PoE 2 Witch Build Guide — Infernalist, Blood Mage & Lich (0.2.0)

Witch Ascendancy Comparison (0.2.0)
| Aspect | Infernalist | Blood Mage | Lich ★ (NEW 0.2.0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Mechanic | Pyromantic Pact: spells cost Infernal Flame; Hellhound minion; Demon Form (life-fueled spell stacks) | Sanguimancy: spells cost Life; enemies drop Life Remnants to refund the spent life (can overcap to ~150% life) | Chaos / curse / energy-shield necromancy (verify exact node list on Maxroll before committing) |
| Best Skills | Fireball, Flame Wall, Volatile Dead (fire-tinged), Skeletal Arsonist minions | Bone Storm, Contagion + Essence Drain, Volatile Dead, Bone Cage | Bone Cage, Skeletal minions, Contagion + Essence Drain, chaos DoT focus |
| Defense | Hybrid Life + ES; Hellhound tank | Life-heavy; relies on Life Remnant refunds + ES buffer | Energy Shield focus; curses to reduce incoming damage |
| Damage Type | Fire (hit + ignite) | Physical / Chaos / Spell hit damage (whichever your gear supports) | Chaos damage over time + hit |
| Difficulty | Medium — manage Hellhound + Demon Form decisions | High — Sanguimancy is unforgiving without leech / Remnant pickup discipline | Medium-High — newer ascendancy; community guides still maturing |
Infernalist Ascendancy — Hellhound, Pyromantic Pact, Demon Form
Infernalist turns the Witch into a fire-themed caster with two ascendancy mechanics that reshape resource use. Pyromantic Pact replaces mana cost with Infernal Flame — your skills generate IF as they cost, and if IF tops out you take damage. The trade is that you stop caring about mana entirely. Demon Form (capstone-tier node) lets the Infernalist transform into a demon: spells cost life and stack Demonflame, which adds spell damage per stack. The longer you stay in Demon Form, the harder you hit — and the closer you come to killing yourself.
The Hellhound is the Infernalist's signature minion: a fiery dog companion that can ignite enemies and tank hits for you. (Note: in patch 0.2.0 the Hellhound's damage mitigation was nerfed — early-EA guides describing tanky-Hellhound numbers are outdated. The current way to add mitigation back is via the Loyalty Support gem at roughly 10% of what it was pre-nerf.)
For map clear, Fireball + Flame Wall is the Infernalist's bread-and-butter: cast Flame Wall through a pack and shoot Fireballs through the wall — projectiles passing through Flame Wall gain bonus fire damage. For minion-flavored builds, Skeletal Arsonist (a fire-themed Witch summon) pairs naturally with the Infernalist's fire-damage scaling.
Blood Mage Ascendancy — Sanguimancy & Life Remnants
Blood Mage's Sanguimancy mechanic converts mana costs into Life costs — every cast spends a chunk of your health pool. The Blood Mage's recovery mechanic is Life Remnants: enemies your spells damage have a chance to drop a Life Remnant on death, which restores life when walked over. Picking up Remnants can even overheal you above 100% (up to ~150% in some builds), which acts as a temporary buffer.
Blood Mage builds therefore live or die by Remnant pickup discipline. You want to position so your spells kill packs you walk through, not packs you kite away from. A movement skill bound to a comfortable key (Dash, Flame Dash, or Blink) is non-negotiable — kiting AWAY from your kills throws away your life recovery.
Skill choice on Blood Mage favors high-damage hits over chained DoTs because the leech / Remnant return scales with damage dealt per cast, not damage per second. Bone Storm (heavy bone spike spell), Volatile Dead (consumes nearby corpses for fire orbs that seek enemies), and the Contagion + Essence Drain chaos combo are all strong picks. Bone Cage is the go-to utility / opening cast for boss fights.
Lich Ascendancy (NEW in 0.2.0)
Lich is the third Witch ascendancy, added in patch 0.2.0 'Dawn of the Hunt'. It leans into chaos damage, curses, and an energy-shield-heavy defense profile rather than the life-coupled mechanics of Blood Mage / Infernalist. The skill toolkit overlaps with the other Witch ascendancies (Bone, Skeletal, Contagion + Essence Drain combo, Volatile Dead) but Lich's passives scale chaos damage over time and curse effectiveness more aggressively than Infernalist or Blood Mage do.
Because Lich is brand-new in 0.2.0, build guides on Maxroll and Fextralife are still maturing — verify specific node names and recommended skill priorities on those sources before committing your ascendancy points. The respec for ascendancy points was added in patch 0.2.0f, which makes experimenting with Lich significantly less painful than it would have been at 0.2.0 launch.
Infernalist Fire Build — Skill Setup (0.2.0)
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Skill | Fireball | Projectile fire spell that ignites on hit; great single-target and clear |
| Primary Support 1 | Concentrated Effect Support | More AoE damage at the cost of AoE size; strong for boss-focused Fireball |
| Primary Support 2 | Added Fire Damage Support | Flat fire damage scaling; pairs naturally with fire skills |
| Combo Skill | Flame Wall | Lay a wall and shoot Fireballs through it for bonus fire damage on projectiles |
| Minion | Skeletal Arsonist | Fire-themed skeletal minion that throws fire bombs; benefits from your fire scaling |
| Utility | Flame Dash | Movement spell that leaves a small fire trail; serves as your travel skill |
| Herald | Herald of Ash | Persistent buff — overkill damage on fire kills creates an ash explosion AoE around the corpse |
Blood Mage Bone Storm Build — Skill Setup (0.2.0)
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Skill | Bone Storm | Heavy physical-bone hit spell with high damage per cast — perfect for Sanguimancy |
| Primary Support 1 | Brutality Support | +35% more physical damage but supported skill deals no chaos / elemental damage — fine on pure physical Bone Storm |
| Primary Support 2 | Concentrated Effect Support | Trades AoE size for damage — Bone Storm becomes a single-target hammer |
| AoE Clear | Volatile Dead | Consumes nearby corpses to create flying fire orbs that seek enemies; screen-clears once a pack drops |
| Combo / Chaos | Contagion + Essence Drain | Standard PoE 2 chaos DoT combo — Contagion spreads Essence Drain across a pack |
| Opening Cast | Bone Cage | Creates bone barriers that damage and disrupt boss positioning |
| Movement | Blink | Instant reposition; critical for grabbing Life Remnants from your kills |
| Offering | Bone Offering | Consumes nearby corpses to grant short-duration block / defense buffs to you and your minions |
Stat Priorities — Witch (0.2.0)
- Intelligence: Primary stat — every 10 INT contributes to maximum Energy Shield and spell scaling.
- Spell Damage / Elemental Damage: Prefix mods on wands, staves, and sceptres; the biggest DPS lever for any caster.
- Critical Strike Chance + Critical Strike Multiplier: Stacked via passive tree and jewelry; doubles effective DPS on crit builds.
- Life (Blood Mage): Life IS the resource you spend on Sanguimancy; prioritize life rolls on rings, amulet, and body armour.
- Energy Shield (Infernalist / Lich): Primary defensive layer; aim for 3,500+ ES before red maps, 5,000+ before pinnacle attempts.
- Cast Speed: Passive tree and jewelry mods; more casts per second is a direct DPS multiplier.
- Chaos Resistance: At least 40% before T11+ maps, 75% before pinnacle bosses (Xesht hits chaos hard).
Frequently asked questions
Is Infernalist, Blood Mage, or Lich better for a new Witch player?
Infernalist is the most beginner-friendly. Fireball + Flame Wall + Herald of Ash is intuitive and forgiving, and the Hellhound contributes damage without much management. Blood Mage demands Remnant-pickup discipline and can kill you with your own spells if you misposition. Lich is new in 0.2.0 and community guides are still maturing — wait for established guides before committing as a first character.
What weapon should a Witch use?
Wand + Focus is the standard offensive setup — wands roll spell damage, cast speed, and elemental modifiers, and Focus off-hand provides an energy shield bonus. A staff is the alternative for two-handed scaling. Avoid bows / crossbows (those are Ranger / Mercenary territory).
Can the Witch use Boneshatter or Earthquake like Warrior?
Technically yes — PoE 2 skill gems are not strictly class-locked, but Boneshatter, Earthquake, and other slam skills require Strength and a mace. A pure Witch usually does not have the STR to wield maces meaningfully. Stick to wand / staff / sceptre spells unless you are deliberately building a hybrid.
How do I keep the Hellhound alive as Infernalist?
The Hellhound scales with the Witch's minion life modifiers and is buffed by Loyalty Support (added back some mitigation that was nerfed at 0.2.0 launch). Invest in 'Minion Life' nodes near the Witch start, equip gear with '+X% to Minion Life' on helmet, and slot Loyalty Support into the Hellhound's skill slot. Even with this investment, expect the Hellhound to die in juiced T15 maps — it will resummon after a short delay.
Does the Witch need chaos resistance?
Yes — heavily. Chaos damage bypasses Energy Shield in PoE 2 (unless you take the Chaos Inoculation keystone, which sets your max life to 1 and grants chaos immunity). For non-CI Witches, aim for 40%+ chaos res in yellow maps and 75% before pinnacle bosses — Xesht especially hits chaos hard.
