How NPC Happiness Works

Each NPC has a 'happiness level' (Excited, Content, Happy, Comfortable, Crowded, Hate). Happiness depends on three factors: (1) preferred biome, (2) loved/liked/disliked/hated neighbors, and (3) crowding (more than 4 NPCs nearby = crowded penalty).

Each NPC has a preferred biome where they're happiest. The Forest is the universal 'OK' biome — every NPC tolerates it. Snow is loved by Mechanic and Cyborg. Desert by Arms Dealer and Nurse. Each pairing should have BOTH NPCs in their preferred or 'liked' biome to maximize happiness.

Neighbor relationships also matter: Guide likes Clothier; Mechanic likes Goblin Tinkerer; Nurse likes Arms Dealer; Wizard likes Painter; Truffle likes Dryad. Place pairs in their preferred biome with their preferred neighbor for 'Excited' happiness — the best state.

At Happiness 'Excited' or higher (~85%+), the biome NPCs will sell their respective pylon. At lower happiness, the pylon is not available for purchase. So step 1 of building a pylon network: place compatible NPC pairs in each biome.

Optimal Pylon Network Layout

A complete pylon network has 7 active pylons (Forest, Snow, Desert, Jungle, Mushroom, Hallow, Ocean) plus 1 special Underground pylon. The Mushroom biome requires either a natural Mushroom biome surface or a man-made one (Mushroom Biome in Sky kit = Mushroom Biome bricks + Mushroom NPC requirements).

Layout strategy: build a 'Main Town' in the Forest where you keep Guide, Merchant, Nurse, Demolitionist, Dye Trader, etc. Around this Main Town, position pylon outposts in each major biome. Each outpost has 2 NPCs assigned to it — usually the 'preferred' pairing for that biome.

Distance matters: pylon-to-pylon distance must be at least 30+ tiles for both pylons to function. Don't cluster pylons in one area. Keep them spread out across the surface and underground biomes. Travel between pylons via the in-game map (right-click a pylon icon = fast travel).

Pylon Pricing and Discount Strategy

Each pylon has a fixed price from the NPC selling it (typically 1 Platinum coin = 100 Gold = 10000 Silver). However, NPC happiness affects pricing — Excited NPCs sell at a 25% discount; Content NPCs at normal price; Disliked or Hated NPCs at 25-50% markup.

Strategy: set up the perfect NPC pairing in each biome to get Excited status. The first pylon purchase gets the 25% discount. After that, you also get prices reduced on all OTHER goods that NPC sells (potions, ammo, materials). NPCs in Excited state are simply more economical to buy from.

Crowding penalty: if you have 4+ NPCs in a small area, every NPC there takes a -50% happiness penalty. Don't cluster all your NPCs in one big tower — spread them out across biomes. Build small 2-NPC outposts in each biome rather than one 15-NPC mega-town.

Verdict: Start with Forest + Snow + Desert + Jungle pylons in Pre-Hardmode. Add Mushroom + Hallow + Ocean + Underground in Hardmode as new NPCs unlock. The full 8-pylon network only completes in Late Hardmode.

Setting Up the Mushroom Biome Pylon (Hardest)

The Mushroom biome pylon requires the Truffle NPC, who only spawns when there's a surface-level Mushroom Biome with proper conditions. To create one: dig out a 80×40-tile area on the surface (or floating in the sky), place Mud Blocks throughout, and plant Mushroom Grass Seeds (sold by Dryad after Eye of Cthulhu).

The Mushroom Biome must be 100+ Mushroom-Grass-tiles to count as a biome. Once placed, Truffle moves in immediately (usually within 1 day). Position Dryad next to Truffle in the Mushroom outpost — Dryad loves Truffle, providing the happiness bonus needed for the Mushroom pylon.

Critical: don't place this in the underground or sky. The Mushroom biome must be on the surface (above ground level 0) for Truffle to spawn. If your Mushroom area is underground, you'll get the Mushroom biome environment but Truffle won't move in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum happiness for a pylon to work?

An NPC needs to be at 'Excited' status (happiness >85%) to sell their biome pylon. Lower happiness (Happy, Content) means the pylon is not for sale. Get NPCs to Excited by placing them in their preferred biome with a preferred neighbor and avoiding crowding (no more than 4 NPCs in a 25-tile radius).

Can I use a pylon if the biome conditions change?

Yes, once a pylon is built, it remains functional even if the biome changes around it. However, the pylon network requires you to have at least 2 NPCs in 'happiness Excited' state in the pylon's biome at all times. If you accidentally damage the biome (place too much wood/stone, breaking biome counts), the pylon will deactivate until you restore the biome.

Do NPCs share happiness with neighbors?

Yes — NPC happiness improves when paired with a 'liked' or 'loved' neighbor. Mechanic + Goblin Tinkerer love each other; Mechanic + Cyborg also love. Witch Doctor + Dryad love each other. Use these pairings to easily hit 'Excited' status.

Can I move pylons after placing them?

Yes — pylons can be moved like any block. Place the pylon (bought from NPC), and you can break it later with a pickaxe and re-place. The pylon stays in your inventory. The biome it's in must satisfy happiness requirements at the new location.

What if no NPC sells a pylon in a biome?

You need at least 2 NPCs in that biome at 'Excited' happiness. If neither NPC sells, check their happiness levels — make sure both are at Excited. Then check the biome — does it qualify as the right biome type? Some pylons (Hallow, Mushroom) require specific block counts. The biome must be officially classified as that type, not just contain a few mushrooms.

Is the Forest pylon worth using?

Yes — the Forest pylon (typically at your main spawn town) is the central hub of your fast-travel network. From it you can fast-travel to any other functional pylon. Make sure your main Forest pylon is working (Excited NPCs) before expanding to other biomes.

What's the most useful pylon to build first?

Snow pylon. It's easy to set up (Mechanic + Cyborg both love Snow) and the Snow biome typically contains valuable progression items (Frostburn fish, Ice Mimics in Hardmode). Forest is the easiest but you're often there anyway. Snow is the highest-priority 'travel target' after Forest.

Can I have multiple pylons in the same biome?

No — only one functional pylon per biome. If you try to place a second pylon in an already-claimed biome, the first one disables. Each biome supports exactly one pylon. The 8-pylon network targets one pylon per the 8 major biomes.
