Primary Rune Sources — Where to Farm Efficiently

Field enemies are the baseline rune source in Nightreign. Every enemy killed drops runes proportional to its power level. Standard camp soldiers drop 50–200 runes each; elite camp enemies drop 200–500; mini-bosses guarding camps drop 1,000–3,000. The density of enemy camps in Limveld means a team that clears every camp they pass through during a day phase will accumulate significant runes purely from incidental combat without needing to specifically grind.

Field bosses are the highest single-source rune reward in each day phase. A field boss at the appropriate day — Day 1 minor field bosses drop 3,000–6,000 runes; Day 2 major field bosses drop 6,000–12,000 runes. Each field boss also has a guaranteed weapon drop (often higher rarity than starting equipment) and a chance to drop special materials. Field bosses are the highest-priority activities if the team is behind on rune levels, as a single fight can close a three-level deficit.

Grace sites and Sites of Lost Grace in Limveld (repurposed from Elden Ring's bonfires) do not grant rune levels but serve as safe rest points that restore Sacred Flask charges. Activating them also marks the location on the map for teammate visibility. In a three-player run, the first player to reach a grace site should immediately activate it for the team's map intelligence even if they do not need to rest.

Rune Arches — The Fastest Level-Ups

Rune Arches are special golden archways found in churches, some ruins, and occasional camp shrines throughout Limveld. Interacting with a Rune Arch instantly grants a flat rune level boost — typically 2 full rune levels per arch. This is the fastest possible rune gain in the game: a single Rune Arch interaction is equivalent to 10–15 minutes of continuous field enemy farming at Day 1 rune values. Locating and using every Rune Arch available on the current Expedition's map is the single highest-priority optimization for experienced teams.

Churches reliably contain Rune Arches and are the most efficient first-day destination. A church near the starting area, visited within the first two minutes of Day 1, can put the team 2 full rune levels ahead of what normal enemy farming would provide by that time. Churches also grant a Sacred Flask charge top-up and occasionally contain rare equipment items in the altar area. The combination of rune arch + flask restock + possible weapon drop makes churches the single most information-dense locations in Limveld per time spent.

Not all Rune Arches appear in the same location between Expeditions because Limveld is procedurally varied. Church locations shift and the rune arch status of specific buildings changes per run. Developing a mental map of where churches tend to cluster in Limveld's different zone types (forest areas tend toward northwest, ruins cluster in the center, coastal areas toward east) lets experienced players efficiently route toward likely arch locations within the first 60 seconds of each day phase.

Optimal Day 1 Rune Route (3-Player Team)

Limveld starting area and surrounding zones

Steps

  1. Spawn in: immediately identify the nearest church icon on the mini-map; one player routes to it while the other two clear nearby enemy camps.
  2. Church player: activate Rune Arch (2 levels), collect flask top-up, check for weapon drops in altar area, report location to teammates.
  3. Camp players: clear all enemy camps in the starting quadrant; collect any rune-granting items (Golden Rune items scale with day phase).
  4. Reunite: meet at the field boss marker on the map (field boss icons appear from the start); fight it as a full team for maximum safety.
  5. Field boss down: split rune collection and weapon evaluation; upgrade the best available weapon with any found Smithing Stones.
  6. Second Rune Arch hunt: one player checks a secondary church or ruin location while others collect remaining camp loot.
  7. Converge 5 minutes before night: move toward Night Boss arena area; activate any grace sites found along the route for flask restock.

Tips

  • Sprint at all times during the day phase unless actively fighting; every second of traversal time is a second not killing enemies.
  • Golden Rune items (consumables that grant runes on use) should be used immediately when found — hoarding them across a phase provides no benefit.
  • If a team member finds a Rune Arch, mark it on the map so the full team can use it before moving on.

Day 2 and Day 3 Rune Priorities

  • Day 2: Target the two largest field bosses visible on the map; they drop the most runes and best weapons of any Day 2 activity.
  • Day 2: Revisit any churches not reached on Day 1 for additional Rune Arch uses.
  • Day 2: Use all Golden Rune consumables found in Day 1 immediately at Day 2 start for instant rune boost.
  • Day 3: Only engage enemies that are directly on the path to the Nightlord arena; do not waste time on camp clearing unless severely underleveled.
  • Day 3: Prioritize any grace site or church on the route to the Nightlord for flask restock before the final fight.
  • All days: If a teammate is downed while farming, weigh the revive time cost against the rune and time loss before committing to a rescue.

Frequently asked questions

Do rune levels persist after an Expedition?

No. Rune levels earned within an Expedition are reset when the Expedition ends, whether through success or failure. The roguelike design means each Expedition starts at level 1 regardless of how high you leveled in a previous run. Only account-level Nightfarer persistent progression carries between runs.

What is the maximum rune level in a single Expedition?

The theoretical maximum rune level achievable in a single Expedition is approximately 35–40, depending on how many rune sources (arches, field bosses, camps) the team clears and whether the map spawns a high density of churches. Most practical Expeditions end with the team at level 26–32 before the Nightlord fight.

Do all three players share rune gains?

Yes. When any player in the team kills an enemy or activates a Rune Arch, all players in the Expedition receive the rune reward simultaneously regardless of proximity. This makes splitting up during the day phase highly efficient — both teams benefit from both groups' kills.

What happens to unspent runes if a Nightfarer dies?

Unlike Elden Ring, Nightreign does not have a rune loss mechanic on death. Runes collected are accumulated as level progress and cannot be lost. Dying only costs time (via revive downtime) and flask charges, not accumulated rune progress.

Are rune arches always in churches?

Churches are the most reliable rune arch locations, but arches can also appear in specific ruins structures and occasionally in fortified camp shrines. The minimap shows building icons for churches and ruin structures, allowing players to identify potential arch locations at a glance.
