The PoE 2 Trade Site — How It Works

Path of Exile 2 uses an external trade site (pathofexile.com/trade2) rather than an in-game auction house. Players list items in their stash tabs set to 'Public' mode, and the trade site indexes those listings within seconds. Buyers find listings on the trade site and initiate trades directly in-game by whispering the seller (copy the trade whisper from the listing and paste it in-game).

The trade site is not an auction house — items are not automatically transferred. When you find a listing and send the trade whisper, you wait for the seller to respond, visit their hideout via the trade link they provide, and exchange items and currency in the trade window. The entire process typically takes 30-90 seconds per trade.

The key limitation of the PoE 2 trade system is its asynchronous nature: sellers may be offline, AFK, or in a map when you whisper. Expect 20-40% of trade whispers to go unanswered or to be declined. This is normal — have multiple listings queued and send whispers in batches for efficient shopping.

Searching for Items Effectively

The trade site search interface has two main sections: the top bar for item name and type filters, and the Advanced Filters accordion for affix-specific filtering. To find a specific rare item, use the Filters section to specify the affixes you need with minimum roll values. For example, to find a ring with T1 life and T1 cold resistance: set 'Maximum Life' to minimum 80 and 'Cold Resistance' to minimum 30.

For currency exchange, use the Currency Exchange tab on the trade site rather than the item search. This tab is specifically designed for currency-to-currency trades and shows live ratios of all orbs relative to Chaos Orbs. It also shows bulk-buy options — sellers listing entire stacks of Chaos Orbs for Divine Orbs, for example.

Sort order matters: the default 'Newest' sort shows recently listed items, which may include stale listings from sellers who are no longer online. Sort by 'Price: Low to High' to find the cheapest current listings, but expect the lowest-price listings to sometimes be from offline sellers. A practical approach is to skip the cheapest 2-3 listings and contact the 4th-5th cheapest listings which are more likely to be active.

Listing Your Items for Sale

To list items for sale, you must first set up a Public Stash Tab. Right-click any stash tab and select 'Public' to make it visible to the trade site. Then right-click any item inside that tab and select 'Set Price' to assign a price in your chosen currency. The trade site indexes public stash tabs automatically — your items will appear in search results within 1-5 minutes of being priced.

Pricing items correctly requires research. Search for the item you want to sell on the trade site and find the 10th-15th cheapest comparable listing — this represents the market price above which your item will not sell quickly. Listing 5-10% below the 10th cheapest listing guarantees fast sales. If you are not in a hurry, list at or slightly above the median price.

For bulk currency sales, list entire stacks rather than individual orbs — buyers prefer to trade in bulk. A listing of '100 Chaos Orbs for 0.5 Divine Orbs each' in the Currency Exchange tab attracts bulk buyers who want to convert their Divine Orbs into smaller currency. Bulk listing is more efficient than selling one Chaos at a time.

Trade Etiquette — Rules for Smooth Transactions

• Respond promptly to trade whispers. If you are busy or in a map, reply '@Playername one sec, finishing a map' to show you are active.
• Do not haggle on small items — if the price is listed and you contact the seller, pay the listed price. Haggling is acceptable for items priced 5+ Divine Orbs.
• Invite the buyer to your hideout, not a random area. Your hideout is always accessible from the main menu.
• Double-check the trade window before confirming. Verify currency amounts match the listed price. Scammers sometimes swap currency types in the last second.
• Cancel trades gracefully. If you decide not to sell (e.g., you received a better offer), politely decline via chat rather than leaving the trade window open.
• Do not spam whispers to the same seller. Send one whisper and wait 2-3 minutes. If unanswered, try the next listing.
• Leave positive feedback for great traders via the PoE2 community forums or Discord — it encourages good behavior in the trading ecosystem.

Using the Currency Exchange Tab

The Currency Exchange tab at pathofexile.com/trade2 is specifically designed for orb-to-orb trading. It displays live listings for all currency conversions — Chaos to Divine, Exalted to Chaos, etc. — with the ratio and available stock shown per listing.

To bulk-buy currency, enter the amount you want in the 'I Want' field and the site calculates how much you need to pay at the listed ratio. Click 'Whisper' to copy the whisper to your clipboard and send it in-game. Currency exchange trades are typically faster than item trades because both parties know exactly what they are getting.

The most useful currency exchange to monitor is the Chaos-to-Divine ratio. At league start, Divine Orbs are scarce and may cost 300+ Chaos each. By mid-league, as more players reach endgame and Divine Orbs flood the market, the ratio typically drops to 150-200 Chaos per Divine. Knowing when to convert your Chaos into Divines (or vice versa) based on the league economy cycle is a meaningful optimization for currency management.
