The Spirit Gauge System
The Long Sword's defining mechanic is its Spirit Gauge, a color-coded meter at the bottom of the screen that tracks your spirit energy. It has three levels: white, yellow, and red, each granting a cumulative +10% attack bonus. At red level (all three tiers filled), your Long Sword is operating at maximum base power. The Spirit Gauge is built up by landing hits in Spirit Blade combos and by successfully landing the Foresight Slash counter.
The Spirit Roundslash is both a damage move and a gauge management tool. When you execute a Spirit Roundslash at red gauge, it deals a significant burst of damage and then resets back to yellow (losing one tier but keeping the damage bonus of that tier). If you miss the Roundslash, you can fall all the way back to white. This creates a gameplay loop of building to red, spending the Roundslash for damage, rebuilding, and spending again — rewarding rhythm and consistency.
New to Monster Hunter Wilds, the Special Sheathe stance allows Long Sword hunters to enter a guard stance from which they can counter into powerful Spirit attacks. This adds another layer of counter-play on top of the classic Foresight Slash, giving Long Sword multiple defensive options to maintain offensive pressure without taking damage.
Key Combos Step by Step
- Spirit Blade Combo (gauge builder): Triangle → Triangle → Triangle → R2 (Spirit Blade I → II → III → Spirit Roundslash). This is the foundational loop; land all four hits to gain gauge and deal damage.
- Foresight Slash Counter (i-frame counter): While an enemy attack is incoming, press back + R2 to dodge through it, then R2 again immediately for the Spirit Thrust follow-up. A successful Foresight Slash boosts Spirit level by one and deals solid damage.
- Helm Breaker Finisher: During a Spirit Roundslash combo (at the top of your jump after a Spirit Slash III), press R2 at the peak to trigger Helm Breaker — a high-arc vault followed by a powerful descending slash. Aim for the head or a wound for maximum damage.
- Special Sheathe Counter (new in Wilds): Press the Special Sheathe input to enter stance → wait for enemy attack → counter input triggers a powerful Spirit attack. Can be used as an alternative to Foresight Slash when you need more recovery.
- Fade Slash Reposition: Press back + Triangle at any time to perform a Fade Slash — a backward-leaping cut that creates distance quickly. Follow with a dash to reposition for the next Spirit Blade combo.

Skill Priorities for Long Sword
Weakness Exploit is the top priority skill for Long Sword because the weapon's Spirit combos naturally lead hunters to target the same body part repeatedly — the exact behavior needed to create Wounds. At rank 3, WEX gives 30% affinity on weak points plus 15% on Wounds, meaning on a freshly created wound on a weak spot you gain up to 45% affinity from one skill. Combined with a high-affinity Long Sword base, this pushes your crit rate past 90%.
Critical Eye fills the remaining affinity gap cheaply through decorations. Every 1% affinity is worth slightly less the higher you climb, but getting from 75% to 95% affinity (the practical cap you want) via Critical Eye gems is efficient. Critical Boost 3 then multiplies the value of all those crits from 25% to 40% bonus damage — a significant DPS increase once your crit rate is high.
Quick Sheathe is a Long Sword quality-of-life skill that reduces the sheathe animation time. Long Sword hunters sheathe frequently to access draw attacks and the Special Sheathe stance. Shorter sheathe time means more offensive time. At level 3, sheathing is fast enough that the draw-attack opener into Spirit combos becomes a near-seamless loop.
Advanced Long Sword Tips
- Always try to maintain Red Spirit Gauge — at Red level your damage bonus is at maximum, and a mishandled Spirit Roundslash only drops you to Yellow rather than resetting fully.
- Use the Special Sheathe stance against monsters with long predictable attacks like tail sweeps and breath beams — the counter window is generous and the follow-up damage is high.
- Combine Helm Breaker with Wounds: position so your aerial descent lands directly on the wound for the +25% bonus on top of Helm Breaker's already high multiplier.
- In multiplayer, Long Sword's wide sweep attacks frequently cause Flinch Shots on teammates — equip Flinch Free 1 yourself and ask teammates to do the same.
- Fade Slash is not just a repositioning tool — its hitbox is active the whole way through, so use it to hit the monster while simultaneously moving to a safer position.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep the Spirit Gauge from depleting over time?
The Spirit Gauge drains slowly if you do not attack. Keep landing hits in Spirit Blade combos, use Foresight Slash counters whenever possible, and maintain offensive pressure. Staying sheathed for extended periods is the main cause of gauge loss. If the monster runs away, use your Seikret to chase immediately.
Is the Long Sword the best solo weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Long Sword is extremely strong solo because its counter mechanics (Foresight Slash, Special Sheathe) let it deal damage while avoiding attacks rather than simply dodging away. It is one of the most consistent solo performers. Great Sword edges it out for raw burst, but Long Sword wins on sustained, safe DPS.
What is the Helm Breaker and when should I use it?
Helm Breaker is an aerial finisher accessed during Spirit Roundslash combos. At the peak of the jump, press R2 to trigger the descending slash. Use it on monster heads for KO accumulation or on Wounds for massive damage. It is your highest single-move damage output after TCS equivalents, so save it for clear windows when the monster is grounded.
Does Weakness Exploit work with Long Sword Spirit combos?
Yes. Every hit of the Spirit Blade combo counts independently for Weakness Exploit. As long as each hit lands on a weak point (3-star hit zone) or an active Wound, each hit benefits from the affinity bonus. This is why Long Sword gains an outsized benefit from WEX — it hits many times, and each hit can critically strike.
Can I block with the Long Sword?
The Long Sword cannot block in the traditional sense, but Foresight Slash and the Special Sheathe counter both provide invincibility frames during their dodge/counter phases. Timing these counters correctly effectively replaces blocking. For true blocking, weapons like the Sword & Shield or Lance are more appropriate.
