Who Is Bonemass?

Bonemass is Valheim's third Forsaken boss and the most dangerous challenge players face before the mid-game. He is an enormous, gelatinous undead creature that lurks in the deepest Swamp biome crypts, defended by Draugr and Blobs on the approach to his summoning altar. Unlike Eikthyr and The Elder — who are challenging but learnable — Bonemass can be a wall for players who go in without adequate preparation.

The Swamp itself is a threat before Bonemass. Poison Blobs, Draugr Archers, and Leech infest the waterlogged terrain, and the constant wetness reduces your stamina regen. Reaching Bonemass's altar in suitable shape requires navigating these hazards in the dark, often at night when Draugr Elites spawn.

Defeating Bonemass is the gateway to the Mountain biome in earnest — his Wishbone drop is required to locate buried Silver ore, which is the primary material for Wolf Armor, Silver weapons, and late-game crafting. Without the Wishbone, Silver farming in the Mountains is essentially impossible.

How to Find and Summon Bonemass

  1. Locate Bonemass's altar by reading Vegvisir runestones inside Swamp Crypts. These runestones mark Bonemass's altar location on your map with a green skull marker.
  2. Collect 10 Withered Bones — found inside Muddy Scrap Pile deposits within Swamp Crypts. Bring a Pickaxe to dig out Muddy Piles (they are above ground deposits inside the crypt).
  3. Navigate to Bonemass's altar — a large stone platform in the Swamp with a green glowing skull on a stake.
  4. Place 10 Withered Bones on the skull altar by pressing E while holding them.
  5. Bonemass rises from the swamp water immediately after the offering is accepted. Step back and prepare your mead and food buffs before he targets you.

Bonemass Attack Patterns

  • AoE Poison Cloud — Bonemass releases a large green toxic cloud around himself. This is his most dangerous attack if you are not immune. With Poison Resistance Mead active, the cloud is harmless. Without it, the poison damage-over-time can kill you quickly. Always have the mead active before entering melee range.
  • Skeleton Summoning — Bonemass periodically vomits up Skeleton and Blob minions that attack you. Kill these quickly before focusing back on Bonemass — they stack up fast if ignored. Stagbreaker's AoE ground slam clears groups of skeletons efficiently.
  • Ground Slam — He raises one massive arm and slams it into the ground, dealing heavy physical damage in a short radius. The telegraph is clear (arm raise) — dodge backward or sideways. This attack has a slow wind-up giving reaction time.
  • Swipe Melee — A slower sweeping arm attack at close range. Block with your shield or roll away. Parrying is possible with the Iron Buckler if timed correctly.

Fight Strategy

Drink your Poison Resistance Mead before approaching Bonemass — do not wait until you are inside his poison cloud. Activate the Elder Forsaken Power before the fight for a significant wood-cutting bonus (useful in Swamp navigation) — or better, carry any Forsaken Power that reduces stamina cost for sustained melee.

Use your blunt weapon exclusively throughout the fight. Fire arrows deal negligible damage to Bonemass — many new players waste significant ammunition trying to bow-fight him. Stick to melee with an Iron Mace or Stagbreaker. Get in close, land 2–3 hits, then step back to let his animations play out before attacking again.

Prioritize clearing summoned Skeletons every time they appear — a Stagbreaker power attack or an Iron Mace area swing can clear a group quickly. If you let them pile up, you will be overwhelmed while trying to focus Bonemass. The fight is long (3–5 minutes) — sustain your stamina carefully and eat food before the fight begins.

After Defeating Bonemass: Next Steps

  1. Hang Bonemass's Trophy on the Sacrificial Stones near spawn and activate his Forsaken Power for the +50% physical resistance buff.
  2. Equip the Wishbone and travel to the Mountain biome. Walk around mountainsides listening for the pulsing signal to locate Silver deposits.
  3. Mine Silver ore and smelt it into Silver bars at your Forge (requires a Forge Cooler upgrade).
  4. Craft Wolf Armor (Chest, Legs, Cape) and the Drake Helmet or Lox Cape for Frost Resistance during Mountain traversal.
  5. Locate Moder's summoning altar in the Mountains (find Vegvisir runestones in Mountain Stone Structures) and collect 3 Dragon Eggs for the next boss fight.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Bonemass located in Valheim?

Bonemass is found in the Swamp biome. His altar location is revealed by reading Vegvisir runestones inside Swamp Crypts. The altar is a large stone platform marked with a green skull. You will need to explore multiple Swamp Crypts to find the runestone if you do not already have his location marked.

What weapons are best against Bonemass?

Blunt weapons — Bonemass is specifically weak to blunt damage. The Iron Mace is the best single-target blunt weapon available at this stage. Stagbreaker (a two-handed hammer) is also excellent because its AoE ground slam damages the Skeletons Bonemass summons. Avoid fire arrows and slashing or piercing weapons, which deal reduced or normal damage.

Is Poison Resistance Mead required for Bonemass?

Effectively yes. Bonemass's AoE poison cloud deals rapid damage-over-time that stacks and can kill you in seconds without resistance. Poison Resistance Mead completely negates this for 10 minutes per flask. Bring at least 2 flasks (in case the fight runs over 10 minutes) and drink one immediately before the fight.

Where do I get Withered Bones for Bonemass?

Withered Bones are found inside Muddy Scrap Pile deposits within Swamp Crypts. Bring a Pickaxe to excavate the Muddy Piles — each pile yields several Withered Bones. You need 10 total. Multiple Swamp Crypt runs may be necessary to collect all 10.

What does the Wishbone do?

The Wishbone is an equippable item (takes the neck slot) that pulses and emits audio signals when you are near buried deposits — primarily Silver ore in the Mountains and Muddy Scrap Piles in the Swamp. The pulse intensity and speed increase as you approach the buried source, allowing precise excavation targeting. It is required for efficient Silver farming.

Can Bonemass be fought solo?

Yes, but it is significantly more difficult. The fight is long and Bonemass has substantial health. Bring maximum food (all three slots), Poison Resistance Mead, and Healing Meads. Focus on blunt weapon damage and manage your stamina carefully. The Bonemass Forsaken Power activated before the fight helps dramatically by reducing incoming physical damage by 50%.
