How Breach Encounters Work
Inside a map, you may find a 'Clasped Hand' on the ground — when you click it, the Unstable Breach opens and Hiveborn monsters begin pouring out of the rift. The Breach has a short starting timer and a starting radius. Killing Hiveborn within the radius EXTENDS the timer and EXPANDS the radius, so the density of your kill engine directly determines how long the Breach lasts and how many splinters it dumps before stabilizing.
Builds that hit 30+ enemies per attack — Galvanic Shards chain, Ice Strike cleave, Bone Storm radius, Voltaic Grenade detonation chain through Gas — are the strongest Breach farmers because every cast pulls the timer back up. A slow single-target build will see Breaches close before they get rolling. If you specialize in Breach, build around AoE density first and single-target second.
When the Breach stabilizes (either by killing enough Hiveborn or by the timer expiring), it drops a final cluster of loot: Breach Splinters, Breach Catalysts, and (sometimes) a Breach unique item. There is NO 'Breach Boss' that spawns at the end of a map Breach in 0.2.0 — the pinnacle Breach fight happens separately at the Realmgate via a built Breachstone.
Breach Splinters, Breachstones, and the Realmgate
Every Unstable Breach drops Breach Splinters that auto-stack in your inventory. A full stack of splinters combines into a Breachstone. (In 0.2.0 the stack-to-Breachstone count is uniform across the single splinter type — verify the current required count in-game before crafting, since GGG has tuned it between patches.) The Breachstone is consumed when used at the Realmgate.
The Realmgate is the structure at the center of the Atlas of Worlds map. To fight Xesht, place your Breachstone in the Realmgate's pinnacle slot and step through. Xesht is a multi-phase pinnacle boss with a chaos-leaning damage profile and large telegraphed AoE; bring capped chaos resistance and a positioning-friendly build before your first attempt. Bringing the wrong build (slow single-target with no movement skill, or no chaos res) is the most common reason first Xesht attempts fail.
Breach Rings — the most lucrative Breach-specific drops — can be upgraded with Breach Catalysts. Catalysts are an in-Breach currency drop separate from splinters and act as quality/modifier boosters specifically for Breach Rings. Stockpile catalysts when farming so you can roll your own ring upgrades instead of paying inflated trade prices.
Breach Farming Map Run Routine (T12–T15)
- Location
- Atlas cluster around a Tower stacked with Breach Tablets
Steps
- Find / push to a Tower node. Place 2–3 rare Precursor Tablets with 'maps within radius contain a Breach' or 'maps within radius have additional Breaches' mods.
- Roll the surrounding cluster's Waystones with Alchemy → Regal/Exalt to rare. Chaos away a bad mod if Waystone attempts drop too low.
- Enter a cluster map. The Clasped Hand spawns visible on the ground inside.
- Activate the Breach immediately; do not kite enemies away from the Hand. Stay inside the expanding radius.
- Focus all AoE on the densest Hiveborn cluster to maximize kills per second and pump the timer.
- Pick up Splinters, Catalysts, and Breach uniques after the Breach stabilizes.
- Continue clearing the map and finish at the boss. Move to the next map in the Tower cluster.
- After the session, combine full splinter stacks into Breachstones for a Xesht run (or list them on trade).
Tips
- Movement away from the center shrinks the Breach radius — fight inward, not outward.
- Bring a Charm for chaos-damage mitigation if running Hiveborn density in chaos-weak gear.
- Tablets > Atlas passives for short-term burst farming, but the Atlas tree compounds over a full session — invest in both.
Best Atlas Passive Nodes for Breach Farming (0.2.0)
- Bountiful Breach: Each Breach in your maps contains additional Hiveborn monsters — direct Splinter / loot multiplier.
- Brute Force: Maps have an additional Breach encounter — stack with Tablets to push up to 3 Breaches per map.
- Amplified Breach: Breach radius expands faster per kill — extends effective Breach time.
- Rift Splinters: Increased quantity of Breach Splinters dropped — direct currency multiplier.
- Hive Mind: Hiveborn monsters in Breaches have increased chance to drop Breach uniques.
- Breachstone Density: Maps containing Breaches have more Hiveborn packs (synergizes with Tablet'd Towers).
Frequently asked questions
How many Breach encounters can spawn in one map?
By default, maps have a chance to spawn one Breach. With Atlas passive investment ('Brute Force' and similar) plus Precursor Tablets in a Tower covering the map, you can reliably hit 2–3 Breaches per map. Tablets are PoE 2's replacement for PoE 1's Breach Scarabs — there are no Scarabs in PoE 2.
Are there 5 Breach gods like in PoE 1 (Xoph, Tul, Esh, Uul-Netol, Chayula)?
No, not as separate pinnacle access in PoE 2 0.2.0. The Breach god names appear in lore (Acolyte of Chayula is a Monk ascendancy themed after Chayula, and the other gods are referenced in the Xesht fight), but you do NOT collect separate splinters for each god and there are no 5 different Breachstones. Everything funnels into one Breach Splinter type → one Breachstone → one fight (Xesht at the Realmgate).
Can I sustain Breachstones by farming maps?
Yes. With 15+ Atlas passive points invested in Breach plus Breach Tablets on every Tower you run, you can generate a Breachstone roughly every 3–5 juiced maps. That cadence is enough to alternate between mapping sessions and Xesht pinnacle attempts without running dry.
What drops from Breach encounters?
Breach Splinters (currency for the Breachstone), Breach Catalysts (currency for upgrading Breach Rings), normal currency orbs, rare items, and Breach-themed unique items (most notably Breach Rings, plus Breach-flavored amulets and body armours). Loot density inside a fully-extended Breach is dramatically higher than the same map area outside the Breach.
Is Xesht hard?
Yes — Xesht is a real pinnacle boss with multi-phase mechanics, large telegraphed AoEs, and chaos-leaning damage. First-time attempts often fail because of low chaos resistance or no movement skill bound. Bring at least 75% capped elemental res, 40%+ chaos res, a Dodge Roll keybind you trust, and a YouTube fight breakdown to know the phase telegraphs before your first attempt.
