Iron vs Bronze Armor in Valheim — When to Upgrade & What to Skip

Why Armor Rating Matters in Valheim
Armor rating in Valheim reduces incoming physical damage by a percentage based on the difference between your armor total and the attacker's damage value. Higher armor rating means fewer hits to kill you — particularly relevant against strong enemies like Trolls, Draugr Elites, and boss attacks. The jump from Bronze to Iron armor is one of the most impactful single upgrades in early-to-mid-game progression.
Valheim uses a damage reduction formula where armor points reduce incoming damage directly. Each additional armor point beyond a certain threshold provides diminishing returns, but the difference between Bronze (24 total at base) and Iron (42 total at base) is significant enough that enemies dealing 60–80 damage per hit will hit noticeably softer against Iron.
Movement penalty is also relevant: all heavy armor in Valheim reduces your movement speed slightly. Bronze Armor and Iron Armor have similar movement penalties at equivalent upgrade levels, so transitioning to Iron does not meaningfully change your mobility.
Bronze vs Iron Armor — Stats at Each Upgrade Level
| Stat | Bronze Armor (Base/Level 4) | Iron Armor (Base/Level 4) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet Armor | Helmet Armor | 6 / 14 | 10 / 18 |
| Chest Armor | Chest Armor | 10 / 18 | 14 / 22 |
| Legs Armor | Legs Armor | 8 / 16 | 12 / 20 |
| Total Armor (Base) | Total Armor (Base) | 24 | 36 |
| Total Armor (Max Level 4) | Total Armor (Level 4) | 48 | 60 |
| Movement Speed Penalty | Movement Penalty | Moderate (similar to Iron) | Moderate (similar to Bronze) |
| Crafting Cost (Base Set) | Crafting Cost (Base Set) | ~30 Bronze total (Chest+Legs+Helm) | ~60 Iron total (Chest+Legs+Helm) |
| Upgrade Cost to Level 4 | Upgrade Cost (per piece, L4) | High Bronze + Leather Scraps | High Iron + Leather Scraps / Deer Hide |
| When Available | When Available | After defeating Eikthyr; Black Forest copper and tin mining | After defeating The Elder; Swamp crypt Iron Scrap mining |
Verdict: Iron Armor is clearly superior in armor value at every upgrade tier. Base Iron Armor (36 total) exceeds maximally upgraded Bronze Armor (48 total) only at Bronze Level 4 vs Iron Level 0, which means transitioning to Iron immediately upon availability is better value. Spend your Iron on armor before upgrading weapons if you are struggling to survive.
Crafting Cost Comparison
Bronze Armor requires Bronze (smelted from 2 Copper + 1 Tin), Leather Scraps, and Deer Hide for upgrades. The base set (Helm, Chest, Legs) costs approximately 30 Bronze total — which requires 60 Copper and 30 Tin ore, plus significant smelting time. Bronze is available after defeating Eikthyr and acquiring the Antler Pickaxe for ore mining.
Iron Armor requires Iron ingots (smelted from Iron Scrap found in Swamp Crypt Muddy Scrap Piles), Leather Scraps, and Deer Hide. The base set costs approximately 60 Iron total, plus upgrade costs. Iron is generally harder to acquire initially due to Swamp Crypt navigation and the 2-Scrap-to-1-Iron smelting ratio, but each Muddy Pile yields substantial quantities.
The key insight: upgrading Bronze Armor from Level 2 to Level 4 costs significant additional Bronze that could instead be used to smelt into early Iron-equivalent progression if you have unlocked Iron. Once Iron is accessible via Swamp crypts, there is almost never a reason to max-upgrade Bronze Armor.
When to Keep Bronze, When to Go Iron
- Keep Bronze Armor at Level 1 or 2: If you are in the Black Forest or preparing for The Elder fight and Iron is not yet available, upgrading Bronze to L2 is a solid quality-of-life improvement for modest Bronze cost.
- Skip Bronze Level 3–4: The upgrade cost is high relative to the benefit, and you should transition to Iron as soon as Swamp access is available. Level 3 and 4 Bronze upgrades are wasted resources that could fund your Iron Armor set.
- Go to Iron immediately after The Elder: The Elder drops the Swamp Key, which unlocks Swamp Crypts where Iron Scrap is found. As soon as you have the Swamp Key and enough Iron for a chest piece, start the Iron set. Iron Chest is the most impactful single piece — craft it first.
- Upgrade priority within Iron set: Chest (most armor per piece), then Legs, then Helmet. Within each piece, upgrade 1–2 levels at a time as Iron becomes available, rather than maxing one piece first.
- Troll Leather Armor alternative: Some players skip Bronze Armor entirely in favor of Troll Leather Armor (dropped by Trolls in Black Forest). Troll Leather provides lower armor than Bronze but no movement penalty. This is a valid speedrun-adjacent strategy but leaves you more vulnerable to physical damage.

Frequently asked questions
Is Iron Armor worth it in Valheim?
Absolutely yes. Iron Armor provides roughly 50% more armor than Bronze at equivalent levels and is the best available armor for Swamp and Mountain biome progression. The Iron farming cost (Swamp Crypt runs) is well worth the protection upgrade. Transition to Iron as soon as The Elder is defeated and the Swamp Key is obtained.
Should I upgrade Bronze Armor to max level?
Generally no. Upgrading Bronze to Level 3 or 4 is a significant Bronze investment that could be better spent elsewhere (Bronze weapons, upgrades). Level 1 or 2 Bronze is sufficient for surviving the Black Forest and preparing for The Elder. After that, transition to Iron without maxing Bronze.
When does Iron Armor become available?
Iron Armor becomes available after defeating The Elder, obtaining the Swamp Key, and mining Iron Scrap from Muddy Scrap Piles inside Swamp Crypts. Iron Scrap is smelted into Iron ingots at the Smelter (2 Scrap = 1 Iron).
What is better than Iron Armor in Valheim?
Padded Armor (Iron + Linen Thread) is the next tier after Iron, providing superior protection for Plains biome content. Wolf Armor (Silver + Wolf Pelt) is the Mountain-biome alternative that provides Frost Resistance passively. For most progression, go Iron → Padded Armor as the primary upgrade path.
Is Troll Leather Armor better than Bronze Armor?
Troll Leather Armor provides lower armor than Bronze but comes with no movement speed penalty. This makes it popular for speed-focused players or those who prefer mobility over raw protection. For standard play, Bronze provides better survivability against physical hits. Both are valid choices at the Black Forest tier — it depends on your playstyle.
