How the Tag Matching System Works
Every gem in Path of Exile 2 carries one or more tags — keywords that describe what type of skill or buff the gem provides. Examples of common tags include: Attack, Spell, Projectile, AoE, Melee, Fire, Cold, Lightning, Chaos, Minion, Duration, and Trigger.
A support gem has two tag-related properties: the tags it requires the linked skill to have, and the tags it adds to the linked skill after being applied. For a support to be linkable, the skill gem must have at least one tag that matches the support's requirement tag. If the requirement is not met, the support gem cannot be placed in the link — the gem slot will be highlighted red in the socketing interface.
This system prevents nonsensical combinations (like a Melee support on a ranged Bow skill) but it does allow nuanced pairings (like Fork Support on any Projectile skill, regardless of damage type). What Happens If Tags Don't Match
If you attempt to link a support gem to a skill gem with no shared tags, the socket interface in your equipment will not allow the link to form. Unlike Path of Exile 1, where mismatched supports simply provided no effect (wasting a socket), PoE 2 enforces the requirement at the UI level — you physically cannot socket an incompatible support.
This also applies when a support adds a conflicting requirement. For example, Brutality Support requires the Physical tag and removes all elemental and chaos damage from the linked skill. If your skill deals only fire damage, Brutality will have no damage effect (since it converts away the non-physical and there is nothing physical to boost). The gem itself will still be legally linkable if the skill has a Physical tag, but it will provide zero damage gain — a common mistake.
When in doubt, hover over the support gem and read the Requires line. If the required tag appears on your skill gem's tooltip, the link is legal. Most Important Support Gem Pairings to Know
- Spell skills + Elemental Focus: Prevents ailment application but provides a large elemental damage bonus. Best on skills where you do not rely on burning, shock, or freeze.
- AoE skills + Concentrated Effect: Shrinks area but dramatically increases damage. Ideal for boss fights; swap out for Increased AoE when mapping.
- Projectile skills + Chain/Fork: Chain bounces between targets; Fork splits the projectile. Use Chain for linear packs, Fork for tight clusters.
- Melee Attack skills + Multistrike: The skill activates 3 times per use. Exceptional for skills with strong per-hit effects (life leech, on-hit triggers).

Tags Added by Supports — Advanced Interaction
Some support gems add new tags to the linked skill, which can then unlock additional support compatibility. Trap Support adds the Trap tag to any skill it modifies — this allows Trap-exclusive supports (like Advanced Traps) to link to skills that originally lacked the Trap tag. Similarly, Totem Support adds the Totem tag, enabling Totem-specific supports.
This cascading interaction is intentional and forms the basis of some of the game's most complex build archetypes. A Fireball with Trap Support applied gains the Trap tag, making it compatible with Trap-only supports and passive nodes that state 'Trap skills deal X% more damage' — even though Fireball is not natively a trap skill.
When planning builds, consider not just which supports link to your skill today, but which supports could become available after applying a conversion support first. This is particularly relevant for Mine, Totem, and Trigger-based builds.
Frequently asked questions
Can a support gem work with multiple skills?
Yes. A support gem in a linked socket group applies to all skill gems in that group, provided each skill meets the support's tag requirement. Skills that do not share the required tag receive no benefit from the support but are not penalized.
What happens to a support's effect if the skill doesn't have the matching tag?
In Path of Exile 2, the UI prevents illegal links from being made — you cannot socket an incompatible support. If a skill partially meets requirements (for example, has Physical tag but only deals fire damage), the link is technically legal but the damage component of the support may not apply.
How do I find what tags a gem has?
