Warframe New Player Progression Guide — First 50 Hours Roadmap

The First Hour — What to Prioritize

Warframe overwhelms most new players with dozens of systems introduced simultaneously. The key is to follow the main quest path and resist the urge to explore every system immediately. In your first session: complete Vor's Prize (the tutorial quest), unlock your starting Warframe and Sentinel, and begin progressing the Star Chart from Mercury.

Your starting Warframe choice (Excalibur, Volt, or Mag) matters less than many guides suggest — all three are viable, and you will acquire many more Warframes over time. Excalibur is generally recommended for beginners due to his straightforward kit and strong base stats, but trust your instincts.

The most important early action is understanding the mod system. Before spending resources, read how capacity, polarity slots, and Orokin Reactors work (see our Mod System Guide). Misunderstanding mods leads to inefficient investments that cost Endo and Credits to undo.

Quest Priority Order

  1. Vor's Prize (Tutorial) — Complete first. Introduces all core systems and rewards starter gear.
  2. Archwing — Unlocks Archwing combat. Required for Junctions and later planet progressions.
  3. Stolen Dreams + The Archwing — Complete both to continue the story chain.
  4. The Second Dream — Most important quest in the game. Reveals the Operator and unlocks Focus schools, Relics, and Void Fissures. Do not skip this.
  5. The War Within — Follows The Second Dream. Unlocks Kuva, Operator combat abilities, and the Kuva Lich system.
  6. The Sacrifice — Unlocks Umbra Excalibur and Umbral mods. Completes the main story arc.
  7. Chains of Harrow, Sands of Inaros, The Jordas Precept — Secondary quests that unlock additional Warframes (Harrow, Inaros, Atlas) via their quest rewards.
  8. The New War + Veilbreaker — Recent major story quests. Complete in order after The Sacrifice.

Mastery Rank Milestones That Matter

Mastery Rank (MR) is Warframe's overall account progression score. It increases as you level new Warframes, weapons, companions, and other equipment to their maximum rank. Higher MR unlocks new weapons (many require MR 5–15), higher daily Standing caps with factions, and access to the Sortie system at MR 5.

The most impactful MR milestones for new players: MR 2 unlocks better weapons in the Market. MR 5 unlocks Sorties (daily high-reward missions) and increases trading limits. MR 8 unlocks the Void Trader Baro Ki'Teer's full catalog (some items require MR 8+). MR 12 is the entry point most endgame squads informally expect.

Do not rush Mastery Rank for its own sake. Level new equipment naturally as you acquire it — trying to speed-level junk weapons wastes resources. Focus on leveling equipment you actually want to use, and MR will increase naturally.

First Forma — Where to Use It

Forma is a major investment (requires crafting time and materials). Your first few Forma should go on Warframes and weapons you plan to use for many hours, not items you are still evaluating. Ask yourself: 'Am I planning to use this for the next 20+ hours?' before committing a Forma.

For most new players, Excalibur or the second Warframe they enjoy is the right first Forma target. A Forma allows you to fit one more expensive mod at half cost, which meaningfully increases your build's power. Do not apply Forma to a weapon or frame you are unsure about.

Early game, prioritize building and ranking up equipment to acquire Mastery XP. Apply Forma only after you have clearly identified your primary Warframe and two weapons you consistently use.

Trading Basics for New Players

  • Trading requires Mastery Rank 2 and a Clan Dojo with a Trading Post. You can also trade at Maroo's Bazaar relay without a Clan.
  • Tradeable items include: Mods, Prime parts, Arcanes, Rivens, and Platinum. You cannot trade Credits, Endo, or most Warframe crafting resources.
  • The best way to earn Platinum through trading: sell Prime Warframe parts you obtain from Void Relics. Prime Neuroptics, Chassis, and Systems components are regularly needed by other players. Check Warframe Market to determine current prices before listing.
  • When buying: never buy items marked as 'unvaulted' (temporarily available) unless you need them immediately. Wait for permanent price drops. Common Aura mods sell for 5–20 Platinum from players and are much cheaper than buying from the Market for Platinum.
  • New players should avoid high-value trades (100+ Platinum per item) until they understand the market pricing. Start with small trades (10–50 Platinum) to learn the systems before making major purchases.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first in Warframe as a new player?

Complete Vor's Prize (tutorial), then progress the Star Chart planet by planet following Junction requirements. Prioritize main quests: The Second Dream unlocks the Operator and Focus system, which are critical for mid-game. At the same time, learn the mod system and begin leveling new weapons for Mastery Rank progress.

What Mastery Rank should I aim for as a new player?

MR 5 unlocks Sorties. MR 8 is a meaningful benchmark for endgame content access. MR 12 is where most experienced players consider a player 'not a beginner' for raid-style content. Level equipment naturally — MR increases on its own as you play.

When should I use my first Forma?

Use your first Forma on a Warframe you love and plan to use for at least 20+ more hours. Apply it to the mod slot hosting your most expensive mod (the one with the highest drain) to halve that cost. Do not Forma weapons or frames you are still evaluating.

Is it worth spending Platinum on resources or crafting slots?

Spend Platinum on Warframe and weapon slots first — these are the most impactful purchases. Use the rest for Orokin Reactors and Catalysts on frames/weapons you love. Avoid spending Platinum on resources (they are all farmable) or rush crafting (24-hour builds are standard and not worth skipping with Platinum).

Do I need to do the main quests in order?

Yes, main quests must be completed in order since each has quest prerequisites. The Archwing must precede The Jordas Precept; The Second Dream must precede The War Within. Check the Quest menu (Codex → Quests) to see your current available quests and their prerequisites.

What is the best Warframe for new players?

Excalibur is excellent for beginners — he is well-rounded, free (starter choice), and his abilities are straightforward. Rhino (farmable from Jackal on Venus) is another top pick for survivability. Once you find a playstyle you enjoy, look up which Warframe excels in that role. See our Best Warframes for Beginners guide.
