How the Switch Axe's Two Modes Work
The Switch Axe is built around a dynamic mode-switching system. Axe Mode is your mobile, reach-heavy form: its wide swings cover a large area, you can move while attacking, and landing axe hits charges the phial gauge. Axe Mode is where you spend most of your mobility time — chasing monsters, repositioning after attacks, and building the resource needed for Sword Mode burst damage.
Sword Mode is the explosive payoff. Each sword hit triggers phial explosions that add bonus elemental or raw damage depending on the phial type embedded in the Switch Axe. Sword Mode has shorter range and less mobility than Axe Mode, but its damage density is significantly higher when you are locked onto a monster's weak point. The goal is to spend as much time as possible in Sword Mode on a wound or weak body part.
Transition between modes fluidly using the morph attack (which deals damage itself) or by pressing the morph input mid-combo. Skilled Switch Axe hunters weave mode transitions into their attack patterns rather than switching modes as a separate action. Axe-to-Sword morphs while hitting the monster keep momentum going and deal damage during the transition animation.
Amped State and Zero Sum Discharge
Amped State is the Switch Axe's powered-up mode, reached by filling the phial gauge completely while in Sword Mode. In Amped State, charged attacks become available (Enhanced Charged Double Slash, for example) and the visual effects on the sword intensify. Amped State has a duration — indicated by a glowing gauge that drains over time or with special attacks — so timing your Zero Sum Discharge during Amped State is critical.
Zero Sum Discharge is the Switch Axe's signature finisher: you grapple onto the monster's body, embed the sword, and unleash a continuous stream of phial explosions directly into the monster before backflipping away. It deals enormous burst damage concentrated on a single body part, making it ideal for targeting wounds or monster heads during stagger windows. You cannot move during ZSD so timing is everything — use it after a trap, KO, or when the monster is in a prolonged recovery animation.
Power Prolonger skill extends the duration of Amped State, giving you more time to use charged attacks and find the right ZSD window. This skill is essential for Switch Axe because rushing ZSD at a bad moment (when the monster is about to move) wastes most of the damage potential. More Amped State time equals more ZSD opportunities.
Endgame Switch Axe Build
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Power Phial Switch Axe with highest raw (Artian or monster-craft) | Power phials scale with raw attack and skills; always preferred |
| Head | Arkveld Helm (Weakness Exploit 2) | Core affinity on wounds |
| Chest | Doshaguma Mail (Offensive Guard 2) | Unlocks counter-bonus on Axe counters |
| Arms | Arkveld Braces (Weakness Exploit 1, Power Prolonger 1) | Double-dip skill sources |
| Waist | Chatacabra Coil (Power Prolonger 2) | Amped State duration critical here |
| Legs | Arkveld Greaves (Critical Boost 2) | Maximize crit conversion |
| Talisman | Offensive Guard +1 or Power Prolonger +2 | Depend on remaining caps |
| Key Decos | Tenderizer (WEX), Maintenance (Power Prolonger), Offensive Guard Deco | Fill all available Level 2–3 decoration slots |
Optimal Combat Loop
- Start in Axe Mode: open with Overhead Slash → Rising Slash → Axe attacks to build phials and land initial hits.
- Morph to Sword Mode when phials are charged: use the morph attack (dealing damage on transition) then continue with Sword Mode combo.
- Land consecutive Sword Mode hits on the monster's wound or weak point — each hit triggers a phial explosion for bonus damage.
- When phials approach full and Sword Mode gauge is high, watch for the Amped State activation (visual/audio cue).
- In Amped State, look for a large opening (KO, trap, monster stumble) to land Zero Sum Discharge. Attach during the window, spam the explosion, and backflip free.
- After ZSD, quickly morph back to Axe Mode to rebuild phials and repeat from step 1.
Offensive Guard and Counter Play
Offensive Guard is a skill unique to Switch Axe (and Lance/Gunlance). It grants an attack bonus for a few seconds after performing a perfect guard — successfully blocking a monster's attack with the counter input. Switch Axe has a Guard input in Axe Mode that triggers this window. Landing Offensive Guard 3 gives a noticeable raw attack boost that stacks with everything else in the build.
The Axe Mode's Wild Swing (holding the attack button) and the new Counter Morph Slash (blocking in Axe Mode then immediately morphing to Sword) are the primary ways to proc Offensive Guard mid-hunt. Counter Morph Slash is particularly efficient because it guards the attack, triggers Offensive Guard, and immediately enters Sword Mode for burst damage — all in one fluid motion.
Frequently asked questions
What phial type is best for Switch Axe?
Power Phial is the best general-purpose option because it adds flat raw damage to all Sword Mode hits regardless of monster elemental weakness. Element phials can outperform Power phials when specifically matched (correct element vs. high weakness monster), but Power phials are simpler to optimize around and remain competitive across all content.
How do I safely land Zero Sum Discharge?
Use ZSD during guaranteed safe windows: after a Paralysis or Sleep proc, after a Pitfall or Shock Trap, after a Stun (KO), or after a wound pop stagger. Do not attempt ZSD on a mobile monster mid-combo — the grapple can be interrupted if the monster repositions, dealing no damage and leaving you exposed.
Is Switch Axe good for solo play?
Yes. Switch Axe is excellent solo because Axe Mode's mobility lets you chase and reposition, while Sword Mode's burst means you can capitalize quickly when the monster gives you openings. ZSD is also more reliably executable solo since you control the pace of the hunt without partner coordination.
Does Power Prolonger affect Sword Mode or just Amped State?
Power Prolonger extends the duration of Sword Mode's enhanced state (the powered-up timer when the blade is glowing), which includes Amped State. It does not affect basic Sword Mode (which has no time limit), only the powered portion that enables ZSD and charged Sword attacks.
Can Switch Axe guard against attacks?
Switch Axe has a guard option in Axe Mode but it is not as strong as dedicated guard weapons (Lance, Gunlance). The main value of the guard input is proccing Offensive Guard skill. Do not rely on the guard for surviving high-damage attacks — prioritize dodging heavy hits instead.
