How to Beat the Elder in Valheim — Black Forest Boss Strategy

Who Is The Elder?
The Elder is Valheim's second boss, found in the Black Forest biome. He is a giant, ancient-looking humanoid formed from gnarled wood and roots — a god of the forests. His attacks include summoning root tendrils from the ground, whipping vines, and a powerful stomp. He moves slowly but has tremendous reach.
Defeating The Elder is essential for Iron Age progression. He drops the Swamp Key, which unlocks Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome — the only source of Muddy Scrap Piles containing Iron ore. No Swamp Key means no Iron, which means no progression past Bronze tier.
The Elder also drops The Elder trophy and the Elder Forsaken Power, which removes stamina cost for chopping trees — invaluable for large wood-gathering projects.
How to Find and Summon The Elder
- Find The Elder's altar — located in the Black Forest biome. Look for Vegvisir runestones in Burial Chambers (underground dungeons in the Black Forest) to mark his altar on your map.
- Collect 3 Ancient Seeds. These drop from Greydwarf Brutes (strong greydwarf variant) and Greydwarf Shamans in the Black Forest, and are found in Burial Chamber treasure chests.
- Travel to The Elder's altar — a large raised platform with glowing bowl-shaped offering pots.
- Place all 3 Ancient Seeds in the offering bowl (press E while holding them).
- The Elder rises from the ground. He is enormous — back away quickly to give yourself room.
Recommended Loadout for The Elder
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Bronze Armor fully upgraded (or Troll Armor set) | Troll Armor gives +15% bow damage bonus — excellent for this ranged fight |
| Ranged Weapon | Finewood Bow with Fire Arrows | Finewood Bow (Fine Wood + Deer Hide + Feathers) + Fire Arrows deal max damage |
| Melee Weapon | Bronze Sword or Atgeir | For emergency close combat when roots spawn around you |
| Shield | Bronze Buckler | Parrying The Elder's stomp staggers him |
| Food 1 | Cooked Meat (40 HP, 30 Stamina) | Boar or deer meat cooked at campfire |
| Food 2 | Carrot Soup (20 HP, 60 Stamina) | High stamina for constant kiting; craft in Cauldron |
| Food 3 | Queens Jam (14 HP, 40 Stamina) | Berries cooked in Cauldron; free stamina source |
The Elder's Attack Patterns
- Root Summon — The Elder stamps his foot and roots erupt from the ground in a radial pattern around his stomp location. These deal high damage and briefly root you in place. Dodge sideways or sprint away when you see him stomp.
- Vine Whip — The Elder extends his arm and slaps it across the ground in a sweeping motion. This is a melee attack with medium range. Back away or roll when he raises his arm.
- Branch Volley — The Elder fires a burst of branches from his hands in a shotgun spread. This is a ranged attack — sidestep or sprint laterally to dodge the spread.
- Stomping Crush — A simple ground stomp dealing area damage close to him. Stay at range to avoid this entirely.
Optimal Fight Strategy
- Location
- The Elder's altar, Black Forest biome
- Start point
- Position yourself at maximum bow range from The Elder
- Yield
- Swamp Key + The Elder Trophy + Elder Power per kill
Steps
- Before summoning, scout the arena. The altar is a raised platform — clear any roots or obstacles around it that might trip you up during the fight.
- Position yourself at the maximum range of your Finewood Bow before placing the Ancient Seeds.
- Once The Elder rises, immediately start firing Fire Arrows at his torso. He is a large target — arrows are easy to land.
- When he stamps his foot (root summon), sidestep left or right and keep firing.
- When he raises his arm for the vine whip, back away and continue firing.
- If roots erupt around you and restrict movement, use your melee weapon to cut them down quickly.
- Maintain distance throughout — this fight heavily rewards ranged play.
- Use stamina management carefully: fire arrows, dodge when needed, recover stamina briefly, repeat.
Tips
- Bring the Eikthyr Forsaken Power for the -60% stamina on run/jump — this makes dodging roots much easier.
- Troll Armor's +15% bow damage bonus makes this fight noticeably faster.
- If low on HP, sprint away to create distance, eat food to regen, then re-engage.
- The Elder moves slowly — you can orbit him continuously at bow range.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find Ancient Seeds for The Elder?
Ancient Seeds are dropped by Greydwarf Brutes (the large, hulking greydwarf variants) and Greydwarf Shamans in the Black Forest. They also appear in chests inside Burial Chamber dungeons (underground crypt-like structures in the Black Forest). You need 3 Seeds to summon The Elder.
What does the Swamp Key do?
The Swamp Key unlocks Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome. Sunken Crypts are underground dungeons that contain Muddy Scrap Piles — the primary source of Iron Scrap in Valheim. Without the Swamp Key, the Crypt doors cannot be opened. Iron is required for Iron-tier weapons, armor, and tools, making The Elder's Swamp Key essential for progression.
Can I beat The Elder with melee?
It is possible but more difficult. The Elder's reach is enormous and staying in melee range exposes you to his vine whip and stomping crush attacks. If using melee, equip a high-shield for parrying, roll frequently, and focus damage during windows after parrying or while he is performing a slow attack animation. Ranged with fire arrows is significantly easier.
Do I need Bronze gear to fight The Elder?
Bronze gear is strongly recommended. With fully upgraded Leather Armor you can survive The Elder, but the fight becomes much longer and riskier. Bronze Armor provides substantially more defense, and the Bronze-tier bow (Finewood Bow) with Fire Arrows deals more damage than the Wood Bow. Farm enough copper and tin to at least craft the Finewood Bow before the fight.
The Elder trophy — what is the Elder Power useful for?
The Elder Forsaken Power removes stamina cost for chopping trees. This is most useful during large building or wood-gathering projects. For combat, the Eikthyr Power (stamina for running/jumping) is generally more useful. Swap powers at the Sacrificial Stones near your spawn depending on what you are doing.
