How the Fishing Minigame Works
When a fish bites and you click to start reeling, a vertical minigame panel appears. The green bar on the right is your bobber bar — its position is controlled by clicking or holding the mouse button (tap on mobile) to make it rise, or releasing to let it fall. The fish icon moves up and down erratically according to the fish's behavior pattern. Keep the green bar overlapping the fish icon to fill the progress meter at the top. If the fish escapes your bar completely, the meter depletes. Fill it entirely to catch the fish.
Each fish has a unique difficulty rating and movement pattern. Easy fish (like Carp or Smallmouth Bass) move slowly and predictably. Hard fish (like the Legendary fish or Catfish) dart around rapidly and require precise timing. The size of your green bar grows as your Fishing level increases, and the Cork Bobber tackle can further increase it. At Fishing Level 1, the bar is small and precise timing is essential; by Level 10, the bar is large enough to catch most fish comfortably.
Perfect catches occur when you never let the fish touch the edges of the panel (the fish stays fully inside your bar the entire catch). A perfect catch upgrades the fish's quality by one level — a regular-quality fish caught perfectly becomes silver quality. This is especially valuable for large, high-value fish where quality dramatically affects sell price.
Fishing Rod Comparison and Upgrades
You start with the Bamboo Pole (basic rod, no bait, no tackle). Willy gives you the Bamboo Pole on Day 2 Spring. The Training Rod (25g from Willy) makes catching much easier by removing the most difficult fish patterns, but severely limits which fish can be caught — it's suitable only for beginners learning the minigame. Switch away from it as soon as you feel confident.
The Fiberglass Rod (1,800g from Willy, requires Fishing Level 2) adds a Bait slot. Bait dramatically increases the rate at which fish bite, cutting waiting time between catches significantly. Wild Bait (craftable from 10 Fiber, 5 Bug Meat, 5 Slime) adds a chance to catch two fish at once. The Fiberglass Rod is the key upgrade that makes fishing genuinely productive for income.
The Iridium Rod (7,500g from Willy, requires Fishing Level 6) adds both a Bait slot and a Tackle slot. Tackle provides persistent bonuses that last until the tackle breaks (approximately 20 uses). The best all-purpose tackle choices are Trap Bobber (fish escape your bar 33% slower, great for hard fish) and Cork Bobber (increases bar size). For maximum treasure chest collection, use the Treasure Hunter tackle.
Fishing Rods Compared
| Rod | Cost | Bait Slot | Tackle Slot | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bamboo Pole | Free (Willy, Day 2) | No | No | Absolute beginners only — discard quickly |
| Training Rod | 25g (Willy) | No | No | Learning the minigame; severely limits fish types |
| Fiberglass Rod | 1,800g (Willy, Fishing Lv2) | Yes | No | Main early-to-mid game rod; bait doubles fishing speed |
| Iridium Rod | 7,500g (Willy, Fishing Lv6) | Yes | Yes | End-game standard; tackle allows major customization |
Verdict: Get the Fiberglass Rod as soon as possible (Fishing Level 2). Upgrade to Iridium Rod at Level 6 to unlock tackle. The Training Rod is only for learning the UI — avoid it for actual fishing.
Best Fish by Season and Location
- Spring — Beach/Ocean: Sardine (all day), Anchovy, Eel (rainy, night), Flounder, Albacore (morning/evening); Mountain Lake: Catfish (rainy), Smallmouth Bass; River: Shad, Sunfish.
- Summer — Beach: Pufferfish (sunny, day), Tuna, Tilapia, Super Cucumber (rare, deep ocean night); Mountain Lake: Sturgeon (all day — needed for Caviar and bundle); River: Woodskip (Secret Woods pond), Salmon.
- Fall — Beach: Albacore, Tiger Trout (rare, river); River: Salmon, Walleye (rainy), Catfish; Mountain Lake: Largemouth Bass, Pike.
- Winter — Beach/Ocean: Squid (night), Midnight Carp (all water types at night), Spook Fish (Night Market submarine only); Winter-exclusive fishing uses Crab Pots productively when outdoor fish are limited.
- Legendary Fish (once per save file): Legend (Mountain Lake, Spring, rainy, Fishing Lv10), Mutant Carp (Sewers year-round), Crimsonfish (East Beach, Summer), Angler (Cindersnap Forest bridge, Fall), Glacierfish (Arrowhead Island, Winter).
Fishing for Income — Is It Worth It?
Fishing is an excellent income source in Year 1, especially before you have established crop income. Large Largemouth Bass (75g–225g), Tuna (100g–300g), and Pufferfish (200g–600g at high quality) provide strong early gold. Legendary Fish sell for 1,500g–5,000g, though you can only catch each once per save.
Fishing also provides XP toward Fishing Level, which is useful for unlocking recipes and the Fisher/Angler professions. Fisher (Level 5) adds 25% to fish sell prices; Angler (Level 10, requires Fisher) adds 50% to fish sell prices. With these professions and Iridium Rod, selling top-tier fish becomes a meaningful income stream even late game.
For Community Center completion, fishing is mandatory — all six Fish Tank bundles require specific seasonal fish. Prioritize fishing during Summer to catch Sturgeon (Mountain Lake) for Roe processing into Caviar. Sturgeon Roe aged in Preserves Jars becomes Caviar (670g, or 940g with Artisan), one of the most profitable artisan goods outside of wine.
Common Fishing Mistakes
- Using the Training Rod for too long — it prevents catching most fish needed for bundles and high-value catches.
- Not buying Bait once you have the Fiberglass Rod — Bait is cheap (5 Bug Meat = 5 Bait) and massively improves efficiency.
- Casting into shallow water — longer casts into deep water increase the chance of rare, high-quality fish appearing.
- Missing the Spook Fish window at the Night Market — it's only three days per year and required for the Specialty Fish bundle.
- Not fishing during rainy days — Catfish, Eel, and Walleye only appear in rain and are required for several bundles.
- Letting fishing XP stagnate — Fishing Level determines bar size and fish quality; actively fishing even outside peak seasons helps level up faster.
Frequently asked questions
How does fishing XP work in Stardew Valley?
Each fish caught grants Fishing XP based on the fish's difficulty and quality. Harder fish and better catches grant more XP. Perfect catches grant bonus XP. Fishing Level increases your bobber bar size and catch probability on rare fish.
What is the best tackle for the Iridium Rod?
Trap Bobber is the best all-purpose tackle — fish escape 33% slower, giving you more margin for error. Cork Bobber is great for beginners because it increases bar size. Use Treasure Hunter tackle if you want to maximize chest finds during the minigame.
Can you catch Legendary Fish more than once?
No — each of the five Legendary Fish (Legend, Mutant Carp, Crimsonfish, Angler, Glacierfish) can only be caught once per save file. In multiplayer, each player can catch them once. Keep them for personal collection or sell for maximum gold since you can't get them again.
Where is the best fishing spot for early income?
The Beach (south of town) provides the most variety for income fishing. During Summer, the Mountain Lake is best for Sturgeon (needed for Caviar). The River through Pelican Town has good Spring fish including Catfish on rainy days.
What profession should I choose at Fishing Level 5?
Fisher (+25% fish sell price) is recommended for income-focused fishing. The alternative, Trapper (reduces Crab Pot resource cost), is useful if you plan a large Crab Pot operation. At Level 10, Angler (+50% fish price, requires Fisher) is the top choice for selling fish.
