Terraria Events Guide — All Invasions, Moons & How to Trigger Them

Terraria Events Overview
Terraria's events are time-limited spawn replacements that fill your screen with themed enemies for either a fixed wave count or a fixed in-game duration. They provide rare drops you can't get elsewhere, NPC unlocks (Goblin Tinkerer arrives after Goblin Army defeated, Pirate after Pirate Invasion defeated, etc.), and major progression gear especially in late Hardmode (Horseman's Blade, North Pole, Cosmic Car Key).
Events come in two flavors: random/automatic (Blood Moon, Solar Eclipse, Goblin Army at certain progression points) and player-summoned via consumable items (Pumpkin Moon Medallion, Naughty Present, Eternia Crystal, Celestial Sigil). Once you have the summon items, you can chain-trigger events in your prepared arena for efficient farming runs.
The big payoff events are Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon — both are wave-based survival events with the rarest and most valuable drops gated behind their final waves. Reach wave 15 of Pumpkin Moon for Pumpking drops; reach wave 20 of Frost Moon for Ice Queen / Santa-NK1 drops. These are end-game farms that require optimized arenas and full endgame gear.

Blood Moon — Random Night Event
Blood Moon is a random night event with a 1-in-9 chance to trigger each night once you have at least 120 HP. The screen tints red, ambient music swaps to the Blood Moon theme, and unique enemy variants spawn: Blood Zombies, Drippler (flying blood drops), and the rare Goblin Shark in Ocean biomes. NPCs cannot leave their houses during a Blood Moon, and enemies can break wooden doors — fortify your base with stone or metal doors before nightfall.
Drops include the Money Trough (right-click summons a portable Piggy Bank), Bloody Machete (throwing weapon), Drippler Clot (Hardmode), and unique fish caught only during Blood Moons. In 1.4+, Bloody Tear consumable lets you trigger Blood Moons on demand once you've experienced one naturally. Dreadnautilus (caught by fishing in a Blood Moon with the Blood Moon Fishing Rod) drops the Sanguine Staff — a top-tier summoner minion.
Blood Moon farming is mostly opportunistic: when one triggers naturally, use the time to fish, kill Goblin Sharks for crates, and stockpile Drippler Clots if you're in Hardmode. The event ends at dawn. Don't sleep through it — the unique drops are worth the inconvenience.
Goblin Army and Pirate Invasion
Goblin Army triggers automatically after you break your first Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart and have 200+ HP. After the first defeat, it can be re-triggered with a Goblin Battle Standard (crafted from 10 Tattered Cloth dropped by event Goblins). The army spawns Goblin Peons, Sorcerers (teleporting magic users), Warriors, and Archers, plus the rare Goblin Summoner in Hardmode versions. Defeating the army unlocks the Goblin Tinkerer NPC — the most important NPC in the game (reforges accessories and weapons).
Pirate Invasion is the Hardmode equivalent. It triggers randomly at dawn with a 1-in-9 chance (after any Mech Boss kill) or via Pirate Map (rare drop from Ocean enemies in Hardmode). Pirate enemies include Pirate Deckhand, Pirate Crossbower, Pirate Captain, and the boss-tier Flying Dutchman ship that drops the Pirate Staff (summoner) and Coin Gun. Defeating it unlocks the Pirate NPC who sells the Bunny Cannon, Pirate-themed vanity, and the Cannon.
Both events are best fought at your main base after preparing wave-arena defenses. Lava pits in front of your base kill standard enemies, while you snipe the boss/special enemies from a defensive perch. Bring Battle Potion + Water Candle to accelerate spawns and finish faster.
Solar Eclipse
Solar Eclipse is a random Hardmode daytime event with a 1-in-20 chance per dawn after you've defeated any Mechanical Boss. The screen darkens to a green-yellow tint and unique daytime monsters spawn: Mothron (the most important enemy — drops Broken Hero Sword, required for Terra Blade), Frankenstein, Swamp Thing, Vampire (drops Moon Stone for Celestial Stone craft), Reaper (drops Death Sickle), and Eyezor (drops Eye Spring pet).
Solar Tablet — crafted from 8 Solar Tablet Fragments found in Jungle Temple chests post-Plantera — lets you trigger Solar Eclipses on demand. Mothron drops Broken Hero Sword roughly 50% of the time post-Plantera, so 2-3 Mothron kills give you the Broken Hero Sword needed for Terra Blade. After Golem, additional drops unlock including Mothron Wings.
Solar Eclipse spawns are relatively dense, making it efficient even without spawn boosters. Set up your main base with elevated platforms, use the same arena as for Pumpkin/Frost Moon farming, and clear Eclipses whenever they trigger naturally. The Death Sickle from Reapers is an excellent melee weapon for early/mid Hardmode.
Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon — The Endgame Farms
Pumpkin Moon (summoned with Pumpkin Moon Medallion — Hallowed Bar + Pumpkin + Ectoplasm at a Mythril Anvil) is a 15-wave nighttime survival event. The night lasts ~15 in-game minutes and the event ends at dawn regardless of progress, so wave-clearing speed matters. Each wave spawns more dangerous enemies: Scarecrows (waves 1-7), Splinterlings (waves 4-12), Hellhounds (waves 5-12), Mourning Wood mini-boss (wave 4+), and the wave 15 boss Pumpking.
Pumpking drops the Horseman's Blade (best AoE melee weapon), Raven Staff (summoner), Stake Launcher (ranger), Spooky Twig (for Spooky Wood/Armor recipes), and Spooky Hook. The full Spooky Armor set requires hundreds of Spooky Wood — typically requires 5-10 wave-15 clears to gather enough.
Frost Moon (summoned with Naughty Present — Ectoplasm + Silk + Souls of Fright at a Mythril Anvil) is the harder version with 20 waves. The wave 20 bosses Ice Queen and Santa-NK1 drop the North Pole (snowflake-spear melee weapon, exceptional), Snowman Cannon (rocket launcher), Christmas Tree Sword (extreme high damage), Reindeer Bells (mount), and Festive Wings. The first 12 waves are similar difficulty to Pumpkin Moon; waves 15-20 spike dramatically and require full endgame gear.
Pumpkin Moon / Frost Moon Arena Setup
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Platform Layers | 4-5 horizontal rows, 25 blocks apart | Layered fighting space; reset fall damage by climbing back up |
| Heart Lantern Spam | Place every 10 blocks at every layer | Aura HP regen; with stacks of 8-12, regen is enormous |
| Campfire Spam | Place every 10 blocks alongside Heart Lanterns | Stacks with Heart Lanterns |
| Honey Pool | 3-block-wide pool in central layer | Honey buff for +1 HP/s extra regen |
| Buff Stations Cluster | Sharpening Station + Ammo Box + Crystal Ball + Bewitching Table + Bast Statue + Sunflower | All in one corner; covers all classes |
| Lava Pit (optional) | Thin lava layer below bottom platform | Auto-kills standard enemies that fall in (Splinterlings, Hellhounds) |
| Spawn Booster | Water Candle placed + Battle Potion active | Doubles wave throughput |
| Class Weapon | Solar Eruption (melee), Phantasm (ranger), Last Prism (mage), Stardust Dragon (summoner) | Mourning Wood / Pumpking require sustained DPS — bring your strongest |
Martian Madness and Lunar Events
Martian Madness triggers when a Martian Probe (rare hovering enemy that spawns in the Space layer post-Golem) successfully scans your character — it flies away and the event begins ~30 seconds later. Martian enemies are highly varied: Scutlix mounts (ride one for vanity), Brain Scrambler (mind-control debuff), Gigazapper (ranged), Tesla Turret (sentry), and the boss-tier Martian Saucer.
Martian Saucer is one of the toughest non-Lunar fights: heavily armored, fires multiple lasers and missiles simultaneously, and requires sustained ranged DPS to take down. Its drops are exceptional: Cosmic Car Key (the best mount in the game — fast horizontal/vertical flight), Influx Waver (melee), Charged Blaster Cannon (mage), Electrosphere Launcher (ranger rocket), Anti-Gravity Hook (grappling hook with flight). The Cosmic Car Key alone makes farming Martian Madness worthwhile through endgame.
Lunar Events trigger after defeating Lunatic Cultist. The four Celestial Pillars (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust) spawn across the map. Defeat each pillar's enemies (kill 100/150 enemies in its zone) to drop the pillar's shield, then attack the pillar directly. Pillar drops include their respective Fragments (Solar/Vortex/Nebula/Stardust) used to craft endgame armor and weapons. Defeating all four spawns Moon Lord 60 seconds later.
Event Loot Tier Comparison
| Event | Top Drop | Difficulty | Phase to Run | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goblin Army | Goblin Army | Goblin Tinkerer NPC (reforges) | Easy | Pre-HM, do once + farm Tattered Cloth for Standards |
| Pirate Invasion | Pirate Invasion | Coin Gun, Pirate Staff | Medium | Early HM |
| Old One's Army T1 | Old One's Army T1 | Tavernkeep gear, sentries | Easy | Pre-HM |
| Old One's Army T2/T3 | Old One's Army T2/T3 | Tier 2/3 Tavernkeep sets, Betsy's Wings | Hard | Post-Mech / Post-Golem |
| Solar Eclipse | Solar Eclipse | Death Sickle, Broken Hero Sword | Medium | Mid HM (post-Mech) |
| Pumpkin Moon | Pumpkin Moon | Horseman's Blade, Witch's Broom mount | Hard (wave 15) | Post-Plantera |
| Frost Moon | Frost Moon | North Pole, Snowman Cannon, Festive Wings | Very Hard (wave 20) | Post-Plantera / Pre-Lunar |
| Martian Madness | Martian Madness | Cosmic Car Key (best mount), Influx Waver | Hard | Post-Golem |
| Lunar Events | Lunar Events | Fragments for endgame armor | Very Hard | Post-Cultist |
Verdict: Priority farms by phase: Pirate (early HM, Coin Gun), Solar Eclipse (mid HM, Broken Hero Sword for Terra Blade), Pumpkin Moon (post-Plantera, Spooky Wood and Horseman's Blade), Martian Madness (post-Golem, Cosmic Car Key), Frost Moon (pre-Lunar, North Pole for melee). Old One's Army T3 is the class-specific Tavernkeep gear farm.

Frequently asked questions
How do I trigger a Blood Moon on demand?
In 1.4+, after experiencing a natural Blood Moon, enemies during Blood Moons drop the Bloody Tear consumable (rare). Use the Bloody Tear at night to immediately trigger another Blood Moon. Before 1.4, Blood Moons were random-only with a 1-in-9 nightly chance once you had 120+ HP. Save Bloody Tears for when you specifically need Dreadnautilus fishing (for Sanguine Staff) or Drippler Clot farming.
What's the best event to farm for early Hardmode gear?
Pirate Invasion is the standout early Hardmode event. The Coin Gun is excellent for Hardmode gold farming, Pirate Staff is a top-tier early HM summoner minion, and the event unlocks the Pirate NPC. Solar Eclipse comes second — Death Sickle (from Reapers) is a strong mid-HM melee weapon, and Broken Hero Sword from Mothron is required for Terra Blade crafting. Both are worth running as soon as they're available.
How long does Pumpkin Moon last?
Pumpkin Moon lasts the full in-game night, from ~7:30 PM to 4:30 AM (about 15 real-time minutes). The event ends automatically at dawn regardless of which wave you're on, so faster wave clearing means more attempts at the wave 15 Pumpking drops. With endgame gear and a proper arena, expert players reach wave 15 in 8-10 minutes, leaving 5 minutes of Pumpking farming before dawn ends the event.
Can I farm Old One's Army indefinitely?
Yes. Each Eternia Crystal triggers a new Old One's Army run, and you can buy additional Eternia Crystals from the Tavernkeep using Defender Medals (earned from previous OOA runs). The event is repeatable as many times as you want. Tier 3 runs (post-Golem) drop the highest-tier Tavernkeep gear and the most Defender Medals per run, making them the meta farm for class-specific endgame Tavernkeep sets.
What's the easiest way to trigger Martian Madness?
After defeating Golem, fly to the Space layer (top of the map, white background) — Martian Probes hover at that elevation and have a chance to spawn each minute. When a Probe sees you (it scans with a green beam), don't kill it — let it fly away. The event triggers ~30 seconds after the Probe escapes. If you kill the Probe before it escapes, no event triggers. Some players build a 'Probe trap': a small enclosed sky platform where they wait for Probes to spawn, then deliberately let them complete the scan.
Are Lunar Events the same as Moon Lord?
Lunar Events are the four Celestial Pillars (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust) that spawn after killing Lunatic Cultist. They are not Moon Lord himself — they are the prerequisite event. After defeating all four Pillars, the Celestial Event ends and Moon Lord spawns 60 seconds later. You can also skip the Lunar Events entirely by crafting a Celestial Sigil (20 of each fragment) to summon Moon Lord directly, useful for chain-farming Moon Lord after the first cycle.
Does the Old One's Army Tier 3 fight count as a boss for Pylons?
Yes. Defeating Old One's Army Tier 3 counts as a boss kill for various progression triggers, including unlocking certain Tavernkeep gear and counting toward NPC happiness milestones. The Tier 3 event also raises Defender Medal yield significantly, making it the meta farm for Tavernkeep gear once you've cleared Golem.
