How to Get Your First Ancient Fruit Seed

The Ancient Seed artifact is the starting point. This is a gray, withered seed found by digging Artifact Spots (the worm-like patches that appear on farm soil and forest paths). The drop rate is low — roughly 0.5% from farm Artifact Spots and slightly higher from forest areas. Fishing Treasure Chests also very occasionally contain an Ancient Seed artifact or directly a plantable seed.

When you find the Ancient Seed artifact, take it to Gunther at the Museum and donate it. In return, Gunther gives you one plantable Ancient Seed as a reward. This is your starting seed. Plant it in Spring, Summer, or Fall — it will take 28 days to grow and won't survive Winter outdoors, so planting in Spring gives the most regrow cycles before season end.

The Traveling Merchant (appears Fridays and Sundays just south of the Farm) occasionally sells Ancient Seeds (the plantable version, not the artifact) at 100–600g. At any price in that range, it's worth buying. Keep checking every Friday and Sunday through Year 1 — even one extra starting seed can double your Year 1 harvest.

Scaling Up With the Seed Maker

Once you have your first Ancient Fruit harvest, the Seed Maker is your primary expansion tool. Crafted from 25 Wood, 10 Coal, and 1 Gold Bar (requires Farming Level 9), it converts any crop into seeds. Put an Ancient Fruit in and you get 1–3 Ancient Seeds back (average ~1.98 seeds per fruit, with a 2% chance to get a rare different seed instead).

The expansion math is powerful: one Ancient Fruit plant yields one fruit every 7 days. After 28 days (one Season), you've produced 0 fruit if you planted in Spring Year 1 (first harvest = Fall Day 14 if planted Spring Day 1). Actually: planted Spring 1 → first harvest Fall 4 (day 28 of Spring doesn't exist, Spring ends at 28, so harvest Day 28 of Spring would be the last day... the actual timing depends on planting date within season).

More practically: plant in Spring, harvest before Fall ends, put every fruit through Seed Maker over Winter, then replant your expanded stock in Spring Year 2. With 2 starting seeds multiplied by Seed Maker across 3 seasons' worth of output (~8–12 fruit by Fall Year 1), you can enter Year 2 with 16–24 seeds — enough to fill a significant patch. By Year 3, a greenhouse full of 116 Ancient Fruit plants is achievable.

Ancient Fruit Greenhouse Expansion Plan

Start point
Spring Year 2, after unlocking Greenhouse
Yield
116 Ancient Fruits per 7 days (full greenhouse, mature plants)

Steps

  1. Year 1: Plant first Ancient Fruit outdoors in Spring. Harvest in Fall. Use Seed Maker on every fruit harvested.
  2. Year 1 Winter: Save all Ancient Seeds in a chest. Do NOT plant outdoors in Winter — crops die.
  3. Year 2 Spring Day 1: Plant all Ancient Seeds in the Greenhouse if unlocked, or outdoors in Spring.
  4. Route each harvest back through Seed Maker until all 116 greenhouse tiles are filled.
  5. Once all tiles are planted and mature, each 7-day cycle yields 116 Ancient Fruits.
  6. Place all fruit into Kegs (aim for 116+ kegs) — each converts to 2,310g Artisan wine.
  7. Rotate Artisan Ancient Fruit Wine into Cellar Casks for iridium quality (4,620g Artisan).
  8. Maintain the cycle: harvest → Seed Maker (keep seed stock) → remaining fruit → Kegs.

Tips

  • Install a Junimo Hut in the Greenhouse to auto-harvest — Ancient Fruit plants need no replanting.
  • Use Iridium Sprinklers (covers 24 tiles) to eliminate manual watering — 5 sprinklers cover the full greenhouse.
  • Don't sell Ancient Fruit raw until you have enough seeds to fill every greenhouse tile.
  • Time keg builds to match your expanding harvest volume — build 10 new Kegs per week from Oak Resin production.

Ancient Fruit vs Starfruit — Greenhouse Comparison

MetricAncient FruitStarfruitWinner
Days to harvest28 (first), 7 (regrow)13 (no regrow)Starfruit for initial setup speed
Wine value (base)2,310g2,250gAncient Fruit (very slightly)
Wine value (Artisan)3,234g3,150gAncient Fruit (very slightly)

Seeds per cycleSelf-sustaining via Seed MakerNeed to repurchase or Seed MakerAncient Fruit (no ongoing seed cost)
Seed availabilityVery rare initially400g/seed from Pierre (Summer)Starfruit (much easier to source)
Total gold per tile per year (greenhouse, Artisan wine)~180,000g+ (regrow)~90,000g (no regrow)Ancient Fruit

Verdict: Ancient Fruit wins decisively in a full greenhouse setup thanks to its regrow mechanic — 4 harvests per season vs 2 for Starfruit, with similar per-bottle wine value. Starfruit is better early when Ancient Fruit seeds are scarce. A mature greenhouse should prioritize Ancient Fruit with a small Starfruit section for seed cycling.

Maximizing Ancient Fruit Wine Profit

The wine production chain is: Ancient Fruit → Keg (6.25 days) → Ancient Fruit Wine (2,310g Artisan) → optional Cask aging → Iridium Artisan Ancient Fruit Wine (4,620g). The Cellar with 189 Casks processes wine to iridium quality in ~56 in-game days. Iridium ancient fruit wine is one of the highest-value items in the game.

At full scale with 116 greenhouse tiles, 116 Kegs, and 189 Casks: each 7-day cycle produces 116 wines at 2,310g Artisan = 267,960g per cycle. Over a 28-day season, that's about four cycles or roughly 1,071,840g per season — over 4 million gold per in-game year. This is the theoretical maximum for a single-crop farm strategy.

Getting to this scale takes 3–4 years of dedicated play. The bottleneck is always Oak Resin (for Kegs) and time to build infrastructure. A more realistic mid-game target is 50 Kegs running Ancient Fruit wine, generating around 115,000g per 7-day cycle with Artisan.

Common Ancient Fruit Mistakes

  • Letting Ancient Fruit plants die in Winter by leaving them outdoors — always move plants to the greenhouse or harvest and process before Winter.
  • Selling Ancient Fruit raw instead of using Seed Maker during the expansion phase — every fruit should become seeds until greenhouse is full.
  • Not building the Seed Maker early enough — it requires Farming Level 9 and Gold Bar. Start tapping Gold Ore in Summer Year 1.
  • Routing Ancient Fruit through Preserves Jars instead of Kegs — at 550g base value, Kegs (1,650g → 2,310g Artisan) far outperform Jars (1,150g → 1,610g Artisan).
  • Planting Ancient Fruit in outdoor fields in Year 1 Fall without realizing the crop will die when Winter hits Day 1 — any unharvested outdoor crops die at season transition.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the Ancient Seed artifact?

The Ancient Seed artifact has approximately a 0.5% chance to drop from Artifact Spots on the farm and slightly higher rates in forest paths. It can also come from Fishing Treasure Chests at roughly 0.3% chance. It's rare but findable within Year 1 with regular digging of worm spots.

Can Ancient Fruit regrow in the greenhouse?

Yes — Ancient Fruit regrows every 7 days in the greenhouse indefinitely, regardless of season. This is the primary reason the greenhouse is so valuable for Ancient Fruit farming.

How many Ancient Fruit plants can fit in the Greenhouse?

The greenhouse has 116 farmable tiles. You can plant 116 Ancient Fruit plants for full coverage. With Iridium Sprinklers placed optimally, no manual watering is needed.

Should I donate Ancient Seed to the Museum or plant it?

Always donate the first Ancient Seed artifact you find. Gunther rewards you with a plantable Ancient Seed upon donation — so you lose nothing and gain a bonus. After the first donation, put all subsequent Ancient Seeds through the Seed Maker or plant directly.

Is Ancient Fruit Wine or Starfruit Wine more valuable?

They're very close — Ancient Fruit Wine is 2,310g Artisan vs Starfruit Wine at 3,150g Artisan per bottle. But Ancient Fruit regrows every 7 days without replanting, effectively giving 4× more harvests per season per tile in the greenhouse. Total annual output strongly favors Ancient Fruit.
