Day vs Night — Understanding Equinox's Dual Identity
Equinox is the only Warframe in the game with two switchable forms that change her entire kit. At the start of every mission, she spawns in one form (your default selection in the Arsenal) and can switch to the other by casting Metamorphosis (her 1). The form determines what her other three abilities do — though many shared mechanics carry between forms.
Day form is offensive. Maim (her 4 in Day) creates an expanding AoE that drains enemies of HP, stores that damage internally, and releases the stored damage as a massive slash-status explosion when you recast or step out of the area. With high range and strength, a single Maim cast can store millions of damage in 20–30 seconds and detonate to delete entire Steel Path Defense waves in a single pulse. This is one of the strongest AoE damage abilities in the game.
Night form is defensive and CC-focused. Rest (her 3 in Night) is an AoE sleep effect that puts every enemy in range into a sleeping state for 8–20 seconds. Sleeping enemies are open to melee finisher attacks, which apply massive damage multipliers. Mend (her 4 in Night) is the counterpart to Day's Maim: instead of storing damage to release, Mend stores enemy HP drained from killing affected enemies and converts it into healing for the squad. Night form is the support frame; Day form is the killer.
Most players run one form predominantly. Day form Maim builds are the iconic Equinox setup — they're the reason Equinox is a top-tier Defense and Mobile Defense frame. Night form is more niche but invaluable in Disruption, Spy, and stealth-melee setups. Metamorphosis can switch forms mid-mission, but doing so resets your form-specific ability cast and is mostly used at mission start to confirm you're in the right form.

Equinox Day Form Maim Rotation
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mission Start | Confirm Day form via Metamorphosis (1) | Default form set in Arsenal; cast Metamorphosis if you need to switch from Night |
| Initial Cast | Cast Maim (4) in the highest mob density | Maim begins draining enemies and storing damage |
| Build-up Phase | Let enemies walk into the Maim radius | Mob density compounds — more enemies = more damage stored per second |
| Detonation | Recast Maim or move out of the area | Stored damage releases as massive slash-status explosion; clears the whole AoE |
| Recast Cycle | Repeat Maim every 20–30 seconds | With Calm and Frenzy augment, even Eximus units that wake from sleep contribute damage to Maim |
| Survive Window | Use Rest (3) defensively if surrounded | Day form's Rest is weaker but still provides a brief CC pause |
Maim — How the Damage Storage Mechanic Works
Maim creates a circular AoE that drains 12 HP per second per enemy within the radius (modified by Ability Strength). The drained HP is stored internally as Maim's 'damage pool.' When you recast Maim, move out of its area, or take it off cooldown, the stored damage releases as a massive slash-status pulse that deals the entire stored amount to every enemy in range.
The math works in two layers: Strength controls both the drain rate (more HP drained per second) and the slash damage multiplier on detonation. A maxed Strength Equinox at 320% can store hundreds of thousands of damage in 10–15 seconds of dense combat, and that detonation will one-shot Steel Path Defense waves. Range controls the radius of both the drain and the detonation, so stacking Stretch + Overextended + Cunning Drift gives you a 30+ meter coverage area that covers entire tilesets.
Slash status is the key damage type. Equinox's Maim deals slash, which has the highest mid-game DoT scaling and bypasses armor entirely on its bleed proc. Against Grineer (heavy-armored faction), Maim's slash bypass is what makes the ability viable into Steel Path — armored enemies don't reduce its damage at all.
Note on Helminth synergy: Roar (Rhino's subsume) multiplies Maim's damage by 30–45% additively. Subsuming Roar over a less useful Day ability and casting it before each Maim detonation is the highest-DPS Equinox setup in 2026.
Night Form Rest — Sleep CC and Melee Finishers
Rest puts every enemy in its radius to sleep for 6–20 seconds depending on duration mods. Sleeping enemies are vulnerable to melee finisher attacks, which deal 8x the normal melee damage multiplier — converting any half-decent melee weapon into a one-shot kill button against any enemy under level 200, and a serious damage threat even at Steel Path levels.
The combo: cast Rest on a group, walk up, and melee-finisher each enemy in turn. Each finisher applies the 8x multiplier, deletes the enemy, and (with Arcane Trickery) refreshes your Invisibility. You can clear an entire room of 20+ enemies in 30 seconds of methodical finisher attacks.
Peaceful Provocation (the Night augment) adds another layer: while enemies in range are asleep, Equinox gains a stacking strength buff. The buff caps at +60% strength and persists until the enemies wake. This buff doesn't impact Rest's CC (which doesn't scale with strength), but it powers up your subsumed abilities (Pillage strips more armor; Roar amplifies more damage) and helps weapons that scale with strength like exalted weapons.
Best melee weapons for sleep-finisher Equinox: Skiajati (auto-invisibility on finisher kill), Glaive Prime (throw + detonate from range), Nikana Prime (high slash/finisher synergy). All three benefit from the 8x finisher multiplier dramatically.
Day Form vs Night Form — Which to Pick for What Mission
| Mission Type | Day Form (Maim) | Night Form (Rest) |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Path Defense | Excellent — Maim deletes entire waves on detonation | Decent — Rest pauses enemies but doesn't kill them |
| Steel Path Survival | Strong — repeated Maim casts clear spawns continuously | Strong — Rest plus finishers is sustainable for solo runs |
| Disruption | Weak — Maim's slash damage struggles vs. Demolyst armor without Helminth | Strong — Rest stops the Demolyst, giving safe DPS windows |
| Spy / Rescue | Weak — Maim's AoE alerts entire tiles | Strong — silent sleep CC keeps stealth runs clean |
| Mobile Defense | Excellent — Maim covers the data terminal area | Decent — Rest holds enemies off but no damage |
| Eidolon Hunts | Weak — single-target boss; Maim is AoE | Weak — Eidolons are immune to sleep |
| Solo Endurance | Strong with Helminth Roar layered | Strong with Pillage subsume and sleep-finisher gameplay |
Verdict: Day form Maim is the go-to setup for nuke-style Defense, Mobile Defense, and Survival missions. Night form Rest excels at Disruption, Spy, Rescue, and any mission where stopping enemies matters more than killing them. Most Equinox players default to Day form and only switch to Night for specific objectives.
Common Equinox Mistakes to Avoid
- Standing inside Maim during the build-up: The damage stored in Maim releases when you leave the AoE OR recast. If you accidentally step outside the radius mid-build, the partial detonation wastes the cast. Stay inside the area until you intentionally trigger detonation.
- Skipping Calm and Frenzy augment in Day form: This augment lets Maim continue affecting enemies that have woken from Night-form Rest within the same window. Massive damage compounding in cross-form play.
- Building strength on Night form: Rest's sleep duration doesn't scale with strength. Slot duration and range instead. Night-form strength only matters if you're running Mend for healing output or subsumed strength-based abilities.
- Pairing Maim with a sleeping-finisher melee: Maim's AoE detonation kills sleeping enemies instantly, ruining your finisher setup. Pick a form and commit — don't cross the two damage approaches without intent.
- Forgetting Metamorphosis is a switch: Casting Metamorphosis doesn't just buff — it switches forms entirely. Every other ability you have queued is now the other form's version. Plan your switches deliberately.
- Building no Range on Maim: A short-range Maim covers a tiny circle and only catches 2–3 enemies. Maim's damage is multiplicative with enemy count — more enemies = more drained HP = bigger detonation. Range is mandatory.
- Using Equinox in solo Eidolon hunts: Eidolons are immune to most CC effects and Maim doesn't deal enough single-target damage to be worthwhile. Equinox is a wave-clear frame, not a boss-killer.
- Ignoring the Mend ability: Mend in Night form heals your squad based on enemies killed in the radius. It's an underrated support tool — switch to Night form for a moment, drop Mend, and topup HP without using consumables.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get Equinox?
Equinox is acquired by farming Tyl Regor on Uranus (Titania assassination node). Tyl Regor drops six different blueprints — three for Day form parts and three for Night form parts — across his rotations. You need all six blueprints plus the main blueprint (sold by the Market for credits or available from Tyl Regor's drops in low rates) to build her. Expect 15–25 Tyl Regor runs to collect everything. Equinox Prime is also available from Void Relics; both versions function identically in terms of abilities.
Can I switch between Day and Night form mid-mission?
Yes. Metamorphosis (Equinox's 1) switches between forms. The cast takes about 1.5 seconds, during which you cannot use abilities. After the switch, your other three abilities are now the opposite form's versions — Maim becomes Mend, Rest becomes Provoke, etc. Switching does NOT cost ability energy unless you re-cast form-specific abilities afterward. Use Metamorphosis at the start of a mission to confirm you're in the form you want, and switch mid-mission only if the mission dynamics change (Defense to Disruption, for example).
Is Equinox good in Steel Path?
Yes — Day form Equinox is one of the best Steel Path Defense and Mobile Defense frames in the game. Maim's slash damage on detonation bypasses armor entirely, making it effective against even heavily-armored Grineer in Steel Path. The damage scales with how many enemies are present and how much damage they have done to the radius, so dense Steel Path spawns actually boost her output. Night form is more niche in Steel Path but still excellent for Disruption (sleep CC stops Demolysts) and Spy missions.
What is the best Helminth subsume on Equinox?
Roar (from Rhino) is the strongest subsume for Day form Equinox — it adds a 30–45% damage multiplier to Maim's detonation, which is the largest single damage increase available to her. For Night form, Pillage (from Hildryn) is best — it strips enemy armor and shields, layered on top of Rest's sleep CC. Both subsumes go over Equinox's 2 (Provoke / Pacify), which is the weakest slot in either form. Subsume over the form-2 ability to keep Maim/Mend and Rest/Rest available.
How does Mend work in Night form?
Mend in Night form is the support counterpart to Maim. Cast Mend in an area, then kill enemies inside the radius. Each kill drains the dying enemy's HP and stores it as healing potential in the Mend pool. When you recast or leave the area, the stored healing is distributed to you and nearby squadmates as a burst heal. With high strength, Mend can fully restore the squad's HP in a single detonation. It's a sustainable healing pattern for missions where Trinity or Wisp aren't available.
Day form or Night form — which should I main?
Day form is the more popular and generally stronger choice because Maim deals damage and clears rooms — both essential in Defense, Mobile Defense, and Survival content. Night form is more specialized and shines in CC-required missions (Disruption, Spy, Rescue) or stealth-melee finisher builds. Most veteran Equinox players default to Day form Maim builds and only switch to Night for specific mission objectives. If you can only build one form, build Day first.
Does Equinox have a Prime version?
Yes — Equinox Prime was released in 2018. She has slightly higher base armor and energy than the standard Equinox plus an extra polarity slot. Equinox Prime relics are currently unvaulted on rotating cycles; check the Warframe website's Prime Resurgence rotation for current availability. The two versions function identically in terms of abilities and gameplay — only stats and polarity differ. Equinox Prime is roughly 30–80 platinum on Warframe.market depending on rarity availability.
