What Makes the Ashlands Different

The Ashlands is Valheim's seventh biome and the first one designed around a permanent hostile environment. The terrain is volcanic — cracked black stone, rivers of magma, falling ash, and surface temperatures hot enough that Fire Resistance Mead is the default buff rather than an emergency tool. Unlike previous biomes, the Ashlands actively reshapes the map: meteors fall, eruptions create new vents, and the southern ocean approach is patrolled by Serpents and ash storms.

The faction structure is also new. Where Mistlands had neutral Dvergr and hostile Seekers, the Ashlands has the Charred — undead warrior cultures organized into fortresses with archers, warriors, marksmen, and twitch-bell summoners. Charred enemies attack in coordinated patrols and respawn aggressively from fortress totems. Clearing a fortress is a multi-stage siege, not a roaming kill.

Plan Ashlands progression as a beachhead campaign. Build a fortified stone outpost on a high cliff at the biome edge, run portal networks to your main base, and treat every trip as a contested supply run. The biome's most valuable resources (Flametal, Charred Bones, Asksvin Hide, Morgen Hearts) are concentrated near enemy positions, so combat and gathering are inseparable.

Crossing the Southern Ocean Safely

The voyage to the Ashlands is its own combat encounter. The southern ocean carries ash storms that reduce visibility, increases Serpent spawn pressure, and includes drifting volcanic debris that can damage hulls. A standard Longboat will reach the biome but takes heavy damage on arrival. Most players upgrade to the Drakkar, the late-game longship that adds armor plating and improved cargo capacity.

Time the crossing for daytime departures and bring at least three teammates if possible — one to steer, one to handle Serpents with a Harpoon plus melee weapon, and one to manage repairs. Stock extra wood, Bronze nails (for hull repair), and a portal kit so you can drop a return portal on the Ashlands shore the moment you land.

Landing is the most dangerous moment of any Ashlands trip. Volture flocks circle most shorelines and Charred archer towers cover most cliff lines. Verdict: Triage by encounter pressure: clear Voltures first (they interrupt everything), then Charred archers (they pull the fight wider), then commit to Charred warriors with melee. Avoid Morgen until you have a fully upgraded Mistwalker or Flametal weapon, and never start a Morgen fight near a Charred fortress — the combined aggro is unwinnable.

Beachhead Build Order on Arrival

  1. Beach the Drakkar in a sheltered cove with one open exit lane — never bottle yourself into a single-direction extraction.
  2. Drop a portal immediately and pair it to your main base; do not push inland without confirming the portal works.
  3. Build a 4x4 stone foundation with a campfire, bed, workbench, and chest. Stone walls block Charred archers; wood walls do not.
  4. Add a Forge if you plan to repair gear on-site (recommended) — bring Bronze and Iron via portal since metals do not teleport.

Taming and Riding Asksvin

Asksvin are the Ashlands' large reptilian pack predators. They are fast, deal high physical damage, and respawn in open volcanic plains. Killing them yields Asksvin Hide (used for the Asksvin armor set) and Pots fragments. They can also be tamed: feed Asksvin Eggs or specific carrion drops from a safe distance, repeat across several feeds, and the Asksvin will eventually accept you as friendly. A tamed Asksvin can be saddled and ridden, providing the fastest non-magical land travel in the Ashlands.

Tame Asksvin near your beachhead, not deep in Charred territory — the taming process is slow and the Asksvin must remain in a peaceful zone between feeds. Build a small pen with stake walls plus one gate, drop the first feed inside, and chip away at trust over several real-time hours. Once tamed and mountable, an Asksvin can outrun most Ashlands enemies and lets you traverse the biome between fortresses without burning Eikthyr's Power.

Tamed Asksvin breed by being placed in the same area with adequate food. A small Asksvin ranch at your beachhead can supply hide, eggs, and replacement mounts for the entire Ashlands campaign. Do not site the ranch within Charred patrol range — even a tamed Asksvin will die to a Charred warrior group if left undefended.

Flametal Mining and Smelting

Flametal is the endgame metal of the Ashlands and replaces Black Metal as the highest-tier crafting resource. Surface veins glow red-orange against the black volcanic rock and are immediately recognizable — and immediately contested. Most Flametal sites are within line of sight of a Charred archer tower or near an Asksvin pack. Plan a mining trip as a combat trip: clear the area first, mine second, extract third.

Underground Flametal deposits sit inside volcanic caves and tunnels and yield more ore per node, but the escape routes are tight. Bring portal materials to drop a return portal as deep as you can safely place it, and never mine yourself into a corner without a tested retreat path. Magma rivers cut some tunnels — a Feather Cape glide saves runs more than once.

Smelting Flametal requires the standard Smelter (Black Forge era) plus Coal. Output rate is fine but the ore itself is heavy and does not teleport, so build a forward Smelter at your beachhead and process Flametal on-site. Carry finished Flametal bars back through a portal-free runner trip only when absolutely required — the bars also block portal use. Most veterans simply craft the Flametal weapon or armor at the beachhead Black Forge and teleport the finished gear home.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to finish the Mistlands before entering the Ashlands?

Yes, in practice. Carapace armor or Eitr-woven mage armor is the realistic minimum to survive prolonged Ashlands combat, and both come from the Mistlands. The Queen's Power is also extremely useful for Ashlands magic enemies. You can technically sail to the Ashlands earlier, but you will lose your gear repeatedly on Charred archer towers and Asksvin packs. Treat the Queen kill as the official gate before committing to an Ashlands campaign.

How do I survive the southern ocean crossing?

Use a Drakkar longship reinforced with Yggdrasil Wood plates, bring 3+ teammates if possible, depart at dawn, and pre-load wood and Bronze nails for hull repairs. Where is Flametal found and how do I get it back to base?

How dangerous is Morgen compared to other Ashlands enemies?

Morgen is the most dangerous non-boss enemy in the Ashlands. It has very high HP, sweeping melee, and a slam attack that destroys stone walls. Engaging Morgen with Carapace armor is risky; with anything less it is suicidal. Wait until you have Mistwalker or first Flametal weapons, Bonemass Power equipped, and a clear arena with no Charred patrols in range.
