What Is Silver Used For in Valheim?

Silver is the primary metal of the Mountain biome and represents a major power leap over Iron. Silver-tier gear includes some of the strongest weapons in mid-Valheim: the Silver Sword (balanced power), Frostner (frost and spirit damage, slows enemies), and the Crystal Battleaxe. Wolf Armor, crafted from Silver and Wolf Pelt, provides the best defense available until Padded Armor.

Unlike Iron (which comes from Muddy Scrap Piles in accessible Crypt rooms), Silver is found in ore veins buried deep underground within the Mountain biome. The veins are completely invisible from the surface — you cannot spot them by looking at the terrain. This is where the Wishbone becomes essential.

Silver cannot be teleported through portals. Transport via Longboat is necessary for large quantities. Smelt Silver Ore into Silver Bars at a regular Smelter (same one used for Iron).

How to Get the Wishbone — Defeating Bonemass

  1. Bonemass is the Swamp biome boss. Find his altar by reading Vegvisir runestones in Sunken Crypts.
  2. Summon Bonemass with 10 Withered Bones placed at his altar. Withered Bones are found inside Muddy Scrap Piles in Sunken Crypts — collect them during your Iron farming runs.
  3. Bonemass is weak to blunt damage (Iron Mace is recommended). He is resistant to all other damage types. Fire arrows do almost nothing to him.
  4. Bring Poison Resistance Mead — Bonemass constantly emits a poison cloud. Without resistance, you will be poisoned continuously.
  5. Defeat Bonemass to receive the Wishbone accessory and the Bonemass Forsaken Power (1/3 physical damage reduction for 5 minutes).
  6. Equip the Wishbone in your accessory slot (it is an accessory, not a weapon) before entering the Mountain biome.

Silver Vein Detection with Wishbone

Yield
150-400 Silver Ore per large vein; multiple veins per Mountain zone

Steps

  1. Ensure you have: Wishbone equipped (accessory slot), Iron Pickaxe (minimum), Wolf Fur Cape or Frost Resistance Mead, Iron or Silver Armor, and good food for HP.
  2. Enter the Mountain biome and walk slowly across the terrain. The Wishbone creates green particle effects around you and a pinging/beeping audio cue when near a buried Silver vein.
  3. The beeping rate increases as you get closer. Walk in a systematic grid pattern across the mountain to avoid missing veins.
  4. When the pinging becomes very rapid and consistent, you are directly above a Silver vein. Mark the location on your map.
  5. Start digging straight down with your Iron Pickaxe. Silver veins are usually 2-8 blocks below the surface, sometimes more.
  6. Once you hit the vein (appears as grey rocks with silver flecks), mine along the vein — they can be large and extend in multiple directions.
  7. Collect all Silver Ore. Each mining hit yields 1-3 Silver Ore.

Tips

  • Silver veins can be very deep — sometimes 15+ blocks down. Do not give up digging if you have a strong Wishbone signal.
  • The Wishbone also detects Muddy Scrap Piles (Iron in Crypts) and buried chests. Learn to distinguish the faster, more intense ping of Silver from the slower ping of other items.
  • Dig a ramp downward rather than straight down to make hauling ore back to the surface easier.
  • Wolves are a serious threat on the Mountain — wolves hunt in packs at night. Mine during the day and stay alert.

Mountain Survival: Wolves & Cold

The Mountain biome has two major environmental threats beyond enemy combat: the Freezing debuff and wolf packs. Without a Wolf Fur Cape or Frost Resistance Mead, spending time at Mountain altitude inflicts Freezing, which prevents Stamina regeneration. This makes combat, mining, and climbing extremely dangerous — you cannot roll, sprint, or attack effectively without Stamina.

Craft the Wolf Fur Cape immediately upon getting enough Silver for it (4 Silver Bars + 6 Wolf Pelt). Wolf Pelt is dropped by Wolves on the Mountain — hunt them with a bow before you have the Cape, approaching from a distance. The Cape provides permanent Frost Resistance at Mountain altitudes, solving the cold problem entirely.

Wolves hunt in packs and are fast. At night on the Mountain, packs of 3-6 wolves can overwhelm you rapidly. Mine during the daytime, build a small shelter for nighttime waiting, and listen for growling sounds that indicate wolf approach. A Campfire in your shelter provides warmth and deters some enemy spawns.

Total Silver Needed for Wolf Armor + Weapons

  • Wolf Armor Chest: 20 Silver Bars
  • Wolf Armor Legs: 20 Silver Bars
  • Drake Helmet: 20 Silver Bars
  • Wolf Fur Cape: 4 Silver Bars
  • Silver Sword: 30 Silver Bars
  • Frostner: 30 Silver Bars (optional alternative to Silver Sword)
  • Total for full Wolf set + Silver Sword: approximately 94 Silver Bars
  • Each large Silver vein yields 100-200+ Silver Ore (= 100-200 Silver Bars after smelting), so typically 1-2 good veins provides enough for a full set.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find Silver without the Wishbone?

Very rarely, Silver veins are close enough to the surface that you might spot them while digging for other reasons. However, practically speaking, the Wishbone is required for efficient Silver farming. The veins are intentionally invisible from the surface, and randomly digging without the Wishbone is extremely inefficient. Defeat Bonemass first.

How deep do Silver veins spawn?

Silver veins spawn at varying depths — anywhere from 2 blocks underground to 20+ blocks deep. The Wishbone signal intensity tells you how close you are: fast intense pinging means you are very close (within 1-3 blocks), slower pinging means deeper. Follow the signal and keep digging — some veins require significant excavation to reach.

Can I use the Wishbone while holding other items?

Yes, the Wishbone functions from the accessory slot regardless of what weapon or tool you are holding. You can mine with your Pickaxe while the Wishbone actively detects nearby silver. No special activation is needed — just having it equipped is sufficient.

What smelter do I use for Silver?

Silver Ore is smelted in the standard Smelter (not the Blast Furnace). The same Smelter you use for Iron also processes Silver Ore into Silver Bars. One Silver Ore produces one Silver Bar. Use Coal as fuel — the Charcoal Kiln provides an efficient coal supply.

Is Frostner or Silver Sword better?

Frostner (30 Silver + 5 Ymir Flesh + 5 Ancient Bark + 10 Freeze Gland) deals frost and spirit damage, which is highly effective against undead enemies (Draugr, Skeletons) and slows any enemy hit. The Silver Sword is faster and deals more raw slash damage, better for general enemies. Frostner is best for Swamp revisits and undead-heavy content; Silver Sword is better for general Mountain and Plains exploration.
