How to Recruit Halsin — Two-Stage Process
Halsin's recruitment is a two-stage process that spans Acts 1 and 2. In Act 1, you learn that the First Druid of the Emerald Grove has been captured. Following the Goblin Camp questline, you will find Halsin imprisoned in the Worg Pens beneath the Shattered Sanctum — the large goblin fortress guarded by Minthara and other leaders. To free him, you must navigate or fight through the Shattered Sanctum and open his cage. Halsin can fight alongside you once free, and his Owlbear Wild Shape form is formidable even at these early levels.
After the Goblin Camp resolution, Halsin returns to the Druid Grove but does not join your camp immediately. He tells you he cannot leave while the curse affecting the Shadowlands remains. He joins your camp as a full companion only at the start of Act 2, after you proceed through the Mountain Pass or Underdark into the Shadow-Cursed Lands. From that point forward he is available as a full party member.
It is important not to kill Halsin accidentally during the Goblin Camp if he shapeshifts into a bear — the game presents him as an unnamed bear initially. Approach the bear pen carefully and look for dialogue options rather than attacking the bear. He also appears in a special event during the Celebration scene at camp in Act 1 if you've freed him from the Goblin Camp, but he doesn't fully join until Act 2.
Halsin's approval system rewards choices that protect nature, forests, animals, and peaceful resolution of conflict. He approves of sparing animals, healing the land's corruption, choosing non-violent options when available, and appreciating nature's beauty. He disapproves of cruelty to animals, unnecessary destruction of natural environments, and wanton violence against innocents. He is relatively easy to keep at high approval with a balanced or good-aligned playthrough.
Circle of Spores vs. Circle of Land — Which Subclass for Halsin?
Circle of Spores is the recommended subclass for Halsin because it fundamentally changes how his Wild Shape charges work. At level 2, Symbiotic Entity uses one Wild Shape charge to coat Halsin in protective spores: he gains 4 temporary HP per Druid level (up to 48 at level 12) and his melee or unarmed attacks deal an additional 1d6 necrotic damage per hit. This applies to Shillelagh staff attacks — meaning Symbiotic Entity turns Halsin into a WIS-scaling melee striker without needing to shapeshift at all. He retains full spellcasting (which Wild Shape normally prevents) while gaining meaningful melee offense.
Halo of Spores (also Circle of Spores level 2) deals 1d4 necrotic damage to a nearby creature as a reaction, no save required. It's a minor passive source of free damage triggered whenever an enemy moves nearby. At higher levels, the necrotic damage increases. The Circle of Spores passive Fungal Infestation at level 6 lets Halsin animate dead creatures (humanoids and beasts) that die within 9 m — they fight for him for 10 turns. In Act 2 and 3, this creates a small army of fungal zombie thralls without spending a spell slot.
Circle of Land is the alternative for players who want Halsin as a pure caster. Circle of Land selects a terrain type (Arctic, Forest, Desert, etc.) that grants extra spell options for that terrain. Forest is the most useful in BG3 — it grants Bark Skin (AC 16 regardless of armor, useful in medium armor gaps), Call Lightning (powerful channeled damage), and Spike Growth. Natural Recovery lets Halsin recover half his spell slots on a short rest once per long rest — comparable to a scaled-down Warlock in terms of sustain.
The tradeoff: Circle of Spores is the better choice if you want Halsin fighting in melee alongside your party, contributing both spells and weapon attacks in the same combat. Circle of Land is the better choice if you want Halsin entirely in the backline, concentrating on powerful zone-control spells (Spike Growth, Entangle, Call Lightning) while never entering melee range. Both are strong. This guide primarily covers Circle of Spores as the more unique build option that differs from other BG3 Druid guides.
Halsin Level 1–12 Progression Table
| Level | Class / Subclass | Key Unlock | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Druid 1 | Druid spell list, Wild Shape (CR 1/4 or lower), Shillelagh cantrip | Take Shillelagh immediately. It converts Halsin's staff attacks from STR-based to WIS-based, enabling him to invest only in WIS and CON without splitting stats. Wild Shape into a wolf or cat for free scouting and positioning. |
| 2 | Druid 2 — Circle of Spores | Symbiotic Entity (temp HP + 1d6 necrotic on hit), Halo of Spores (reaction necrotic damage), Wild Shape CR 1/4 | Symbiotic Entity is the build's core feature: activate it instead of Wild Shape to gain up to 24 temporary HP (at level 6) and deal 1d6 extra necrotic on every Shillelagh hit — while still casting spells. |
| 3 | Druid 3 | 2nd-level spells: Spike Growth, Flaming Sphere, Hold Person, Misty Step | Spike Growth is the highest-value spell unlock of early BG3: a 6 m radius zone that deals 2d4 piercing per 1.5 m of movement. Enemies forced into or through it take massive damage. Keep it up every fight. |
| 4 | Druid 4 | War Caster feat, 2nd-level spell slots expand, Wild Shape CR 1/2 | War Caster gives Advantage on all Concentration saves — critical for maintaining Spike Growth, Entangle, or Call Lightning when Halsin takes hits in melee with Symbiotic Entity active. |
| 5 | Druid 5 | 3rd-level spells: Sleet Storm, Call Lightning, Erupting Earth, Conjure Animals | Call Lightning is the payoff for reaching level 5. It deals 3d10 lightning damage per action for 10 turns (Concentration). Each lightning strike is a separate action, meaning Halsin hits once per turn for 3d10 with no spell slot cost after initial casting. Over long fights, this averages 55–165 damage over 10 turns from one 3rd-level slot. |
| 6 | Druid 6 | Fungal Infestation (animate dead humanoids/beasts on kill, 10 turns), Wild Shape CR 2 | Free zombie thralls from killed enemies — no spell slot cost. In fights with many enemies, Halsin can accumulate 2–3 animated corpses fighting on his behalf by mid-combat. |
| 7 | Druid 7 | 4th-level spells: Polymorph, Blight, Confusion, Giant Insect | Polymorph neutralizes single dangerous targets for the entire fight (turns them into sheep — they have 15 HP and are harmless). Giant Insect (Conjure 8 giant wasps) creates additional bodies for battlefield control. Both are high-value Concentration investments. |
| 8 | Druid 8 | ASI WIS +2 (to 19), Wild Shape CR 3 (Owlbear!) | Raising WIS to 19 improves spell save DC by 1 and Shillelagh attack bonus by 1. Wild Shape CR 3 unlocks the Owlbear form — the most powerful Wild Shape in BG3's base game, with a special Stunning Screech ability and massive physical stats. |
| 9 | Druid 9 | 5th-level spells: Conjure Elemental, Insect Plague, Wall of Stone | Conjure Elemental summons a permanent elemental ally until it or Halsin drops. Earth Elementals have excellent Tremorsense and immunity to non-magical damage. Insect Plague creates a 6 m radius damaging zone — stacks with Spike Growth for layered area denial. |
| 10 | Druid 10 | Spreading Spores (Spores Zone Bonus Action upgrade), Beast Spells (cast spells in Wild Shape) | Beast Spells allows Halsin to cast spells while in Wild Shape — a rare and powerful ability. He can now Shapeshift into an Owlbear AND maintain Call Lightning simultaneously. Spreading Spores lets him move Halo of Spores to a spot on the battlefield as a Bonus Action. |
| 11 | Druid 11 | 6th-level spells: Heal, Sunbeam, Transport via Plants | Heal (6th-level) restores 70 HP to a target instantly — the most efficient single healing action in the game. Sunbeam deals 6d8 radiant per action for 10 turns and blinds targets who fail their save. |
| 12 | Druid 12 | Feat: ASI WIS to 20 or Resilient CON | Capping WIS at 20 brings his spell save DC to 18 (15 base + 5 WIS + 2 Potent Robe from Act 3 items if applicable) — difficult for most enemies to resist. Resilient CON instead gives near-guaranteed Concentration saves even without Advantage from War Caster. |
Recommended Starting Stats After Respec
| Stat | Recommended Value | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Wisdom (WIS) | 17 | Controls spell save DC, Shillelagh attack and damage bonus, and Symbiotic Entity max temp HP. Highest priority stat. Push to 18 with Hag Hair in Act 1 if available. |
| Constitution (CON) | 16 | Provides HP and Concentration save reliability. A Druid who loses Concentration on Spike Growth or Call Lightning wastes the spell slot and action used to cast it. |
| Dexterity (DEX) | 14 | Contributes to Unarmored Defense and initiative. Druids wear medium armor (non-metal) or robes — 14 DEX caps medium armor DEX bonus for best AC without wearing heavy armor. |
| Strength (STR) | 8 | Dump stat when using Shillelagh — the cantrip replaces STR with WIS on staff attacks, making STR irrelevant for melee. |
| Intelligence (INT) | 10 | Modest investment for some lore and Arcana checks. Not mechanically critical. |
| Charisma (CHA) | 8 | Dump stat. Halsin's social checks rely on WIS (Insight, Perception) and his dialogue uses unique Druid/nature options rather than CHA-based persuasion heavily. |
Feat Choices at Levels 4, 8, and 12
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 — Primary Choice | War Caster | Grants Advantage on CON saves to maintain Concentration — Halsin's most important defensive protection. His highest-value spells (Spike Growth, Call Lightning, Entangle, Polymorph) are all Concentration. Losing Concentration during a fight is a catastrophic action economy loss. Additionally, War Caster allows casting Shillelagh as an Opportunity Attack reaction (a 1d8 + WIS melee hit as a reaction). |
| Level 4 — Alternative | Resilient CON | If CON is at 15 (odd number), Resilient CON adds +1 CON (to 16) and grants CON save proficiency. At CON 16 with proficiency, Halsin's Concentration save vs. common damage (DC 10 or half damage if higher) becomes very reliable even without War Caster's Advantage. Take this over War Caster only if you want guaranteed Concentration from a single feat source. |
| Level 8 — Primary Choice | ASI Wisdom +2 | Raises WIS from 17 to 19 (or 18 to 20 if Hag Hair was used). Every +1 WIS improves spell save DC, Shillelagh attack rolls, and Symbiotic Entity's temp HP cap. The most consistent improvement across all of Halsin's functions. Also pushes WIS modifier from +3 to +4, increasing Shillelagh damage by 1 per hit. |
| Level 12 — Option A | ASI Wisdom +2 (to 20) | Capping WIS at 20 achieves spell save DC 17 (base) — plus gear bonuses from Potent Robe and Markoheshkir can push it to 19 or higher, which very few enemies can reliably beat. The cap maximizes every aspect of Halsin's build simultaneously. |
| Level 12 — Option B | Resilient CON (if not taken at level 4) | CON save proficiency near-guarantees Concentration maintenance even under sustained pressure. Combine with War Caster's Advantage for a double-layer protection system. Very effective on Tactician difficulty where enemies deal high damage more frequently. |
| Situational Alternative | Dual Wielder | Only for exotic hybrid builds where Halsin uses a shield and a second weapon. Not recommended for the main Shillelagh staff build. The staff should always be Halsin's primary weapon for both Shillelagh conversion and arcane focus use. |
Act 1 Equipment (Planning) — Halsin Joins in Act 2, Plan Ahead
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Note | Halsin joins in Act 2 — gather his gear during Act 1 exploration | Halsin does not join your active party until Act 2. However, you can acquire gear in Act 1 that becomes his best-in-slot options for the early Act 2 period. Have a party member hold these items until Halsin joins. |
| Weapon / Focus | Staff of Arcane Blessing | Sold by Nessa at the Emerald Grove. Grants Bless once per long rest — Bless adds 1d4 to all attack rolls and saving throws for three allies including Halsin. A consistent party-wide buff from a staff he uses as a focus. |
| Armor | Armour of Moonbasking | Found in the Underdark (Sussur tree area) or occasionally in chests near the Goblin Camp. A Druid-wearable hide armor with excellent properties: grants the wearer a bonus to Concentration saves and a minor regeneration effect. Non-metal, which is critical — Druids refuse to wear metal armor in BG3. |
| Helmet | Circlet of Blasting | Found in the Underdark via merchants or chests. Grants Scorching Ray once per long rest — adds an optional fire damage ranged option to Halsin's toolkit if he needs to attack at range without spending a Druid spell slot. |
| Gloves | Gloves of the Growling Underdog | Found in the Shattered Sanctum (Goblin Camp). While surrounded by two or more enemies, Halsin gains Advantage on melee attacks — synergizes with his Circle of Spores melee role when enemies close in around him. |
| Boots | Boots of Striding | Prevents knockdown and forced movement — critical for a Concentration caster who needs to maintain standing position. Found in the Blighted Village or Goblin Camp area. |
| Ring 1 | Ring of Protection | Sold by Nessa at the Druid Grove. +1 AC and saving throws — applies to all Concentration saves and general defense. |
| Ring 2 | Crusher's Ring | Found on the goblin named Crusher in the Goblin Camp. +3 m movement speed. Helps Halsin close to melee when Symbiotic Entity is active. |
Act 2 Equipment — Shadow-Cursed Lands
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon / Focus | Pale Oak or continue Staff of Arcane Blessing | Pale Oak is obtainable via quests in Act 2 — it's a Druid-specific staff that grants additional uses of Wild Shape. For Circle of Spores, Wild Shape charges power Symbiotic Entity, so additional charges extend the number of fights where Halsin can maintain his melee buff without a long rest. |
| Armor | Luminous Armour | Found in the Gauntlet of Shar or through Nightsong questline. Applies Radiating Orb (stacking attack roll penalty) to targets hit by your spells. Halsin's Call Lightning applies one stack per lightning strike — after a few turns, the target has significant attack penalties that protect the whole party. |
| Helmet | Circlet of Blasting (carry from Act 1) | Keep this until Act 3. The Scorching Ray use is modest but the circlet's other properties keep it competitive through Act 2. |
| Gloves | Floodgate Gloves | Found in the Gauntlet of Shar. Wet condition applied to targets hit allows Halsin's Call Lightning to deal additional damage, since lightning damage to Wet targets deals double (in BG3, the Wet condition causes vulnerability to lightning and cold damage). |
| Amulet | Periapt of Wound Closure | Found in the Gauntlet or purchased. Doubles HP recovery from short-rest Hit Dice. Excellent for a melee-Druid who takes hits during Symbiotic Entity combat. |
| Ring 1 | Strange Conduit Ring | Found in the Gauntlet of Shar. While concentrating, adds 1d4 psychic damage per melee hit. Halsin concentrates on a spell nearly every fight, so this is always active during his Symbiotic Entity melee turns — free extra damage. |
| Ring 2 | Ring of Protection (carry from Act 1) | Still a strong defensive piece through Act 2. No ring upgrade clearly outperforms it until Act 3. |
| Cloak | Cloak of Protection (carry from Act 1) | Maintain the +1 AC and saving throw bonus. No significant cloak upgrade in Act 2. |
| Boots | Boots of Striding (carry from Act 1) | Knockdown immunity remains essential for a melee caster who maintains Concentration in close quarters. |
Act 3 Equipment — Best-in-Slot for Halsin
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon / Focus | Markoheshkir | Found in Ramazith's Tower via a puzzle encounter in Act 3 Baldur's Gate. The best arcane focus in the game. Grants Kereska's Favour (cast any spell up to 6th level for free once per long rest), +1 to all spell save DCs, and elemental resistance chosen each long rest. For Halsin, Kereska's Favour means a free Conjure Elemental, Heal, or Sunbeam once per day. |
| Armor | Potent Robe | Purchased from various vendors in Baldur's Gate during Act 3 (notably the robe merchant near Sorcerous Sundries). Halsin's Cantrips deal damage equal to his WIS modifier (the Potent modifier from the full Druid class feature) — with WIS 20, Shillelagh deals an extra +5 damage. The robe also adds +1 to spell save DC, stacking with Markoheshkir. Critical item for Circle of Spores Halsin. |
| Helmet | Helmet of Arcane Acuity | Purchased in Baldur's Gate Act 3 shops. Gain +2 to spell save DC for 3 turns when hitting with a spell attack. Halsin's Shillelagh counts as a melee spell attack — every hit builds up the Arcane Acuity stacks, rapidly raising his spell save DC to nearly 20. Enemies start reliably failing saves against Entangle, Hold Person, and Spike Growth. |
| Gloves | Gloves of Dexterity | Found in Act 3. Sets DEX to 18, freeing the DEX stats for reallocation. After getting these, respec to remove points from DEX and put them into WIS or CON instead. |
| Amulet | Spellcrux Amulet | Found at the end of the Moonrise Towers sequence or available in Act 3. Restores one expended spell slot per long rest as a free action. For Halsin, this means recovering a 5th-level slot (Conjure Elemental or Insect Plague) mid-fight once per day. |
| Ring 1 | Ring of Spellcasting | Purchased from Act 3 merchants. +1 to spell save DC. Combined with Markoheshkir and Helmet of Arcane Acuity, Halsin's effective spell save DC after a few hits can reach 18 or above without any base CHA or INT investment. |
| Ring 2 | Strange Conduit Ring (carry from Act 2) | Remains strong in Act 3 — Halsin always concentrates on at least one spell, and the 1d4 psychic per melee hit continues to add up across a full fight. |
| Cloak | Cloak of the Weave (Helsik, Devil's Fee) | Sold by Helsik in Act 3. Grants +2 to spell attack rolls and +2 to spell save DC. Stacks with all other bonuses for an enormous combined total. The two-weapon attack bonus also benefits Shillelagh's spell attack roll. |
| Boots | Boots of Persistence | Grants Freedom of Movement and immunity to difficult terrain slow. Halsin often charges into melee — removing Restrained and difficult terrain effects keeps him mobile without burning spell slots. |
Wild Shape Guide — When to Shapeshift and When Not To
The fundamental tension of Circle of Spores Halsin is that Wild Shape charges power Symbiotic Entity. Using Wild Shape to transform into an animal directly competes with activating Symbiotic Entity. At level 2, Halsin has 2 Wild Shape charges (recovering on short rest). Using one for Symbiotic Entity leaves one for an actual Wild Shape transformation — use this remaining charge for scouting, traversal puzzles (Rat form to fit in tight spaces, Badger form to dig), or a last-resort option if Halsin goes down and you need a safe form to hide in.
The Bear Wild Shape form is the highest-HP option in early BG3 — at level 2, a bear has 34 HP, which can absorb damage that would kill Halsin outright. If Halsin is at low HP and Symbiotic Entity has expired, transforming into a bear is an emergency defensive measure that gives him effectively a second health pool. In BG3, dropping to 0 HP in Wild Shape ends the form but Halsin returns with his original HP total (whatever he had before transforming).
The Owlbear Wild Shape at level 8 is Halsin's premium combat Wild Shape. The Owlbear has an exceptional HP pool and a Stunning Screech ability that can incapacitate multiple nearby enemies on a failed CON save. If you want Halsin to actually shapeshift and fight in Wild Shape, save Owlbear for important encounters. Remember that Beast Spells (Circle of Spores level 10) lets him cast spells while in Wild Shape — meaning he can Owlbear-form AND cast Call Lightning simultaneously in the late game.
For Circle of Land builds (alternative path), Wild Shape remains a utility and exploration tool. The focus is fully on spellcasting — Wild Shape is used once per combat at most, to scout or absorb damage, while Halsin's action economy goes entirely into spells.
Best Spell Combinations and Tactics
Spike Growth + Forced Movement: This is Halsin's most reliable early-game combination. Cast Spike Growth on a chokepoint or between enemies and a desired destination. Then use Shove, Thunderwave (AoE knockback), Repelling Blast (if a Wyll is in the party), or other push effects to force enemies to move through the spikes. Each 1.5 m moved through the spikes deals 2d4 piercing damage. Forcing an enemy to walk 6 m through Spike Growth deals 8d4 piercing — an average of 20 damage with no attack roll required. Multiple enemies can be pushed through the same zone simultaneously.
Call Lightning (levels 5+): The most efficient damage spell in Halsin's kit by raw output-per-slot ratio. A single 3rd-level spell slot summons a lightning storm that he can call down each turn for 3d10 lightning damage (average 16.5) per action for up to 10 turns — without spending additional slots. Over 4 turns, this totals 66 average damage from a single 3rd-level slot. The key is maintaining Concentration and being in range. Wet targets (from Create Water, Grease interacting with lightning, or rain effects in Act 2) take double lightning damage. Call Lightning + a wet surface is Halsin's highest single-target damage sequence.
Conjure Animals + positioning: At level 5, Conjure Animals (available on the base Druid list) summons 2d6 level-appropriate creatures. In BG3, Conjure Animals summons a set number of specific creatures based on the CR level selected — choosing CR 1/4 gives 8 wolves, which can grapple and prone enemies on every successful attack (wolves knock prone on hit). Eight wolves prone multiple enemies simultaneously, giving all your melee allies Advantage against them for free. The action economy of 8 free attacks per turn is staggering at level 5.
Halsin as Heal bot in emergencies: Even with a full offense/control build, Halsin has access to the best healing spells in the game. Healing Word (bonus action, range 18 m, heals 1d4 + WIS) can be thrown as a free Bonus Action during any turn. Mass Cure Wounds (5th-level) heals every nearby ally for 3d8 + WIS (average 24 HP each) in one action. In fights where your party takes heavy damage, Halsin can pivot from control to healing without losing the fight. Don't forget these options — they're particularly valuable if Shadowheart goes down.
Party Synergy — Who Pairs Best with Halsin
Halsin's Spike Growth pairs spectacularly with Wyll's Repelling Blast. Wyll can push enemies through the Spike Growth zone from a distance, applying 2d4 damage per 1.5 m of forced movement without Wyll needing to be near the zone. The combination requires no additional setup and functions every round that both companions are active. This two-companion team can lock down entire sections of a battlefield — enemies that try to move risk Spike Growth, and enemies that stay put get blasted by Wyll.
Shadowheart as the secondary healer pairs excellently with Halsin because she can take over healing duties in easier fights, allowing Halsin to focus on control and damage. Spirit Guardians (Shadowheart's key concentration spell) and Spike Growth (Halsin's key control spell) both require Concentration — only one can be active at a time per caster. This means they cover different engagement styles rather than competing: Shadowheart handles dense enemy clusters with Spirit Guardians, Halsin handles spread engagements or ranged enemy groups with Spike Growth and Call Lightning.
Karlach or Lae'zel in the frontline benefit from Halsin's Conjure Animals wolves, which prone targets. Once targets are prone (from wolf pack attacks), every melee attack within 1.5 m has Advantage — Karlach's Reckless Attack already provides Advantage, but Lae'zel doesn't have that luxury without a maneuver. Halsin's prone-applying animals effectively give Lae'zel constant Advantage on all melee attacks, dramatically increasing her DPS and GWM effectiveness.
Avoid running Halsin alongside a second Concentration-heavy caster like Gale, because they'll compete for spell slot types and Concentration slots. Two Druids or a Druid/Sorcerer both wanting to concentrate on different battlefield control spells creates action economy conflicts. Halsin fills his best role alongside one melee frontliner, one melee-damage dealer, and one ranged damage dealer — he provides the battlefield control layer that lets the others excel.
Common Mistakes to Avoid with Halsin
- Using Wild Shape for combat instead of Symbiotic Entity: In Circle of Spores, Wild Shape charges are best spent on Symbiotic Entity (which maintains full spellcasting while adding melee damage). Shapeshifting into an animal for combat prevents Halsin from casting spells entirely (until Beast Spells at level 10) and wastes the unique Spores synergy. Save Wild Shape transformations for scouting, traversal, or emergencies.
- Dropping Concentration by stepping into melee without War Caster: Halsin's most powerful spells (Spike Growth, Call Lightning, Entangle) require Concentration. If he wades into melee without War Caster's Concentration save Advantage, every hit he takes risks ending the spell. Take War Caster before going melee with Symbiotic Entity active — or stay ranged when concentrating on high-value spells.
- Ignoring the Wet + Lightning synergy: In BG3, creatures with the Wet condition are Vulnerable to lightning and cold damage. Wet can be applied with Create Water, Grease in rain, or naturally in wet environments. Halsin's Call Lightning deals double damage to Wet targets — a Wet target hit by Call Lightning takes 6d10 (average 33) instead of 3d10 (average 16.5) per lightning strike. Set up Wet before calling lightning.
- Spending high-level spell slots on direct damage when control works better: Halsin's 4th and 5th-level slots are best spent on summon spells (Conjure Elemental) or Concentration crowd control (Polymorph, Insect Plague). Casting a 4th-level Blight for 8d8 (average 36) damage on one target is far less efficient than Polymorphing a dangerous enemy into a harmless sheep for the entire fight — effectively removing 100+ HP and all abilities from a threat with one slot.
- Forgetting that Druids cannot wear metal armor: Druids in BG3 physically refuse to equip metal armor pieces, even if they're statistically better. Always check that armor pieces you buy for Halsin are labeled Hide, Leather, or Padded — not Chain, Scale, or Plate. Non-metal medium armor maxes out at around AC 14–15 without magical bonuses, which is why DEX 14 and Unarmored Defense investments matter for Halsin.
- Not short resting to replenish Wild Shape and recover Circle of Land spell slots: Halsin's Wild Shape charges recover on short rest (2 per short rest). After using Symbiotic Entity, a short rest fully replenishes Wild Shape charges so he can activate it again next fight. Circle of Land's Natural Recovery also restores half his slots on a short rest once per long rest. Short resting between every two significant encounters maximizes Halsin's sustained power across a dungeon day.
- Overlooking Healing Word in critical moments: Healing Word (Bonus Action, range 18 m) is the most efficient emergency healing action in BG3 — it uses a Bonus Action rather than a full Action, meaning Halsin can heal a downed companion AND still attack or cast a control spell on the same turn. Many players forget this option and watch their companion bleed out while Halsin wastes his Action casting Cure Wounds at close range instead.
- Skipping the rescue in Act 1 or killing the bear: Halsin appears as an unnamed bear in the Worg Pens of the Goblin Camp's Shattered Sanctum. If you attack all bears indiscriminately, you may kill Halsin before discovering his identity. Always approach unidentified animals in combat areas with dialogue first — the bear's unique appearance (larger than normal bears, golden-furred) and the contextual setting (a cage near goblins) should hint at significance.
Circle of Spores vs. Circle of Land — Detailed Comparison
| Feature | Circle of Spores | Circle of Land (Forest) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Melee-caster hybrid: Symbiotic Entity for frontline damage + spells | Pure caster: full backline spell control and damage |
| Wild Shape Use | Wild Shape charges power Symbiotic Entity — spending charges on shapeshifting wastes the subclass | Wild Shape used for exploration, scouting, emergency absorption; not core to subclass |
| Extra Spell Access | Chill Touch, Blindness/Deafness, Gaseous Form, Blight, Cloudkill — necrotic/poison focus | Barkskin, Spike Growth, Sleet Storm, Freedom of Movement, Tree Stride — nature/terrain control focus |
| Short Rest Recovery | Wild Shape charges recover on short rest — Symbiotic Entity renewable every 2 short rests | Natural Recovery: restore half spell slots on short rest once per long rest — more slots overall per day |
| Damage Type | Necrotic damage (Symbiotic Entity hits, Halo of Spores) — rarely resisted | Lightning (Call Lightning), cold (Sleet Storm), fire (Fireball via land) — varies by terrain choice |
| Difficulty | Moderate — managing Symbiotic Entity, Concentration, and melee positioning simultaneously | Low — pure caster is simpler; cast spells, stay back, avoid melee |
Verdict: Choose Circle of Spores if you want Halsin as an active participant in melee while maintaining spellcasting — the most unique and interesting Druid playstyle. Choose Circle of Land if you prefer a simpler, purely defensive backline caster that maximizes spell slots and terrain control without melee complexity.
Frequently asked questions
When does Halsin actually join my party in BG3?
Halsin becomes a full party companion at the start of Act 2. In Act 1, you can rescue him from the Goblin Camp's Worg Pens, and he will return to the Emerald Grove and appear at your camp for conversations. However, he explicitly tells you he cannot leave to join your adventure until the shadow curse affecting the Shadowlands is addressed. Once you enter the Mountain Pass (or Underdark) and proceed into Act 2's Shadow-Cursed Lands, Halsin joins your camp as a full companion and can be added to your active party.
What is Symbiotic Entity and how does it work?
Symbiotic Entity is the Circle of Spores level 2 feature. Using a Wild Shape charge as a Bonus Action (rather than shapeshifting into an animal), Halsin coats himself in spores: he gains temporary HP equal to 4 × Druid level, and his melee attacks deal an additional 1d6 necrotic damage per hit. Crucially, he does NOT shapeshift — he retains his normal form and can continue casting spells normally. Symbiotic Entity lasts 10 minutes (effectively the entire combat). It is Halsin's highest-value Bonus Action use in virtually every combat encounter.
Can Halsin cast spells while in Wild Shape?
Normally, no — transforming into an animal form prevents spellcasting. However, Circle of Spores level 10 grants Beast Spells, which allows Halsin to cast any Druid spell while in Wild Shape. This means he can be in Owlbear form (huge HP and powerful claw attacks) AND continue casting Call Lightning or Entangle. Beast Spells is unlocked late (level 10) and is a major power spike for any Druid who uses Wild Shape for combat.
Is Halsin good for healing in BG3?
Yes, Halsin is an excellent emergency healer even on a damage/control build. His Druid spell list includes Healing Word (efficient Bonus Action healing at range), Mass Cure Wounds (heals all nearby allies for large amounts in one action), and Heal (6th-level, restores 70 HP instantly). He shouldn't be relied upon as the party's primary healer — that role suits Shadowheart better with her Cleric features. But Halsin can pivot to healing duty in any combat without any build changes, which is one of the strongest qualities of the Druid class.
What is the best Wild Shape form for Halsin to use in combat?
For early Act 2 combat (before level 8), the Brown Bear form has the best HP and paw attacks available. At level 8, unlocking CR 3 Wild Shapes opens the Owlbear — the best combat Wild Shape in BG3. The Owlbear has exceptional HP, a powerful Beak attack, and a Stunning Screech ability that stuns nearby enemies on a failed CON save. After level 10 (Beast Spells), Owlbear form while maintaining Call Lightning is Halsin's peak combat Wild Shape sequence.
Should I respec Halsin when he joins in Act 2?
Yes, a Withers respec is strongly recommended when Halsin joins in Act 2. His default stat distribution may not reflect the optimal WIS 17, CON 16, DEX 14 spread. More importantly, a respec lets you confirm his subclass as Circle of Spores at level 2 and ensure his cantrip selection includes Shillelagh and Guidance. The respec costs 100 gold and is available from Withers in your camp.
What does Halsin's Shadow Curse questline involve in Act 2?
Halsin's Act 2 quest centers on Thaniel, a nature spirit whose separation from his lost half has created the Shadow Curse afflicting the region. You need to enter a dangerous rift to find Thaniel's lost piece — a child named Oliver — and reunite the two halves. Oliver is found in a specific location in the Shadow-Cursed Lands and must be convinced or defeated in a puzzle-like encounter. Completing the Thaniel questline is required for Halsin's full companion status and affects the resolution of Act 2's shadow curse storyline.
Can Halsin be romanced, and does it affect his build?
Yes, Halsin can be romanced in Act 3 after his Act 2 questline is completed and he has high enough approval. The romance choices do not affect his combat stats or build — they are purely story decisions. However, pursuing his romance requires speaking with him at camp regularly throughout Acts 2 and 3 and maintaining high approval (protect nature, show kindness to animals, pursue peaceful resolution). His romance arc has a satisfying conclusion that ties into the resolution of the shadow curse.
