Plains Biome Farming in Valheim — Barley, Flax & Fuling Camps

Why Barley and Flax Matter
Barley and Flax are the two most important Plains-exclusive materials for late-game progression. Barley is processed into Barley Flour, which is a key ingredient for high-tier foods like Blood Pudding and Bread — the best HP and Stamina foods available before Mistlands. Flax is spun into Linen Thread, the primary crafting material for Padded Armor (the strongest available armor tier for Plains content and Yagluth).
Unlike earlier biome resources that can be found in the wild, Barley and Flax are only obtained from Fuling Village farmland — cultivated areas tended by Fuling enemies in the Plains. You cannot find them growing wild in the open Plains grasslands. This means raiding Fuling Villages is mandatory for progression into the late game.
Once obtained, Barley and Flax can be replanted at your own base using a Cultivator, creating a sustainable farming operation that eliminates the need to repeatedly raid Fuling camps after the initial seed collection. Setting up your own Barley and Flax farm is one of the most impactful base improvements at the Plains tier.
Barley and Flax Uses
| Resource | Processing Step | Output | Used In | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barley | Barley (raw) | Plant with Cultivator; harvest 2–3x per seed | Barley stock | Windmill processing required |
| Barley Flour | Barley → Windmill | 1 Barley = 1 Barley Flour | Barley Flour | Bread, Blood Pudding, Serpent Stew (late-game food) |
| Flax | Flax (raw) | Plant with Cultivator; harvest 2x per seed | Flax stock | Spinning Wheel processing required |
| Linen Thread | Flax → Spinning Wheel | 1 Flax = 1 Linen Thread | Linen Thread | Padded Armor (all pieces), various high-tier items |
Raiding Fuling Villages Safely
Fuling villages are the most dangerous locations in the Plains for mid-game players. They contain multiple Fulings (standard), Fuling Berserkers (very high HP and damage), and Fuling Shamans (ranged poison attacks and shields). A careless approach results in being overwhelmed quickly. Careful strategy makes village raids manageable.
The safest approach is scouting from elevation or at the edge of Fuling attack radius. Use a Draugr Fang bow with Silver or Needle Arrows to pick off Fulings at range before closing in. Berserkers should be handled last or kited individually — they hit extremely hard but are slower to initiate combat. Avoid letting multiple Berserkers engage simultaneously.
Time your raids during daytime — Fuling Berserkers are more aggressive at night. Bring maximum food (all three slots), Medium Healing Mead, and a Black Metal or Silver weapon at minimum. Iron Armor is insufficient for Plains combat — you need Padded Armor or be very aggressive with a hit-and-run bow strategy.
Farm Route: Fuling Village Barley and Flax Raid
- Location
- Fuling Village, Plains biome
- Start point
- Approach from downwind direction at the village perimeter; assess enemy count before engaging
- Yield
- 20–50 Barley, 10–30 Flax per village (varies by village size)
Steps
- Locate a Fuling village on the Plains. They appear as clusters of wooden structures with Fuling enemies patrolling around cultivated fields.
- Snipe outer Fulings with a Draugr Fang bow from maximum range. Eliminate Shamans first — their Shield buff protects other Fulings from damage.
- Clear Fuling Berserkers one at a time: kite them away from the group, then engage with Black Metal sword or Frostner. Never fight two Berserkers simultaneously.
- Once the village exterior is clear, search the farmland areas (plots of dark tilled earth) for growing Barley and Flax plants.
- Harvest all visible Barley and Flax plants by pressing E. Each harvested plant yields the resource plus a seed for replanting.
- Check storage containers inside village structures — Fulings stockpile additional Barley and Flax inside chests.
- Collect Fuling Totems from Berserkers and Shamans for Yagluth summoning (need 5 total).
- Portal home with your harvest (Barley and Flax can go through portals).
Tips
- Always harvest every plant in a village — seeds drop alongside the resource, letting you replant at your base.
- Deathsquitos patrol open Plains areas between villages — equip a high-DPS weapon and kill them in one hit to avoid their one-shot potential.
- Lox are non-hostile unless provoked — avoid engaging them during village raids to minimize combat complexity.
- Build a temporary shelter with a portal tag near active raiding zones for quick extractions with a full inventory.
Setting Up Your Own Barley and Flax Farm
After the initial village raid, replant harvested seeds at your own base using a Cultivator (Bronze + Core Wood). Unlike wild Carrots or Turnips, Barley and Flax can ONLY be planted in biomes you own or at your base. Crucially, they can be planted anywhere with a Cultivator — you do not need to be in the Plains to grow them, though some players prefer to build a Plains outpost farm for thematic consistency.
Each planted Barley yields 2–3 harvested Barley per seed. Each planted Flax yields 2 harvested Flax per seed. This means even a small initial collection of 20 Barley seeds and 10 Flax seeds can be grown into a self-sustaining farm within a few harvest cycles. Reserve some of each harvest as replanting seeds.
The Windmill (converts Barley to Barley Flour) and Spinning Wheel (converts Flax to Linen Thread) must be placed near your farm. Both require the Artisan Table (built from Dragon Tears from Moder). The Windmill specifically requires exposed wind — build it on a hilltop or elevated open area rather than inside your base walls.
Windmill and Spinning Wheel — Setup and Yield
- Windmill crafting cost: 20 Stone, 30 Wood, 4 Iron. Must be built outdoors with wind access — check the Windmill UI panel to see current wind efficiency. Rotate its position on the hilltop to maximize wind yield.
- Windmill conversion: 1 Barley → 1 Barley Flour. Load Barley into the Windmill via its storage UI. The conversion is automatic and continuous based on available wind.
- Spinning Wheel crafting cost: 20 Fine Wood, 10 Iron, 5 Leather Scraps. Can be built indoors. Conversion: 1 Flax → 1 Linen Thread. Automatic conversion when Flax is loaded.
- Padded Armor crafting: Iron Scale Mail (10 Iron + 8 Linen Thread), Padded Helm (10 Iron + 3 Linen Thread), Padded Greaves (10 Iron + 8 Linen Thread). Requires Forge with Forge Cooler upgrade.
- Food using Barley Flour: Bread (10 Barley Flour + 5 Cloudberries — Cauldron), Blood Pudding (2 Bloodbag + 4 Royals Jelly + 4 Barley Flour), Lox Meat Pie (4 Barley Flour + 2 Cloudberries + 2 Cooked Lox Meat).
- Farm scale guidance: 10 Windmill loads of Barley per week sustains regular Blood Pudding and Bread production for active play. Grow at minimum 30–40 Barley plants for comfortable throughput.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find Barley and Flax in Valheim?
Barley and Flax grow only in cultivated farmland inside Fuling Villages in the Plains biome. They cannot be found growing wild in the open Plains. Raid Fuling villages to collect both resources and their seeds, then plant them at your own base using a Cultivator.
Can I plant Barley and Flax at my base?
Yes. Barley and Flax can be planted anywhere using a Cultivator after obtaining seeds from Fuling villages. Unlike some biome-specific crops in earlier updates, they can be grown outside the Plains biome. Simply till the soil with the Cultivator and plant the seeds.
What does Barley Flour make in Valheim?
Barley Flour is a key ingredient in high-tier Plains foods: Bread (10 Barley Flour + 5 Cloudberries), Blood Pudding (the highest HP food available), and Lox Meat Pie. These are the best foods for the Plains biome and Yagluth fight, providing the highest HP and Stamina values in the game before Mistlands.
How do I make Linen Thread in Valheim?
Linen Thread is made by processing Flax in a Spinning Wheel — 1 Flax produces 1 Linen Thread. The Spinning Wheel requires the Artisan Table (built from Moder's Dragon Tear) to unlock. Load Flax into the Spinning Wheel and it converts automatically.
How do I safely raid Fuling villages?
Use a ranged weapon (Draugr Fang bow with Silver or Needle arrows) to pick off Fulings at range before engaging. Kill Shamans first to remove their protection shield. Handle Berserkers one at a time with a Black Metal weapon. Bring maximum food and healing meads. Avoid fighting in the open Plains at night when enemies are more aggressive.
Do I need the Windmill to use Barley?
Yes — raw Barley cannot be used directly in recipes. It must be processed into Barley Flour in the Windmill first. The Windmill is crafted at the Artisan Table (requires Moder's Dragon Tears) using 20 Stone, 30 Wood, and 4 Iron. Build it outdoors in a windy location for maximum conversion efficiency.
