How to Craft Molten Armor in Terraria — Hellstone Farming & Smelting

What Is Hellstone and Why Does It Matter?
Hellstone is an ore found exclusively in the Underworld (Hell) — the lowest biome in Terraria, located at the bottom of the map. It is the rarest and most valuable pre-Hardmode mining material, used to craft the best pre-Hardmode armor (Molten), the best pre-Hardmode pickaxe (Molten Pickaxe), and several pre-Hardmode weapons including the Molten Fury (bow), Phoenix Blaster (gun), and Fiery Greatsword component.
The unique property of Hellstone is that mining it releases lava from the adjacent block. This makes farming Hellstone significantly more dangerous than other ores — without lava immunity or careful positioning, you will take constant fire damage from self-generated lava flows. The Obsidian Skin Potion is the standard solution.
Molten Armor (45 Hellstone Bars) is the strongest melee armor before Hardmode. It provides 25 defense, +17% melee damage, and a set bonus that creates a ring of fire around you during sword swings. The Molten Pickaxe (crafted separately) is required to mine Cobalt/Palladium ore in early Hardmode. Completing the full Molten set and Molten Pickaxe before fighting Wall of Flesh is the standard late pre-Hardmode milestone.
Molten Armor — Full Crafting Materials
| Armor Piece | Defense | Materials (Hellstone Bars) | Total Hellstone Ore Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Molten Helmet | 8 defense | 10 Hellstone Bars | 20 Hellstone + 10 Obsidian |
| Molten Breastplate | 11 defense | 20 Hellstone Bars | 40 Hellstone + 20 Obsidian |
| Molten Greaves | 8 defense | 15 Hellstone Bars | 30 Hellstone + 15 Obsidian |
| Full Set Total | 27 defense (25 base + 2 from set bonus placement) | 45 Hellstone Bars total | 90 Hellstone + 45 Obsidian → 45 Bars |
Getting Obsidian — The Second Ingredient
Each Hellstone Bar requires 2 Hellstone Ore + 1 Obsidian. Obsidian is created when water meets lava — it forms solid Obsidian blocks that can be mined with a regular Pickaxe (Gold/Platinum Pickaxe or better). The easiest way to get Obsidian is to guide a water source into contact with lava in the Underworld.
A practical method: carry a bucket of water from any surface lake and pour it onto lava flows in the Underworld. Where water meets lava, Obsidian forms. Mine it with your pickaxe. You need 45 Obsidian for the full Molten Armor set — approximately 5–10 minutes of Obsidian farming with a water bucket.
Obsidian also forms naturally where underground water pockets meet lava in the Underworld. Keep an eye out for Obsidian deposits as you explore — they are visually distinct (dark black blocks surrounded by lava) and common near the Underworld's roof.
Underworld Farming Route — Step by Step
- Reach the Underworld by digging a vertical shaft (Hellevator) from the surface straight down until you hit the Underworld biome. The Underworld has a distinctive red/orange rock background and lava everywhere.
- Brew Obsidian Skin Potions before farming: Bottled Water + Fireblossom (grows in Ash in the Underworld on stone) + Waterleaf + Obsidian. Obsidian Skin makes you immune to lava damage for 4 minutes. You can also use Lava Charm (found in Underground Cavern chests) for free lava immunity.
- Look for the Hellforge — a special furnace object found in the Underworld. You need to place it in your base or near a crafting area. Hellstone Bars cannot be smelted in regular Furnaces — only in a Hellforge or a Titanium/Adamantite Forge (Hardmode). Pick up the Hellforge by mining it with a Pickaxe.
- Mine Hellstone nodes — they look like dark red-orange ore embedded in Hellstone background rock or ash stone. Each mine hit releases lava from the block directly below. Mine from above or the side to avoid standing in the lava flow.
- Collect Obsidian by pouring water on lava pools — bring 2–3 Water Buckets for this. Each water pour creates a cluster of Obsidian blocks.
- Watch for the main enemies: Fire Imps (throw fireballs — prioritize killing), Bone Serpents (large worm boss-style enemy), and Hell Bats. These enemies all deal significant damage; bring healing potions.
- Smelt collected Hellstone + Obsidian at the Hellforge: place it in your crafting area at home, then open crafting near it to access Hellstone Bar recipes.
Molten Armor Set Stats & Bonus
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Defense | 27 defense |
| Melee Damage Bonus | +17% |
| Set Bonus | Emits a ring of fire during melee swings (visual + damage aura) |
| Required Crafting Station | Hellforge (found in Underworld) |
| Crafting Materials Total | 45 Hellstone Bars (90 Hellstone + 45 Obsidian) |
| Best For | Melee class; also viable for any pre-Hardmode class due to high base defense |
Why Molten Armor vs Earlier Armors?
| Armor | Defense | Key Bonus | When to Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold/Platinum Armor | 16 defense | No class bonus | Replace immediately with Shadow/Crimson |
| Shadow Armor | 19 defense | +25% melee speed; +15% movement speed | Upgrade to Molten when possible |
| Crimson Armor | 19 defense | +6 HP regen | Upgrade to Molten when possible |
| Molten Armor | 27 defense | +17% melee damage + fire ring | Best pre-Hardmode option — keep until Cobalt/Palladium armor in Hardmode |
Verdict: Molten Armor is a decisive upgrade over Shadow or Crimson Armor — 8 more defense plus a significant damage boost. The Molten Pickaxe is equally important (required to mine Hardmode Tier 1 ores). Craft both before attempting Wall of Flesh.
Frequently asked questions
Can I smelt Hellstone Bars without a Hellforge?
No. Hellstone Bars require either a Hellforge (found in the Underworld — pick one up with a pickaxe) or the Titanium/Adamantite Forge (Hardmode crafting station). Regular Furnaces cannot smelt Hellstone. You must physically carry a Hellforge back to your base or smelt on-location in the Underworld.
Does Molten Armor help with any class besides melee?
Molten Armor's bonuses are melee-specific (+17% melee damage), but its 27 defense is the highest of any pre-Hardmode armor regardless of class. Mages, rangers, and summoners in pre-Hardmode who want maximum survivability can wear Molten for the defense while accepting the lack of class-specific bonuses. Class-specific alternatives (Jungle Armor for mages, Necro Armor for rangers) sacrifice defense for class bonuses.
How do I avoid dying to lava while farming Hellstone?
Three options: Obsidian Skin Potion (full lava immunity for 4 minutes), Lava Charm accessory (7 seconds of lava immunity, found in Underworld chests), or careful mining from above/side to avoid the lava release hitting you directly. The Obsidian Skin Potion is the most reliable — brew them in quantity before your mining session.
Where do I find the Hellforge?
Hellforges spawn as furniture objects inside Ruined Houses in the Underworld. Ruined Houses are small pre-built structures scattered throughout the Underworld biome — look for rectangular stone brick buildings with ash block floors. Each Ruined House contains a Hellforge and a Shadow Chest (opened with the Shadow Key from the Dungeon).
Is Molten Armor the right armor for fighting Wall of Flesh?
Yes, for melee. For ranged, Necro Armor's 15% ranged damage bonus can slightly outperform Molten Armor's melee bonus when using guns/bows for the Wall of Flesh fight. For the Wall of Flesh specifically, high-DPS ranged weapons (Minishark, Demon Bow with Hellfire Arrows) on a long horizontal platform are generally the easiest strategy regardless of armor.
