Chatacabra is an Amphibian monster found in the Windward Plains, particularly around the sandy basin areas in Zones 4 and 7. As an Amphibian, it is most vulnerable to Thunder element damage, with moderate weakness to Ice. Avoid Fire and Water — Chatacabra absorbs Water entirely and resists Fire moderately.

The monster's primary attack pattern involves rolling and slamming its stone-covered hump into targets, creating a brief seismic impact area. Its tongue lash and mud spit attacks are telegraphed. The stone hump is the priority break target — it's a distinct large protrusion on the monster's back, clearly visible during the fight.

Chatacabra is a relatively straightforward early-game target with a predictable attack rotation, making it ideal for practicing break targeting. Unlike more aggressive monsters, it has long recovery animations after each attack — use these windows to deal focused part-break damage to the hump.

Part Break Priority

The stone hump on Chatacabra's back is the only unique part break target. Breaking it yields Chatacabra Stone and contributes to the hump-break reward pool. Focus attacks on the central hump with downward-angled attacks during Chatacabra's prone or recovery animations. Thunder-element weapons accelerate the break due to the elemental bonus on the Amphibian's soft-hit zones.

The tail can be severed for the Chatacabra Lash — a crafting component for certain early weapons. The tail is a lower-priority target compared to the hump but worth severing if you're running a cut-type weapon (Long Sword, Dual Blades, Great Sword) since it adds a free carve.

Chatacabra's face/head is a weak zone but doesn't yield a unique part break reward — it contributes to the general post-hunt reward pool. Attacking the head is still valuable for Wound generation (25% bonus damage when wound activates) but don't prioritize it over the hump if materials are the primary goal.

Chatacabra Farming Route

Steps

1. Select a Chatacabra quest or investigation — Low Rank for early materials, High Rank for Scale+ and HR rare drops.
2. Eat a Canteen meal with Felyne Carver to increase carve count probability.
3. Head to Zone 4 where Chatacabra is typically first tracked — follow Scout Fly guidance.
4. Engage and begin attacking the stone hump immediately with Thunder weapons — target the central protrusion.
5. Continue hump attacks until it breaks (watch for the break animation and stone debris particle effect).
6. If using a cut-type weapon, rotate attacks to the tail after hump breaks for the Lash sever.
7. When Chatacabra limps and retreats to Zone 7, set a Pitfall Trap (it's an Amphibian — Pitfall, not Shock Trap).
8. Throw two Tranq Bombs to capture for the extra reward roll including Plate probability.
9. Carve the body (3 carves) and the severed tail if applicable.

Tips

• Thunder weapons are significantly more effective — even a low-tier Thunder weapon beats a higher-raw non-elemental weapon on Chatacabra.
• Use Pitfall Traps for capture — Chatacabra is an Amphibian and is caught by Pitfall Traps, not Shock Traps.
• Focus hump attacks during Chatacabra's recovery animations after its roll attack — the longest safe window in the fight.
