10 Things Silksong Doesn't Tell You — Beginner Tips

By Z. LiPublished Updated Last verified
Silksong beginner tips checklist — 10 hidden systems shown on the Bellhart bench overlay UI

Why Silksong's tutorial leaves gaps

Team Cherry kept Silksong's tutorial minimal — about 30 minutes of guided early Moss Grotto play and a 10-second pop-up for Bind heal. That's it. Every other mechanic in the game (rosary recovery, Crest swap, Wish activation, Cartographer pin map, parry timing) is left for you to discover by experimentation or, more likely, by getting frustrated and Googling it.

This guide collects the 10 systems most commonly missed in the first 5 hours of play. Each tip identifies the system, explains how it actually works, and recommends what to do differently. Reading this list before reaching Bellhart will save you ~3 hours of trial-and-error and ~2,000 rosaries in avoidable losses.

Tip 1 — The rosary bag decays in 5 minutes

  • When you die, ALL carried rosaries drop in a 'rosary bag' at the death location.
  • The bag's recovery percentage decays over real-time (not game-time): 100% at 0-1 min, 75% at 1-3 min, 50% at 3-5 min, 25% indefinitely after 5 min.
  • Dying AGAIN before recovering the first bag OVERWRITES it permanently — first bag is gone.
  • What to do: walk back carefully even if you take 4 minutes (still recover 50%); never sprint into more enemies; bank rosaries at the Bellhart banker NPC before any hard boss fight.

Tip 2 — Bind is cancellable with dodge

  • Pressing dodge during the Bind heal animation cancels the heal mid-cast.
  • You lose the silk spent on masks already healed, BUT Hornet gets dodge i-frames during the dodge animation.
  • This is the difference between dying mid-Bind to a surprise attack and surviving by cancelling, dodging, and re-binding 0.5 seconds later.
  • What to do: practice Bind cancel in Moss Grotto on the spore enemies. Hold Bind, dodge mid-animation. Get muscle memory before chapter 3 bosses.

Tip 3 — Preset Crests at any bench (no backtracking)

  • Once you've unlocked a Crest at its shrine, the Crest swap is available at EVERY bench in the game — not just the unlock shrine.
  • You don't need to walk back to the Reaper shrine to swap to Reaper. Sit at any bench, open the Crest menu, swap.
  • Crests can be swapped mid-fight ONLY by dying and respawning at the bench — there's no swap option while in combat.
  • What to do: keep your 'main' Crest (Hunter) equipped 90% of the time. Swap to Reaper for farming runs, Wanderer for traversal puzzles, all from the bench. Treat the swap as zero-cost.

Tip 4 — The Cartographer Wish unlocks pin maps

  • Activate the 'Cartographer' Wish at the Bellhart Wish Wall (free; 22 Wishes there total).
  • The Wish requires finding 5 region maps from various vendors (Hesper sells 2, Whiteward chapel has 1, Deep Docks vendor has 1, Greymoor pilgrim has 1).
  • Completion reward: 400 rosaries PLUS unlock of the 'Pinmap Tracker' which shows precise icons for every uncollected Silk Spool, Mask Shard, and resonance site.
  • What to do: prioritise the Cartographer Wish. Without the Pinmap Tracker, you'll backtrack 5-10 hours hunting collectibles. With it, the map becomes legible.

Tip 5 — Mossberries never decay

  • Mossberries are permanent inventory items — they don't expire over time or convert to lesser items.
  • Default cap is 5; the Mossberry Pouch (Bone Bottom Tool shop, 220 rosaries) raises it to 20.
  • You can farm Mossberries in chapter 1 and still have them in chapter 6 for the Crust King attrition fight.
  • What to do: buy the Mossberry Pouch immediately. Farm Moss Grotto's 5-minute loop until you have 20 Mossberries. Hold them indefinitely; they pay off in late game.

Tip 6 — Bench-save fully restores silk and HP

  • Sitting at any bench auto-restores HP to full AND silk to full.
  • This means there's no benefit to walking into a boss fight with a partial silk meter — bench-save first, enter at full.
  • Banking rosaries at the Bellhart banker NPC requires a separate action (NOT auto-banked on bench save). Rosaries on hand still drop on death.
  • What to do: bench-save EVERY time before a hard boss attempt. The fast-travel pin (Pinmaster, 300 rosaries) makes Bellhart your home base — fast-travel back, save, fast-travel forward.

Tip 7 — Tools refund silk via damage ticks

  • Damage-over-time Tools (Plasmium Phial, poison stacks, Witherspit) refund 1 silk per tick that lands on an enemy.
  • A 3-tick Plasmium Phial cast (8 silk) refunds 3 silk during its 4-second duration, net cost 5 silk.
  • Volt Filament refunds 2 silk per stun hit on enemies still active.
  • What to do: include at least one DoT or volt Tool in your build — they functionally cost less silk than the menu shows. This is why Witch and Shaman Crest builds have such strong silk economy.

Tip 8 — Parry has an 8-frame active window

  • Parry is the new defensive option in Silksong — pressing block at the right time deflects parry-only attacks and triggers a riposte for free damage.
  • The parry active window is 8 frames (~0.13 seconds at 60fps).
  • Pre-input is allowed: you can press block up to 4 frames BEFORE the enemy's attack lands. Late press by even 1 frame fails the parry.
  • What to do: practice parry on Lace's ribbon sweep (her parry-only attack is well-telegraphed). Once you can consistently parry her sweep, the boss melts. The 8-frame window is achievable; don't trust the 'parry is too tight' Reddit complaints.

Tip 9 — Bell Beast can be skipped (but don't)

  • With Wanderer Crest + Clawline (unlocks Deep Docks via the elevator shortcut), you can technically skip the Bell Beast bridge fight entirely.
  • This is a sequence break used by speedrunners. It saves ~5 minutes on a casual run.
  • BUT: skipping Bell Beast means missing his guaranteed Magnetite Crystal drop, the 1 Mask Shard reward, and the cinematic that opens Bellhart's south Mister Mosaic shop.
  • What to do: do NOT skip Bell Beast on a first run. The drops and shop unlock are worth more than 5 minutes saved. Save sequence-breaking for second playthroughs.

Tip 10 — Every Wish is FREE to activate

  • Wish activation at Bellhart, Whiteward, or Citadel terminus costs NO rosaries.
  • There is no slot limit — you can have all 38 Wishes active simultaneously.
  • Five Wishes EXPIRE if you fight specific bosses before completing them (Echoes Below before Carmelita; Sinner's Peace before Crowned; Stitched Sister before Carmelita; Lost Hymn before Trobbio; Veiled Mourner before Last Judge).
  • What to do: activate EVERY Wish on first visit to each Wish Wall. Zero cost, zero risk, only upside. Re-check the wall after every chapter for new entries.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important Silksong beginner tip?

Activate every Wish at Bellhart on first visit. Wishes are free to activate and 5 of them expire if you fight specific bosses before completing them. Missing the expirable Wishes locks the true ending. The second-most important tip is to bank rosaries at the Bellhart banker NPC before any hard boss attempt.

Can I cancel a Bind heal?

Yes — pressing dodge during the Bind animation cancels the heal and grants dodge i-frames. You lose silk spent on already-healed masks but Hornet survives the cancel-dodge combo. This is essential for surviving surprise attacks during long heals. Practice it on Moss Grotto spore enemies before chapter 3.

How does the rosary recovery actually work?

On death, all carried rosaries drop in a 'rosary bag' at the death location. The bag's recovery percentage decays over real time: 100% at 0-1 min, 75% at 1-3 min, 50% at 3-5 min, 25% indefinitely after 5 min. Dying AGAIN before recovering overwrites the first bag — losing all rosaries permanently.

Where do I swap Crests?

At ANY bench in the game, once a Crest is unlocked. You do NOT need to return to the original unlock shrine. Just sit at a bench, open the Crest menu, swap. The swap is zero-cost and unlimited per session. Treat Crest swapping as a casual decision, not a commitment.

Are Mossberries worth farming early?

Yes — Mossberries don't decay or expire, so farming in chapter 1 holds value into chapter 6. The Crust King attrition fight (chapter 5+) requires 20-30 Mossberries. Buy the Mossberry Pouch (Bone Bottom, 220 rosaries) immediately and farm a 5-minute Moss Grotto loop until inventory is full.

What is the parry timing window?

Parry has an 8-frame active window (~0.13 seconds at 60fps) with up to 4 frames of pre-input grace. Pressing block 1-4 frames before the enemy's attack lands triggers the parry. Late press by even 1 frame fails. Practice on Lace's ribbon sweep — it's the most well-telegraphed parry-only attack in the early game.

Should I worry about Wish expiration?

Yes for the 5 expirable Wishes: Echoes Below (pre-Carmelita), Sinner's Peace (pre-Crowned), Stitched Sister (pre-Carmelita), Lost Hymn (pre-Trobbio), Veiled Mourner (pre-Last Judge). Missing any of them locks out true-ending content. All other Wishes have no expiration. Activate all 22 Bellhart Wishes on first visit to avoid this.
