Bombs in Stardew Valley — Crafting Recipes, Uses & Mining Efficiency

Bomb Types — Quick Reference
| Bomb Type | Recipe | Unlock Level | Blast Radius | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cherry Bomb | 4 Copper Ore + 1 Coal | Mining Level 1 | Small (3×3) | Early Mines — basic rock clearing |
| Bomb | 1 Iron Ore + 4 Coal | Mining Level 6 | Medium (7×7 approx.) | General mining, killing Mummies |
| Mega Bomb | 1 Gold Ore + 1 Iron Ore + 1 Coal | Mining Level 8 | Very Large (10+ tile radius) | Skull Cavern deep runs — primary choice |
| Explosive Ammo | 2 Iron Ore + 1 Coal (used in Slingshot) | Combat Level 8 | Small, targeted | Niche — less efficient than Mega Bombs |
Cherry Bombs — Early Game Starter
Cherry Bombs are unlocked at Mining Level 1 and are your first explosive option. They require 4 Copper Ore and 1 Coal to craft, making them cheap and easy to produce in large quantities during early Mines exploration. The small blast radius clears a modest area — roughly a 3×3 square — which is enough to destroy a cluster of small rocks and potentially reveal a ladder.
Cherry Bombs are useful in the first 40 floors of the Mines where Copper is abundant. Beyond that, the small radius makes them inefficient compared to regular Bombs. Use up your Copper Ore surplus on Cherry Bombs in early Spring Year 1 when you're pushing through the first Mines sections — they save pickaxe swings and speed up floor clearing.
Cherry Bombs should not be used in Skull Cavern — the radius is simply too small to justify the slot and craft cost. Once you're regularly visiting floors 60+ of the Mines, transition exclusively to regular Bombs and Mega Bombs for meaningful area clearing.
Mega Bombs — The Deep Run Essential
Mega Bombs are the crown jewel of Stardew Valley's explosive toolkit. Unlocked at Mining Level 8, they require 1 Gold Ore, 1 Iron Ore, and 1 Coal each — an extremely efficient cost-to-effect ratio. The blast radius is enormous: a single Mega Bomb can destroy a 10+ tile radius of rock, revealing multiple ladder positions simultaneously and killing most non-boss enemies in the area.
For Skull Cavern deep runs (targeting Floor 100+), Mega Bombs are non-negotiable. The strategy is simple: on each floor, scan for the largest rock cluster, throw a Mega Bomb into it, and immediately search the cleared area for a shaft or ladder. The Mega Bomb's radius is large enough that you often reveal a hole (shaft) with a single blast, letting you skip 3–15 floors instantly. Bring 30+ Mega Bombs for a serious run.
Mega Bombs also kill Mummies efficiently — Mummies require explosive or fire damage to prevent regeneration, and a single Mega Bomb destroys the corpse entirely. Without a bomb, Mummies regenerate unless you use Oil of Garlic or Robin's Slingshot with Explosive Ammo. Always have regular Bombs or Mega Bombs when encountering Mummy floors in Skull Cavern.
Pre-Skull Cavern Bomb Stockpiling Strategy
- Location
- Your Farm / Mines
- Start point
- Any season before a planned Skull Cavern deep run
- Yield
- 20–40 Mega Bombs per mining session
Steps
- Mine Gold Ore on Mines floors 80–120 or buy Gold Ore from Clint for 400g per stack of 10.
- Smelt Gold Ore in Furnace (5 ore + 1 coal = 1 Gold Bar). Keep raw ore for Mega Bomb crafting.
- Mine Iron Ore on Mines floors 40–79 — Iron is abundant in these floors.
- Stock Coal from monster drops (bats, stone golems), from Mines rocks, or buy from Clint (150g per coal).
- Craft Mega Bombs: 1 Gold Ore + 1 Iron Ore + 1 Coal each. Make 30–40 before each major Skull Cavern run.
- Also craft 20 regular Bombs (1 Iron Ore + 4 Coal) as backup for specific situations.
- Purchase additional bombs from the Dwarf merchant (in Mines past Floor 40, after giving all four Dwarvish Scrolls to Gunther) — sells Cherry Bombs and Bombs at gold prices.
Tips
- Buy from the Dwarf when running low during a run — faster than returning to craft.
- Stone Staircases (99 Stone each) complement bombs when floors resist giving ladders naturally.
- Don't bomb everything — cherry-pick the largest rock clusters for maximum efficiency per bomb.
Bomb Efficiency Comparison
| Metric | Cherry Bomb | Bomb | Mega Bomb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craft cost | 4 Cu Ore + 1 Coal | 1 Iron Ore + 4 Coal | 1 Gold Ore + 1 Iron Ore + 1 Coal |
| Approximate gold value of materials | ~60g | ~150g | ~350g (Gold Ore is 400g/bar to smelt) |
| Tiles destroyed (approx.) | ~9 tiles (3×3) | ~36 tiles (6×6) | ~80+ tiles (large radius) |
| Gold value per tile cleared | ~6.7g/tile | ~4.2g/tile | ~4.4g/tile — most efficient by radius |
| Floor ladder reveal speed | Slow | Moderate | Fast — often reveals immediately |
| Skull Cavern usefulness | Poor | Good (Mummy kills) | Excellent — primary tool |
Verdict: Mega Bombs have the best effective efficiency due to their huge radius despite the higher material cost. For Skull Cavern specifically, the Gold Ore cost is justified by floor-skipping potential. Regular Bombs are good for Mummy kills and general Mines use. Cherry Bombs are only for early game.
Best Uses for Bombs
- Skull Cavern deep runs: Mega Bombs clear large rock sections and reveal shafts for floor-skipping — the single most important use.
- Killing Mummies (Skull Cavern floors 70+): Mummies regenerate unless hit by explosion or fire. Bombs destroy the corpse permanently.
- Clearing large rock clusters in regular Mines to speed up floor progression.
- Destroying Ice blocks on frozen floors (Mines floors 40–79) that block access to ladders.
- Breaking open ore deposits in tight cave sections where pickaxe efficiency is low.
- Removing farm obstacles (Large Boulders on your farm) when an Iridium Pickaxe isn't available yet.
Common Bomb Mistakes
- Bringing only Cherry Bombs to Skull Cavern — their small radius is nearly useless at depths where you need fast floor clearing.
- Not stockpiling enough Mega Bombs before a deep run — 10 bombs is insufficient; aim for 30–50.
- Wasting Mega Bombs on isolated rocks when a pickaxe would work fine — save big blasts for dense rock clusters.
- Forgetting that bombs have a fuse delay — throw them into a rock group then immediately move away to avoid damage from your own explosion.
- Not buying from the Dwarf vendor during runs — the Dwarf in the Mines sells bombs during active dungeon sessions, saving the need to exit and craft more.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unlock bomb crafting recipes?
Cherry Bomb unlocks at Mining Level 1, Bomb at Mining Level 6, and Mega Bomb at Mining Level 8. Level your Mining skill by breaking rocks and ore nodes in the Mines.
Can I buy bombs without crafting them?
Yes. The Dwarf merchant (inside the Mines, past Floor 40 — requires all four Dwarvish Scrolls donated to the Museum) sells Cherry Bombs and regular Bombs. Some bombs may also appear at the Traveling Merchant. Crafting is generally cheaper than buying.
How many Mega Bombs should I bring to Skull Cavern?
For a Floor 100 attempt: bring at least 30 Mega Bombs and 20 regular Bombs. Expert players bring 50+ Mega Bombs for guaranteed deep floor clearing. Supplement with Stone Staircases as backup when floors don't yield natural ladders.
Do bombs work on Farm boulders?
Yes — bombs can destroy the large grey boulders on your farm that require a Gold or Iridium Pickaxe otherwise. Just be careful of crops and buildings nearby. Mega Bombs are the fastest way to clear multiple farm boulders at once.
What is the blast radius of a Mega Bomb?
The Mega Bomb has the largest blast radius of any craftable explosive — roughly a 10+ tile radius in all directions. It's visually much larger than a regular Bomb and often clears an entire floor section with one detonation.
