Melee Weapons — Best Options by Damage Type

Balduran's Giantslayer is the undisputed best melee weapon in BG3 for STR-based builds. It's a +3 greatsword that adds your STR modifier to damage a second time — at STR 20, that's an additional +5 per swing. Against Large and Huge creatures (giants, dragons, certain demons), it also grants Advantage on attack rolls. With Great Weapon Master active, you're dealing 2d6 + STR + STR (double) + 10 (GWM) per hit. Combined with Action Surge, this produces some of the game's highest-burst turns.

For finesse builds (Rogue, Ranger, some Paladin variants), Bloodthirst is the best single-hand weapon in Act 3. It crits on 19–20 (doubled crit range), and on a crit it applies the Hamstring Shot effect preventing the target from moving — crucial for locking down high-mobility bosses. The companion dagger Knife of the Undermountain King provides similar crit expansion at 18–20.

Nyrulna is the best spear for any build that can use it. It creates a lightning explosion on a thrown attack and returns to your hand, making it both a melee and ranged weapon. It grants +3 to all attacks and damage. Particularly strong on a Barbarian (who can rage-throw consistently) or a Champion Fighter looking to expand their crit fishing.

Armor & Headgear — Priority Acquisitions

Helldusk Armor is the best heavy armor in the game and is found in Raphael's House of Hope in Act 3. Acquiring it requires either defeating Raphael (difficult but doable) or using creative solutions. The armor requires no STR check in BG3 (unlike tabletop), grants proficiency in itself, applies Burning to any attacker who hits you, allows a 3rd-level Fly spell once per long rest, and has a Flame Shield reaction property. It's worth the dangerous fight to obtain.

For non-heavy armor classes, the Armour of the Sporekeeper (Myconid colony questline reward) is excellent for Druids — it lets you cast Spore Cloud aura while in Wild Shape, something normally impossible. The Armour of Persistence (Stormshore Tabernacle) applies Blur and Bless simultaneously as a passive whenever you take a short rest — an extremely powerful passive combination.

Birthright is the most important helmet in the game for CHA-based classes. It raises CHA by +2, which for a Paladin with 18 CHA becomes 20, adding +5 to Aura of Protection saves rather than +4. For Sorcerers, it directly increases spell save DC. It's sold at Sorcerous Sundries and is one of the first purchases every CHA caster should make upon reaching Act 3.

Rings & Accessories — Don't Miss These

  • Amulet of Greater Health (CON 23): One of the most powerful items in the game for concentration-dependent casters. At CON 23, your CON save modifier is +6 — concentration checks become virtually automatic even without War Caster feat. Found in Cazador's dungeon or House of Hope.
  • Ring of Free Action: Prevents the Slow and Restrained conditions — significant against enemies that apply these. Found from Hag-related content and certain chest areas in Act 3's sewers.
  • Caustic Band (continues from Act 2): Applies acid to all hits — the acid stack effect stacks with poison, fire, and other riders for enormous damage-on-hit builds.
  • Gloves of Dexterity: Sets DEX to 18 — excellent for any DEX-based character who doesn't have the stat budget to hit 18 naturally. Found at specific merchants in Lower City.
  • Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength: Sets STR to 23 — renders all STR Ability Score Improvement feats redundant. Let's you put all your ASI feats toward Great Weapon Master, Polearm Master, and War Caster instead. Sold at Sorcerous Sundries.
  • Surgeon's Subjugation Amulet: Lets you cast Hold Monster once per long rest as a free action — the most powerful single-target paralyze in the game as a free resource.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Balduran's Giantslayer found in Act 3?

Balduran's Giantslayer is found in the Counting House bank vault in Act 3's Lower City, or alternatively can be obtained during the Iron Throne prison rescue sequence. The Counting House route involves passing Perception checks and a lockpicking challenge. It's worth acquiring as early as possible in Act 3 since it significantly boosts any STR-based melee build.

How do I get the Helldusk Armor from Raphael?

The Helldusk Armor is in the House of Hope, Raphael's layer of the hells. You access it through a specific portal in the Lower City. You can attempt to steal items from the House of Hope without fighting Raphael by avoiding detection, or fight Raphael himself (one of the hardest optional bosses). You can also obtain it by completing the Hope's Prison sidequest without triggering Raphael's fight. Fighting Raphael gives additional rewards but isn't required for the armor.

Is the Amulet of Greater Health worth getting for non-casters?

For non-casters it's less impactful since they don't rely on concentration saves, but CON 23 still gives enormous HP and excellent CON saves for Indomitable rerolls. The amulet competes with other powerful amulet options (Surgeon's Subjugation, Amulet of the Harpers). For pure martial classes, the amulet's slot is often better used for something that directly boosts damage or defensive options.

What is the best ring setup in Act 3?

The optimal ring setup varies by class. For casters: Risky Ring + Arcane Synergy ring (for Arcane Acuity stacks). For melee: Caustic Band + Ring of Free Action. For support: Ring of Free Action + Strange Conduit Ring. One universally strong ring is the Callous Glow Ring (adds radiant damage to all attacks in bright light) — works on any character using the Light cantrip or adjacent lighting effects.

Can I get all Act 3 items in a single playthrough?

Not all of them — some items are locked behind mutually exclusive questline choices (especially Shadowheart's questline which has major branching outcomes). However, most weapons, armor, and accessories are obtainable without major questline locks. The Helldusk Armor, Balduran's Giantslayer, Birthright, and Gontr Mael can all be obtained in the same playthrough with careful planning.
