KCD2 Forging the Future Walkthrough — Endgame Smithing Quest

Quest context
Forging the Future is KCD2's penultimate Act 3 quest, triggered after Henry reaches Kuttenberg and completes the Kuttenberg introduction sequence. The setup: a Kuttenberg noble commissions Henry to forge a legendary sword for his coronation. The sword must meet specific quality thresholds (95+ damage, 90+ durability) to satisfy the noble's standards. Failure on the forge fails the quest entirely — there is no retry.
The quest is gated behind the Craftsmanship skill tree. Henry needs Craftsmanship 15+ with the Master Hammer perk to even attempt the forging minigame. Players who skipped blacksmithing throughout Act 1-2 hit a hard wall here and must grind Craftsmanship before continuing. The grind takes ~6 hours of repeated horseshoe forging.
The quest unlocks the canonical 'best' main story ending. There are alternative endings that do not require Forging the Future, but the canonical ending requires this quest's successful completion. Failing the forge or skipping the quest entirely locks the canonical ending — only the alternative endings remain accessible.
Quest prerequisites
- Complete Kuttenberg introduction sequence (~3 hours of Act 3 onboarding).
- Craftsmanship 15+ with Master Hammer perk unlocked.
- Optional but recommended: spared Karel in All That Glisters exoneration ending — Karel reduces forging difficulty.
- 3 Iron Ingots, 1 Steel Ingot in inventory (sourceable from Kuttenberg blacksmith for 200g total).
- 1 Reichersdorf Ingot — unique crafting material from the Reichersdorf merchant chain (exoneration ending in All That Glisters).
- 1 Savior Schnapps to save before the forge attempt — no retry if failed.
Phase 1 — Noble commission and material gathering
Quest opens in the Kuttenberg central square. The noble (Vavrik of Kuttenberg) approaches Henry directly — there is no investigation phase to find him. He provides the commission details: a legendary longsword to his exact specifications, requiring 3 Iron Ingots + 1 Steel Ingot + 1 Reichersdorf Ingot as the base mats.
Material sourcing: Iron and Steel Ingots are standard Kuttenberg blacksmith merchandise (~200g total for the required quantities). Reichersdorf Ingot is the unique mat — only available from the Reichersdorf merchant chain, which is gated behind All That Glisters' exoneration ending. If you took a different ending in All That Glisters, the Reichersdorf Ingot must be purchased from a black-market dealer in Kuttenberg for 1500g (5x normal cost).
After mat collection, return to Vavrik. He directs Henry to the master forge in Kuttenberg's blacksmith district. The forge is reserved for Henry's exclusive use for the quest duration — no other smiths are present, no time pressure (you can wait at the forge as long as needed).
Phase 2 — The forging minigame
Approach the master anvil and interact to begin the forging minigame. Without Karel (apprentice ally), the sequence is 8 hammer strikes. With Karel, it's 6 strikes (Karel handles the first two prep strikes).
Each strike has a timing meter that swings between green (perfect), yellow (acceptable), and red (miss). Click the action button when the meter is in green for a perfect strike, yellow for acceptable. Red strikes count as missed strikes. Missing more than 2 ruins the sword and fails the quest.
The strike sequence escalates in difficulty: strikes 1-3 have a wide green window (~1.2 seconds); strikes 4-6 narrow to medium green (~0.8 seconds); strikes 7-8 narrow to small green (~0.4 seconds). The Master Hammer perk widens all greens by 20% — without it, the late strikes are nearly impossible without exceptional reflexes.
Recommended loadout for Forging the Future
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Skill | Craftsmanship 15+ with Master Hammer perk | Hard prerequisite — quest fails without this skill level |
| Mats | 3 Iron Ingot + 1 Steel Ingot + 1 Reichersdorf Ingot | Iron + Steel from Kuttenberg blacksmith; Reichersdorf Ingot from exoneration chain |
| Outfit | Blacksmith apron + leather gloves | Workshop attire — no skill effect but cosmetic for the ending cutscene |
| Consumables | 1 Bardo Potion (optional) | +10% precision on timing meters; situational, mainly for the difficult late strikes |
| Quest item | Vavrik's commission letter | Auto-equipped after noble briefing; do not sell |
| Optional ally | Karel (Forge apprentice) | Only available if All That Glisters exoneration ending — reduces strikes from 8 to 6 |
Forging sequence step-by-step (without Karel)
- Save with Savior Schnapps at the Kuttenberg blacksmith bench. Critical — no retry on failure.
- Interact with the master anvil. Vavrik observes from the workshop entrance.
- Strike 1 — Heat the Iron Ingots. Wide green window (~1.2s). Easy.
- Strike 2 — Combine Iron + Steel. Wide green window (~1.2s). Easy.
- Strike 3 — Shape the blade. Medium-wide green window (~1.0s).
- Strike 4 — Fold the steel. Medium green window (~0.8s).
- Strike 5 — Apply the Reichersdorf Ingot layer. Medium green window (~0.8s).
- Strike 6 — Shape the cutting edge. Narrow-medium green window (~0.7s).
- Strike 7 — Polish the blade. Narrow green window (~0.5s).
- Strike 8 — Final temper. Very narrow green window (~0.4s) — this is the hardest strike.
- Result: a legendary longsword (98 slash / 95 stab / 92 durability / +5 Charisma when worn).
- Present the sword to Vavrik. Receive 2000 groschen + Vavrik's noble pendant + canonical ending unlock.
Karel-supported vs Solo forging
| Aspect | With Karel | Without Karel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total strikes | Total strikes | 6 (Karel does first 2) | 8 |
| Difficulty curve | Difficulty curve | Medium-narrow only | Wide to very narrow (full ramp) |
| Average success rate | Average success rate | ~95% on Craftsmanship 15 | ~65% on Craftsmanship 15 |
| Requirement | Requirement | All That Glisters exoneration ending | Standard quest path |
| Final sword stats | Final sword stats | Same legendary stats | Same legendary stats |
Verdict: Karel-supported forging is significantly easier and has a much higher success rate. The 30% delta is the entire reason completionist players prioritise the All That Glisters exoneration ending. Without Karel, expect 2-3 reload attempts before clearing the forge.
Phase 3 — Sword presentation and ending unlock
After successful forging, present the legendary sword to Vavrik. He inspects it (auto-cutscene, no input), declares it suitable for his coronation, and pays the 2000 groschen reward. He also gifts Vavrik's noble pendant (+8 Charisma in noble dialogue, accessory slot).
Quest completes and the canonical ending becomes accessible. The next main story quest (the final coronation sequence) unlocks 24 in-game hours later, where Vavrik wears the sword publicly and Henry attends as guest of honor. This is the canonical ending cutscene with the most positive Henry epilogue.
Alternative consequence: if you failed the forge (more than 2 missed strikes), Vavrik dismisses you. The canonical ending is locked. The main story continues but Vavrik becomes hostile and you take the alternative ending where Henry leaves Kuttenberg under suspicion. The reward structure is significantly worse.
Common mistakes that fail Forging the Future
- Forgetting to save with Savior Schnapps before the forge. No retry — failed attempt locks canonical ending.
- Attempting without Craftsmanship 15+. The Master Hammer perk is required for the late strikes; without it, success rate drops below 30%.
- Buying Reichersdorf Ingot from black-market for 1500g without realizing the All That Glisters chain provides it for free. Players who completed exoneration already have one.
- Trying to strike before the meter reaches green. Anticipating throws off timing — wait for the actual green zone.
- Mashing the strike button. Each strike has a 0.5-second cooldown; mashing wastes inputs.
- Selling the legendary sword for groschen. It's worth 8000g on the merchant menu but Vavrik refuses to accept any other sword — selling locks the canonical ending.
- Skipping the noble pendant after presentation. +8 Charisma is significant for late-game noble dialogue.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do Forging the Future without Craftsmanship 15?
No. Master Hammer perk is a hard prerequisite. Without it, the forging minigame's late strikes (7-8) have a green window so narrow (~0.2s) that success requires near-frame-perfect reflexes — and even then, the math punishes you. Train Craftsmanship to 15 via repeated horseshoe forging (~6 hours of grind) before attempting this quest.
What's the easiest way to level Craftsmanship fast?
Horseshoe loop. From Trosky blacksmith, buy raw Iron Ingots (~5g each), forge into horseshoes at the forge (each forge attempt = 250 XP), sell horseshoes back for ~4g each. Net cost ~1g per attempt, ~250 XP per attempt. To go from Craftsmanship 8 (typical mid-game) to 15 takes ~6 hours of horseshoe forging. See the Craftsmanship Skill guide for the full grind.
Why do I need the Reichersdorf Ingot?
Vavrik's commission requires a Reichersdorf-quality steel layer for the blade. The Reichersdorf Ingot is the only mat that meets the quality threshold. Available through All That Glisters exoneration chain (free) or Kuttenberg black-market dealer (1500g, 5x cost). Players who skipped All That Glisters or chose a different ending must buy from black-market.
Does Karel really make that much difference?
Yes. Karel handles the first 2 (wide-window) strikes, leaving Henry only the medium-to-narrow strikes 3-8. The success rate jumps from ~65% to ~95% on Craftsmanship 15. The 30% delta is the difference between 'reliable first-attempt' and 'expect 2-3 reload attempts'. Always prioritise the All That Glisters exoneration ending to unlock Karel.
What happens if I fail the forge?
Vavrik dismisses you. The canonical ending is locked. The main story continues with an alternative ending where Henry leaves Kuttenberg under suspicion. The reward structure is significantly worse (no 2000g, no noble pendant, no legendary sword). If you saved with Savior Schnapps before the forge, reload and retry — the canonical ending is preserved.
How long does the quest take?
Without grinding Craftsmanship: ~3 hours (noble commission + material sourcing + forge attempt + presentation). With Craftsmanship grind: +6 hours of pre-quest preparation. Without Karel support: 3-4 reload attempts on average, adding ~20 minutes of total time.
