How Gunlance Shells Work
Gunlance shells are fixed-damage explosions that do not scale with monster hit-zone values (unlike physical weapon hits). This is the GL's defining characteristic: shelling always deals full damage regardless of whether you hit the head, body, or tail. A Normal Lv 7 shell on a monster's belly deals the same explosion damage as the same shell on the head. This makes the Gunlance uniquely effective against monsters with high physical defenses across the board.
Shell damage does scale with Artillery (the skill) and with the shell's level (Lv 1–7, determined by the weapon). Higher-tier GL weapons have higher shell levels. The Shelling ability does NOT scale with your weapon's raw attack stat (beyond a small modifier) — this means raw attack boost skills are less valuable for shell-focused Gunlance builds compared to other weapons.
Shells consume a magazine: Normal and Long hold 6 shells, Wide holds 3 shells. After the magazine is empty, you must reload with the R+Circle command before firing again. Reload time is a critical vulnerability — the animation leaves you open to attack. Use Shield Advance (walk forward while blocking) and reload during monster repositioning phases to minimize reload danger.
Wyrmstake Cannon Mechanics
The Wyrmstake Cannon is the Gunlance's ultimate attack, initiated by pressing R+Triangle after performing an upward shell finisher. The move fires a massive stake into the monster that lodges in the struck body part and ticks explosive damage for 5–8 seconds before detonating in a final blast. Wyrmstake is the single highest-damage action available to the Gunlance per animation cost.
Wyrmstake damage is affected by Artillery and shell level — same as regular shells. The stake can be lodged into any body part, but targeting wound zones (actively Wounded body parts) significantly increases tick and detonation damage. For maximum Wyrmstake damage, always create a Wound on the target body zone before lodging the stake.
After the stake fires, you can continue attacking normally. The ticking explosion damage happens passively while you poke, shell, or guard. Some advanced GL players lodge a Wyrmstake, then immediately enter a Fullburst loop to stack both the stake's ticking damage and burst fire simultaneously — this is the peak burst combo for Normal shell Gunlance builds.

Fullburst vs. Poke-Shell Playstyles
Fullburst is the Normal shell loop where you build up a combo (thrust → thrust → thrust) and end with a Fullburst (all magazine shells fired in a single burst of fire). The advantage of Fullburst is maximum total explosion damage per reload cycle and strong Wound generation from the physical thrusts. The disadvantage is that the Fullburst animation is long and vulnerable — you commit to a multi-second animation window.
Poke-Shell (most associated with Wide shells) loops a single thrust followed by a single shell, repeating quickly. The advantage is speed and flexibility — you deal damage almost continuously and can dodge or guard between each thrust-shell pair. The disadvantage is that individual shell damage is lower than Fullburst's burst, and the cycle can feel monotonous over long hunts.
For beginners, Poke-Shell is recommended for learning Gunlance because it keeps you reactive to monster behavior. Once you understand monster attack patterns and have identified safe windows, switching to Fullburst (Normal shells) or Long shell finishers provides better damage per hunt. Most experienced GL hunters prefer Normal shells and Fullburst at endgame due to the higher burst ceiling.

However, the majority of GL damage comes from shelling, which ignores element entirely. This makes the GL one of the most universally effective weapons regardless of monster elemental profile.
Which shell type is best for beginners?
Wide shell Gunlance is recommended for beginners because the Poke-Shell loop is simple to execute and keeps you reactive to monster behavior. Wide shells also have the fastest reload (only 3 shells per magazine), reducing your exposure during reload animations. Move to Normal shells and Fullburst once you're comfortable with the GL's general combat loop.
What is the difference between shell levels?
Shell levels (Lv 1–7) indicate the explosion damage potential of the shells. Higher shell levels deal more explosion damage. Shell level is a fixed property of the specific GL weapon — you can't upgrade it with skills. Progression to higher-tier GL weapons naturally increases your shell level. Can the Gunlance block effectively?
Yes. Gunlance has one of the best guard-based defense profiles in the game. With Guard Lv 5, it blocks most attacks with minimal chip damage and no knockback. How important is Wyrmstake Cannon?
Wyrmstake Cannon is a very high-damage tool but requires setup (upward thrust → shell → R+△). Does Gunlance require frequent weapon sharpening?
Physical thrust attacks deplete weapon sharpness normally. Shell explosions do not consume sharpness. For Fullburst-heavy builds with frequent thrusts, sharpening is required every few minutes. For shell-heavy builds (fewer thrusts), sharpness lasts longer. Maintain at least Blue sharpness for physical hits to avoid bouncing; aim for White or Purple in endgame for damage bonuses on the thrust component.
