PoE 2 Class Overview — All 6 Classes & 18 Ascendancies Summarized

Path of Exile 2 guide cover for PoE 2 Class Overview — All 6 Classes & 18 Ascendancies Summarized

How Classes Work in PoE 2

Your class in Path of Exile 2 determines your starting position on the shared passive skill tree, your starting base stats, and which Ascendancy options you can access via the Labyrinth. All six classes share one large passive tree — a Warrior and a Witch can take nodes anywhere on the tree, but their starting positions make different clusters more accessible without significant travel cost.

Unlike many ARPGs, your class does not restrict which skills you can use. A Warrior can equip a bow and use bow skills; a Ranger can equip a Mace. The class system primarily influences your natural stat distribution and which ascendancy path unlocks your most powerful synergistic nodes. Choosing a class is fundamentally about starting position advantage and ascendancy identity.

Ascendancies are unlocked at Labyrinths in Acts 3, 6, and the Endgame Labyrinth — granting 2 points each for a total of 6 Ascendancy Points. Each class has three Ascendancy trees, and you choose one during your first Labyrinth run. Respeccing your entire Ascendancy requires significant currency investment.

Warrior — Best Beginner Class

The Warrior starts in the lower-left of the passive tree, adjacent to the largest cluster of Life nodes in the game. This gives Warrior the highest natural survivability of any class during leveling — you rarely die to stray hits, which makes learning the game's mechanics less punishing. Warrior's starting stats favor Strength, which scales Mace damage, Life, and Armour.

The Warrior's three ascendancies are: Titan (extreme armor stacking, stun-immunity via endurance charges), Warbringer (Warcry enhancement, Berserker-style offense), and Bloodmage (life-based caster hybrid — a unique overlap with Witch playstyle). Titan and Warbringer are both beginner-accessible and extremely effective in the endgame.

Beginners should start as Warrior if they prefer hitting things hard and not dying, want to learn boss mechanics without one-shot pressure, and do not require complex build planning from level 1. The Warrior build naturally develops through the Acts without requiring specific unique items.

Ranger — Fast, Fragile, Rewarding

The Ranger starts in the lower-right of the passive tree, near the highest concentration of Dexterity nodes, Evasion scaling, and attack speed bonuses. The Ranger's identity is speed — fast attack rate, high movement speed from Dexterity scaling, and mobility skills. The trade-off is a naturally lower life pool than Warrior and reliance on Evasion (dodge-based defense) rather than mitigation.

Ranger ascendancies are: Deadeye (bow projectile enhancement — the dominant mapping build ascendancy), Pathfinder (flask-based offense and poison scaling), and Huntress (a close-range Spear specialist introduced in patch 0.3.0). Deadeye is the most popular endgame ascendancy for Ranger due to Lightning Arrow's dominance in map clearing.

Choose Ranger if you enjoy fast-paced, mobile gameplay, prefer ranged attacking to melee, and are comfortable managing Evasion-based defense (which involves understanding dodge vs. block vs. mitigation). Ranger has a moderate learning curve compared to Warrior but produces the fastest map-clear speeds in the endgame.

Witch — Highest Ceiling, Higher Complexity

The Witch starts at the top of the passive tree, adjacent to the Energy Shield cluster and Intelligence-scaling spell damage nodes. The Witch is the primary caster and summoner class, with ascendancies that dramatically amplify spell damage, minion control, or chaos damage. The Witch's natural stat distribution gives access to large mana pools and Energy Shield values not achievable by other classes without significant passive tree pathing.

Witch ascendancies are: Infernalist (fire and minion hybrid — the dominant summoner ascendancy), Stormweaver (spell critical strikes and lightning scaling), and Bloodmage (life-based caster that converts ES to life). Infernalist is the most popular and consistently powerful for league start. Stormweaver produces the highest spell damage ceiling.

Choose Witch if you want the highest damage ceiling in the game, enjoy managing builds with multiple active buffs (auras, minions, curses), and are comfortable with a lower natural life pool that requires ES stacking. Witch has a higher complexity than Warrior but produces some of the game's most powerful endgame builds.

Mercenary and Monk — The Hybrid Classes

Mercenary starts in the lower-center of the tree, between the Warrior and Ranger starting areas. Its stats split Strength and Dexterity, giving access to both attack speed bonuses and the physical damage scaling of Strength. Mercenary's unique role is the Crossbow — a new weapon type in PoE 2 that fires bolts and grenades, combining ranged attack with AoE explosion skills. Mercenary ascendancies: Witchhunter (anti-magic burst damage), Tactician (shield + crossbow tanky fighter), and Gemling Legionnaire (gem-stacking specialist).

Monk starts between the Ranger and Witch areas on the tree, combining Dexterity and Intelligence. Monk is the most mechanically unique class — it uses a Qof energy system where certain attacks build Resonance that fuels special abilities. Monk ascendancies are: Invoker (elemental channeling — converts attacks to elemental damage based on Resonance), Acolyte of Chayula (Chaos Resonance and mind-over-matter mechanics), and Hand of Wisdom and Action (lightning scaling for attacks).

Both Mercenary and Monk have higher mechanical complexity than Warrior or Ranger. They reward understanding of their unique systems (Grenades for Mercenary, Resonance for Monk) but are not recommended for absolute beginners. They are excellent second-character options once you understand the game's base mechanics.

Verdict: For pure power with minimal complexity, Titan and Deadeye lead. For the highest damage ceiling with more complexity, Infernalist and Stormweaver are the top picks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my class after character creation?

No. Your class is permanent for that character. You can create multiple characters of different classes and switch between them freely, but a single character cannot change its class. Choose carefully, though any class can complete the game.

Does class affect which skills I can use?

No. All skills are available to all classes. Your class only affects starting stats, starting position on the passive tree, and which ascendancy options you can access. A Warrior can use bow skills; a Witch can use mace skills.

When do I choose my ascendancy?

You choose your ascendancy at the first Labyrinth, available in Act 3. Before entering the Labyrinth, select which of the three ascendancy paths you want. You cannot change after making the selection without spending significant Orbs of Regret.

Is there a strongest class in PoE 2?

No single class is universally strongest — different ascendancies lead in different content types. Titan Warrior leads in survivability and pinnacle boss tanking. Deadeye Ranger leads in map clear speed. Infernalist Witch leads in league-start efficiency. The 'best' class depends on your preferred playstyle.

Can I respec my ascendancy?

Yes, but it is expensive. You must spend Orbs of Regret to refund all ascendancy points, then complete the Labyrinth again to choose a new ascendancy. This typically costs 20-50 Orbs of Regret plus the time to re-run the Labyrinth.

What is the Sorceress class?

Sorceress is the sixth class, announced for a future content patch. It will be a pure Intelligence caster focused on fire, cold, and lightning spell combinations. It is not available in the current version (0.4.0) of PoE 2.
