How Breach Encounters Work
Breach encounters appear as large glowing cracks in the ground during map runs. When you approach and click the crack, it expands into a Breach domain — a localized zone where hordes of Breach-specific monsters pour out rapidly. The Breach domain has a timer that starts at approximately 10 seconds but extends each time you kill a Breach monster. An aggressive, fast-killing character can sustain a Breach for 30–60 seconds by maintaining continuous kills, while a slow character might see the Breach close in under 15 seconds.
Breach monsters are densely packed compared to regular map monsters, making area-of-effect skills dramatically more effective inside Breaches than single-target skills. Builds that can hit 30+ enemies per attack (Ranger's Lightning Arrow chains, Warrior's Ground Slam wide cone, Witch's Fireball with proliferation) generate the most kills per second and therefore sustain Breach for the longest duration, collecting the most Splinters and loot.
At the end of the Breach duration, a Breach Boss spawns from the crack with increased health and attack power compared to the boss that appears in a Breachstone run. Killing the Breach Boss in the map awards a large splinter bonus and has a chance to drop a partial Breachstone or special Breach unique items.
Breach Splinters and Breachstones
Every Breach encounter drops Breach Splinters — small currency items specific to the Breach type encountered (Xoph's Breach drops Splinters of Xoph, for example). Splinters automatically stack in your inventory. Collecting 100 Splinters of the same type creates a Breachstone — a special item that can be inserted into the Map Device to open a dedicated Breach realm populated entirely by that Breach type's monsters and culminating in the Breach's own unique boss.
Breachstones come in five power tiers: Normal, Charged, Enriched, Pure, and Flawless. Higher-tier Breachstones are created by using currency upgrade items on lower-tier ones. Flawless Breachstones contain the most monsters and the most dangerous boss variants but yield exponentially better rewards including the rarest Breach unique items. Chayula's Breachstone is the most valuable because it is the hardest to complete (chaos damage is particularly lethal) and drops the strongest Breach unique items.
Running Breachstones is itself an efficient currency farming method separate from collecting Splinters in maps. A single Flawless Xoph Breachstone run can yield multiple Exalted Orbs worth of loot from the dense monster packs inside. Many specialized Breach-farming characters stockpile Breachstones and batch-run them during dedicated sessions.
Breach Farming Map Run Routine
- Location
- T12–T14 Linear Maps (Canyon, Strand)
Steps
- Upgrade Waystone to rare with Orb of Alchemy; insert Breach Scarab (Gilded or better) into Map Device.
- Enter map and clear normally — Breach cracks are visible as glowing ground lines.
- When you encounter a Breach crack, activate it immediately; do not kite enemies away from the crack.
- Focus all AoE damage on the densest enemy cluster inside the Breach to maximize kills per second.
- Pick up Splinters immediately after Breach closes — they auto-pickup if you use a portal back to town (Splinters are not on the ground after map exit).
- Kill the Breach Boss if it spawns at Breach close for bonus Splinters.
- Continue map clear; collect all Breach Splinters into stacks in inventory.
- After each session, combine full Splinter stacks into Breachstones for later use or trade.
Tips
- Never run away from the center of a Breach — moving away causes Breach to close faster.
- Use instant flask topoffs before activating a Breach; the enemy density can spike incoming damage sharply.
- Breach Scarabs (Polished/Gilded/Winged) are worth adding to every map run in a Breach-focused Atlas setup.
Best Atlas Passive Nodes for Breach Farming
- Bountiful Breach: Each Breach in your maps contains additional monsters (directly increases Splinter yield).
- Brute Force: Maps have an additional Breach encounter; with three points, maps can have up to 3 Breaches.
- Amplified Breach: Breach domains last longer; more time = more monsters killed = more loot.
- Rift Splinters: Increased quantity of Breach Splinters dropped by Breach monsters (direct income multiplier).
- Touched by the Breach: Breach monsters have increased chance to drop influenced items (adds extra loot category).
- Bountiful Breachstone: Breachstones used in your Map Device affect a larger area (more monster density in Breachstone runs).
Frequently asked questions
How many Breach encounters can spawn in one map?
By default, maps have a chance to spawn one Breach encounter. With Atlas passive investment in Brute Force (and similar nodes), maps can spawn up to 3 Breach encounters per run. Breach Scarabs also add guaranteed Breach encounters to any map regardless of natural spawn chance.
What is the best Breach type to farm?
Xoph's Breach (Fire) is the best type for most players because Xoph's unique items are the most broadly useful and the Breachstone runs are easiest relative to other types. Chayula's Breach (Chaos) drops the rarest items and Breachstones are worth most on the trade market, but the chaos-damage-heavy content requires capped chaos resistance and strong characters.
Can I sustain Breachstones by farming maps?
Yes. With 15+ Atlas passives invested in Breach and Gilded/Winged Breach Scarabs on every map, you generate approximately one full Breachstone every 3–5 maps of the most common Breach type. Running Breachstones occasionally to reduce stockpile while continuing map farming maintains a balanced approach.
What drops from Breach encounters?
Breach encounters drop Breach Splinters, standard currency orbs, rare and unique items, and Breach-specific items that are influenced by the Breach type (Xoph's items have fire modifiers, etc.). The item quantity bonus inside Breaches is higher than regular map monster spawns, making each Breach encounter significantly more lucrative than the same number of regular monsters.
Are Breach Scarabs worth using?
Yes, always. Even a Normal Breach Scarab pays for itself in Splinter value within the first Breach encounter it generates. Gilded Breach Scarabs add guaranteed Breach encounters with additional monster density. At any budget level, inserting at least one Breach Scarab per map run dramatically improves income consistency.
