CD), and base Damage are universally valuable. Toxin damage (for viral/corrosive builds), Fire Rate, and Reload Speed are situationally strong.
  • Undesirable positive stats: Impact, Slash, or Puncture damage bonuses are weak on most weapons because they don't synergize with elemental combos. Zoom and Recoil (positive) provide little combat value.
  • Negative stats (maluses): A Riven can have one or two negative stats. These can actually increase the Riven's trading value if the negative is harmless — for example, -Zoom is nearly free on hitscan rifles, and -Puncture Damage on an elemental build doesn't affect damage output.
  • Harmful negatives to avoid: -Multishot, -Critical Chance, and -Damage on primary damage dealers are serious performance penalties. -Status Duration on status build weapons is also significant.
  • Roll count matters: Each roll adds to the Kuva cost of future rolls. A Riven with 10+ rolls costs 3,500 Kuva per re-roll. High roll count Rivens with perfect stats are worth more Platinum but future rerolling is expensive.
  • Riven Disposition check: Always verify the current Disposition of the target weapon before evaluating stat magnitudes. An approximately +150% Damage roll on a 5-dot weapon is far more powerful than the same number on a 1-dot weapon.

Rerolling Rivens With Kuva

Rerolling a Riven costs Kuva and completely randomizes its stats into a new set. The first reroll costs 900 Kuva; costs increase with each subsequent roll, capping at 3,500 Kuva after many rolls. Rerolling is the primary way to improve a Riven you obtained but are unsatisfied with — or to pursue specific ideal stat combinations.

You can view the last roll's stats before accepting them. If the new roll is worse than the current stats, you can reject it and keep the current stats. This saves you from a guaranteed downgrade but does not refund the Kuva spent. Always make sure you prefer the new roll before accepting.

Statistically, achieving a specific combination of three positive stats with a desirable negative (called a 'god roll') can take dozens to hundreds of rerolls. Each roll is entirely independent — there is no pity system. This is why Riven farming can be a major ongoing Kuva sink for dedicated players.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get Riven mods in Warframe?

The most reliable source is completing the daily Sortie (three-mission chain). Rivens are one possible reward. Nightwave reward tracks, Arbitration drops, and Steel Path Circuit completions are supplementary sources. You can also buy specific unveiled Rivens from other players through the in-game Trading Post or Warframe Market.

What is Riven Disposition in Warframe?

Riven Disposition (1–5 dots) determines the strength ceiling of Riven stats for a specific weapon. High Disposition (5 dots) means the weapon's Rivens can roll very powerful stat bonuses. Low Disposition (1 dot) means Rivens for that weapon roll modest bonuses. Popular weapons have low Disposition; underused weapons have high Disposition.

How much Kuva does it cost to reroll a Riven?

The first reroll costs 900 Kuva. Each subsequent reroll increases the cost, capping at approximately 3,500 Kuva per roll after many rolls. You can reject a new roll and keep your current stats before confirming, but the Kuva is spent regardless.

Can I choose what weapon a Riven unlocks for?

No. When you unveil a veiled Riven, its weapon assignment is determined randomly within the Riven's category (Primary, Secondary, Melee, etc.). You cannot choose which weapon it applies to. This is why many players purchase specific unveiled Rivens from other players rather than relying on veiling and unveiling.

What are the best stats to look for on a Riven?

For most weapons: Multishot, Critical Chance, Critical Damage, and base Damage are the highest-value positive stats. A harmless negative like -Zoom, -Recoil, or -Impact Damage (on an elemental build) increases trade value without hurting performance. The ideal 'god roll' has two to three of these stats with a useless negative.

Should I dissolve unwanted Rivens?

Before dissolving, check the trade value via Warframe Market. Even a poorly-rolled Riven for a popular weapon may be worth 30–50 Platinum to another player. Only dissolve Rivens for weapons with near-zero player interest or very bad roll counts with no redeeming stats. Dissolving a Riven gives only Endo, which is always less valuable than trading it.
