KCD2 Alchemy Recipes Guide — Best Potions, Brewing Steps, and Selling Tips

KCD2 alchemy recipes guide — Henry brewing potions at a medieval cauldron

Why alchemy is the best non-quest gold source

KCD2's alchemy minigame is intentionally fiddly — you grind herbs at a mortar, boil water at a cauldron, add ingredients in a specific order, wait specific in-game time, then bottle. The minigame frustrates many players, but once mastered it's the most profitable activity in the game outside of major quests.

Why? Herbs are cheap or free. Finished potions sell for 4-10x the cost of raw ingredients. A single brewing session of 30 minutes can produce 15-20 potions worth 1500+ groschen, then you sell at a Kuttenberg apothecary for a bonus markup. Compare to bandit fighting (200-400 groschen/hour and risk of death) and alchemy wins easily.

The other benefit: brewing your own potions means infinite Savior Schnapps (the save-game potion), free Marigold Decoctions (healing), and free combat buffs (Bowman, Padfoot, Bard). You stop spending groschen at apothecaries and start earning from them.

Where to brew (cauldron locations)

  1. Trosky Inn cellar — pay innkeeper 5g/day for access. Cauldron + herb storage chest provided.
  2. Suchdol monastery garden — free for Henry after completing the 'Forging the Future' early intro.
  3. Kuttenberg apothecary back room — most prestigious location, 10g/day but access to rare ingredients.
  4. Mutt's hunting camp (post-Houndmaster intro) — outdoor cauldron, no fee, but exposed to weather.
  5. Any personal home you've earned via main quest progression — free, secure, and unlimited storage nearby.

How the brewing minigame works

Every alchemy recipe follows the same general structure: grind solid ingredients at the mortar, fill the cauldron with water, light the fire (you need wood), boil the water to the right state (bubbling, not foaming), add ingredients in the recipe's stated order, wait the recipe's stated number of in-game turns (counted by the hourglass), then bottle.

If you miss the order or the timing by more than 1 turn, you get a degraded potion (50% effectiveness). Miss by 2+ turns and the potion fails entirely, wasting all ingredients. The brewing window has audio cues — listen for the bubbling sound to gauge boil intensity.

Alchemy skill levels reduce mistakes and improve potion quality. At Alchemy 3, your potions are slightly stronger. At Alchemy 5, you can brew without reading the recipe book each time. At Alchemy 10, you can double-up batches (brew 2 doses at once for the same time cost).

Detailed recipe: Savior Schnapps (the must-brew)

Savior Schnapps is the highest-ROI potion in the game because you save groschen every time you brew instead of buying. Each apothecary-bought Savior Schnapps costs 90 groschen; your home-brewed dose costs roughly 30 groschen in ingredients. Brew 30 doses in a session = 1800 groschen savings vs purchase.

Savior Schnapps brewing steps

  1. Open recipe book. Confirm: 2 Nettles, 1 Belladonna, Schnapps base.
  2. Approach mortar. Grind 2 Nettles to powder (3 button presses each, 6 total).
  3. Approach cauldron. Pour Schnapps base into cauldron.
  4. Light fire if not already lit (needs 1 wood log).
  5. Wait for boil. Listen for bubbling sound; visual cue is rising steam. Boil reaches optimal state at ~30 seconds real-time.
  6. Add ground Nettle powder. Stir once (single stir motion, not multiple).
  7. Wait 1 turn (advance the hourglass once).
  8. Add 1 fresh Belladonna (do NOT grind — Belladonna goes in whole).
  9. Wait 2 more turns.
  10. Bottle. You should produce 1 Savior Schnapps. Repeat for batches.

Ingredient farming locations

Herb gathering is itself a profitable activity once you have the Herbalism perk. The locations below have respawning herbs (3-5 in-game days).

Selling potions: where to maximize prices

Apothecary buyer prices vary by region. Always sell finished potions in Kuttenberg if your reputation allows — Kuttenberg apothecaries pay 30% more than Trosky. The travel time is worth it once you have a horse.

The best apothecary in KCD2 is the Kuttenberg main square shop (run by Apolena). She offers premium prices on combat buffs (Bowman, Padfoot) and bulk discounts on volume sales of 20+ doses.

Selling Savior Schnapps is not recommended — keep them for personal use. The other 9 potions in the top-10 list above are all sell-worthy. Profit per session of 30 minutes brewing: roughly 1500-2500 groschen.

Alchemy session checklist

  1. Stockpile herbs: minimum 20 Nettle, 15 Belladonna, 25 Marigold, 10 Valerian, 15 Eyebright.
  2. Have at least 5 of each potion base: Water, Wine, Oil, Schnapps. (Bases are cheap from apothecaries; buy in bulk.)
  3. Reach a cauldron with permission to use it (paid inn access or your own home).
  4. Open recipe book to your top-profit recipe.
  5. Brew a batch of 5-10 doses of one recipe before switching — recipe-switching wastes prep time.
  6. After session, head to Kuttenberg apothecary. Sell everything except Savior Schnapps and Marigold Decoctions.
  7. Save game (with one of the Schnapps you just brewed!) before fast-traveling away.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I learn alchemy recipes?

Recipes come from books and from NPCs. The starter Recipe Book is given by Father Godwin or the Trosky monastery monks (free). Additional recipes are sold by apothecaries (20-80 groschen each) or earned from Wishes/side quests. Read each recipe at least once to add it to Henry's recipe book — he can't brew unmemorized recipes.

Why does my brewing minigame keep failing?

Most failures come from one of three causes: adding ingredients in wrong order, waiting too many or too few turns, or using the wrong base liquid (water vs wine vs oil vs schnapps). Always reference the recipe book BEFORE starting the brew, not during. The book closes when you approach the cauldron.

Can I brew while drunk?

Technically yes, but Alcoholism debuff reduces accuracy on the timing windows. Avoid brewing immediately after multiple Schnapps saves. Sleep off Alcoholism before a long brewing session — 6 hours of sleep usually clears it.

Is brewing worth it for solo play or only for quest progression?

Solo play massively benefits. Brewing 30 Savior Schnapps means 30 free save attempts that would otherwise cost 2700 groschen. Brewing combat potions like Bowman (+30% bow damage for 5 min) trivializes ranged combat in tough fights. Quest progression is also smoother because you have unlimited heals via Marigold Decoction.

What's the best base potion to stock up on?

Schnapps base — used for Savior Schnapps, Hair o' the Dog, and several alcohol-based recipes. Buy 30 Schnapps bases at the Trosky innkeeper (5 groschen each = 150g for 30 saves' worth of base material). Wine base is second priority for Bowman and Bard potions.

Can I sell potions to all apothecaries?

Yes, but Kuttenberg apothecary pays 30% more than Trosky and Suchdol. The travel time is worth it once you have a horse. Trosky and Suchdol apothecaries are still buyers but at base rates — useful for emergency cash, not for long-term sale of brew sessions.
