Project Zomboid Long-Run Survival Hub — Traits, Skills, Base Building, Build 42 Roadmap

How a long-run PZ save actually progresses
Project Zomboid runs split into four phases. Days 1-7: scavenge a starter base, lock down a small house, learn basic combat. Days 7-30: skill-leveling phase — carpentry from reading + crafting, farming from planted seeds, cooking from prepared meals. Days 30+: medium-term base — vehicle, generator, water + power survival, food preservation. Long-term (day 60+): basement raids, helicopter event survival, winter food planning. Each phase has a different bottleneck.
The early-game survival guide covers Days 1-7. The skill leveling guides cover Days 7-30. The base building + generator + vehicle + winter guides cover Day 30+. The Build 42 changes summary covers what is different in the current public build vs. older 41.x guides. This hub keeps every link in one place.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best starting occupation in Project Zomboid?
Burglar (4 free trait points + Nimble 1 + Lightfooted 2 + Sneaking 2 + free hotwiring), Veteran (no panic moodle + Aiming 2), Police Officer (Aiming 2 + Reloading 1), and Lumberjack (Strength 9 + Axe Man) are the top picks depending on play style. The occupation tier list ranks every occupation by sandbox utility; the best-occupation-trait-combinations guide covers the trait pairings that compound with each occupation.
Which traits give the most points for the least pain?
Slow Reader (no real-time cost in single-player if you AFK while reading), Smoker (just bring a lighter + cigarettes — easy to find), Weak Stomach (cook food properly + avoid raw meat), and Out of Shape (gain fitness back over weeks). The best-negative-traits guide ranks every negative trait by real-cost-vs-points; the trait synergy guide covers the combos.
When does the power and water shut off?
Default sandbox: around Day 14-30 for water, Day 14-30 for power (randomised). The exact day shows in the news ticker on day 0 and you can see countdown messages in-game. Before shutoff: fill water containers, freeze meat, build a fireplace and a generator setup. The PZ water + power survival guide covers the exact prep checklist; the generator guide covers fuel + skill + maintenance.
How do I survive the helicopter event?
The helicopter spawns around Day 6-9 (sandbox default) and attracts every zombie in a wide radius toward you for several real-life minutes. Two strategies work: (1) bunker — sit in a windowless interior, no firearms, no doors opening, until it passes; (2) flee — leave the base on foot or in a car before it locks on. Avoid firefights with attracted hordes. The full helicopter event guide covers both strategies + how to use the attractor offensively.
What changed in Build 42?
Build 42 (the current public build as of mid-2026) added: (1) basements + below-ground levels, (2) animal husbandry (cows / chickens / pigs), (3) a crafting overhaul with new tradesman-style skill branches, (4) revised wilderness foraging. The Build 42 changes summary lists every system; the animal husbandry guide and basement raids guide cover the two biggest new mechanics in depth.
