Wishes Quest System Silksong — Hornet reading the Wish Wall in Bellhart village

What Wishes are and how they replace the old quest system

Wishes are Silksong's first proper quest system — a deliberate departure from Hollow Knight 1's loose dream-dialogue model. In HK1, side content existed but never had a UI tracker, completion log, or reward structure beyond the mood and lore the developer wrote. Silksong fixes this by adding two Wish Walls (Bellhart and Whiteward) where NPCs literally post Wishes for Hornet to fulfil.

The UI is straightforward: walk up to a Wish Wall, scroll through the list, tap A to activate a Wish (costs nothing), and the Wish enters your active tracker in the inventory. The tracker shows the prerequisite (often 'kill X enemies' or 'find Y item'), your current progress, and the reward tier on completion. Multiple Wishes can be active simultaneously — there is no slot limit.

Three reward tiers exist: Tier 1 Wishes (most common) give 250-500 rosaries; Tier 2 Wishes give a Tool unlock, a Charm, or a Silk Spool; Tier 3 Wishes give a lore key (Resonance Key fragment) tied to the true ending. Every Tier 3 Wish is also Wish-expirable — meaning if you fight a specific boss before completing the Wish, the Wish locks permanently. Players who don't read this guide often lose 1-2 Tier 3 Wishes on their first playthrough.

How to activate and track a Wish

Activating a Wish costs nothing — walk up to the Wish Wall, scroll to the Wish you want, and press A. The Wish enters your inventory tracker (visible by opening inventory → Wishes tab). Each Wish shows the prerequisite text, your current progress (e.g., '8 / 50 tax collectors killed'), and the reward tier icon.

Wishes are persistent until completed or expired. You can have all 38 Wishes active simultaneously — there is no slot or active-Wish cap. Most Wishes auto-track on relevant kills or pickups (no need to re-visit the Wish Wall mid-quest). A few require specific dialogue triggers — those are noted in their prerequisite text.

Completed Wishes must be handed in at the Wish Wall where they were activated (i.e., Bellhart Wishes hand in at Bellhart, Whiteward Wishes at Whiteward). The hand-in is free and instant. Some Tier 2/3 Wishes require an additional dialogue choice at hand-in that affects the reward (e.g., 'Echoes Below' hand-in lets you choose between 400 rosaries OR a Silk Spool — pick Silk Spool).

Step-by-step Wish workflow

  1. Visit Bellhart Wish Wall on first arrival (after Bell Beast). Activate every Wish that's not greyed out — costs nothing.
  2. Open inventory → Wishes tab to see active Wish tracker with progress per Wish.
  3. Play normally. Most Wishes auto-track on kills, pickups, or Wish-specific NPC dialogues.
  4. On completion (tracker shows 'Ready to claim'), return to the Wish Wall where the Wish was activated.
  5. Hand in for reward. For Tier 2/3 Wishes with a dialogue choice, pick the rarest reward option (Silk Spool > rosaries; lore key > Tool unlock).
  6. Repeat for all 22 Bellhart Wishes, then activate Whiteward Wishes when chapel quest opens.
  7. Citadel terminus board opens post-Carmelita — activate the final 4 Wishes there for true-ending lore keys.

Reward tiers and what to expect

TierCommon rewardsWish countImportance
Tier 1Tier 1250-500 rosaries~22 of 38Convenient cash injection
Tier 2Tier 2Tool unlock, Charm, or Silk Spool~11 of 38Build-altering — never skip
Tier 3Tier 3Lore key / Resonance Key fragment~5 of 38Required for true ending

Verdict: Tier 1 Wishes are background income — clear them whenever convenient. Tier 2 Wishes change your build (Parry Charm, Magnetite Crystal, Witherspit Tool) — prioritise them. Tier 3 Wishes are mandatory for the true ending — five of them expire if you don't track which boss locks each one.

The 5 expirable Wishes — full breakdown

Five Wishes expire if you progress past the listed boss. Each was designed to give players a sense of consequence: 'this NPC wants help before something bad happens to them.' Lore-flavour aside, missing any one of them costs a lore key or a Resonance Key fragment, both required for the true ending. Memorise the list and check it before any boss fight.

'Echoes Below' (Greymoor) — pre-Carmelita. The Greymoor NPC begs Hornet to find a relic before the cult ritual. After Carmelita, the cult ritual has happened in-fiction and the Wish auto-fails. Reward: Resonance Key fragment 1 of 3.

'Sinner's Peace' (Sinner's Road) — pre-Crowned. The Sinner's Road NPC asks Hornet to retrieve a Witherspit Tool for poison defence. After Crowned, the NPC is dead in-fiction. Reward: Witherspit Tool — cornerstone of any Shaman build.

'Stitched Sister' (Whiteward) — pre-Carmelita. The Whiteward seamstress asks Hornet to gather 5 Silk Threads. After Carmelita, the seamstress is gone. Reward: spawns Pinstress boss in the back chapel room (and a Resonance Key fragment).

'Lost Hymn' (Greymoor) — pre-Trobbio. The wandering pilgrim asks Hornet to play the Needolin at a specific shrine. After Trobbio, the pilgrim leaves the region forever. Reward: 1 Mask Shard.

'Veiled Mourner' (Bellhart) — pre-Last Judge. The Bellhart mourner asks Hornet to retrieve a memento from Sinner's Road. After Last Judge, the mourner has accepted loss in-fiction. Reward: lore tablet + Resonance Key fragment 2 of 3.

Optimal Wish completion order (chapter-aligned)

  1. Chapter 1 (Moss Grotto + Bonebottom): activate Bellhart Wishes on first visit — focus on Tax Day, Cartographer, Lost Hymn, Veiled Mourner.
  2. Chapter 2 (Far Fields + Deep Docks): complete Tax Day (50 tax collectors), Cartographer (find 5 region maps), Lost Hymn (Needolin Greymoor pilgrim).
  3. Chapter 3 (Greymoor + Whiteward): complete Echoes Below (Needolin pickup), activate Stitched Sister, Sister's Hymn, Veiled Mourner.
  4. Chapter 4 (Sinner's Road): complete Sinner's Peace (Witherspit Tool unlock) BEFORE Crowned.
  5. Chapter 5 (Cogwork Core): complete remaining mid-tier Wishes (Crust King ones, Cogwork lore tablets).
  6. Chapter 6 (Citadel): activate the 4 final terminus-board Wishes. Hand in true-ending Wishes (Crowned's Lament, Eternal Vigil).

Common Wish mistakes

  • Not activating Wishes on first Bellhart visit. Activation is free — no reason to wait.
  • Forgetting to hand in completed Wishes. Auto-tracking marks completion, but the reward only triggers on Wall hand-in.
  • Picking rosaries over Silk Spool in 'Echoes Below' hand-in. Silk Spool is worth ~1,200 rosaries in effective build value; always pick the rare option.
  • Fighting Carmelita before completing the four pre-Carmelita expirable Wishes. Lost Wishes cannot be reactivated.
  • Ignoring the Veiled Mourner Wish in Bellhart. It unlocks a Resonance Key fragment AND a lore tablet — Tier 3 reward despite the early-game appearance.
  • Activating Wishes from Whiteward Wall and trying to hand in at Bellhart. Wishes hand in at their origin Wall — Bellhart Wishes to Bellhart, Whiteward Wishes to Whiteward.

Frequently asked questions

How many Wishes are there in Silksong?

38 total — 22 at the Bellhart Wish Wall, 12 at the Whiteward chapel Wall, and 4 at the post-Carmelita Citadel terminus board. Five of them expire if you fight specific bosses before completing them. The true ending requires three Resonance Keys, of which two come from expirable Wishes ('Echoes Below' and 'Veiled Mourner') plus one from Pinstress (unlocked by 'Stitched Sister' Wish).

Which Wishes expire?

Five Wishes expire on boss kill: 'Echoes Below' expires after Carmelita; 'Sinner's Peace' expires after Crowned; 'Stitched Sister' expires after Carmelita; 'Lost Hymn' expires after Trobbio; 'Veiled Mourner' expires after Last Judge. Activate all five on first Bellhart/Whiteward visit and finish them before the listed boss.

Does activating a Wish cost anything?

No — activation is free. There is no slot limit either; you can have all 38 Wishes active simultaneously. The only resource cost is your time completing the Wish prerequisites.

Where do I hand in completed Wishes?

Each Wish hands in at the Wall where it was activated: Bellhart Wishes at Bellhart Wish Wall, Whiteward Wishes at Whiteward chapel Wall, Citadel terminus Wishes at the Citadel terminus board. Hand-in is free and instant.

Are Wishes tracked automatically?

Yes — most Wishes auto-track on kills, pickups, or NPC dialogues. A few (e.g., 'Cartographer', 'Lost Hymn') require specific dialogue triggers detailed in the Wish prerequisite text. Open inventory → Wishes tab to see active progress per Wish.

What's the best reward to pick at Wish hand-in?

When given a dialogue choice between rosaries and a rare item, always pick the rare item. Silk Spools, Mask Shards, Charms, and Tool unlocks are worth far more than the rosary alternative (which is usually 400-500). The only exception is if you're saving for a specific shop purchase and the rosary delta clears it.

Can I lose Wishes in any other way?

Only via the 5 expirable Wishes' boss-kill triggers. There is no time-of-day, in-game-day, or save-file expiry. Failed combat attempts don't lock Wishes. The 5 boss expirations are the only permanent loss conditions.
