How Silksong is different from Hollow Knight 1
If you finished Hollow Knight, the muscle memory you built up will trick you in Silksong. The combat looks similar but the timing, healing system, and equipment economy were rebuilt from scratch around Hornet. Trying to play her like the Knight is the single biggest reason new players bounce off the first two bosses.
Hornet does not channel-Focus to heal — she Binds, which is instant. She does not slot Charms — she slots Crests, which lock you into a fighting style. Her needle has a downstrike but no nail-art system, and her air mobility is far better than the Knight's right out of the gate. Internalize these four things and the first ten hours go much smoother.

Silk: how the new healing economy actually works
Silk is the resource that powers everything Hornet does outside of basic needle attacks. You earn it back by hitting enemies — every clean hit refills a small amount of silk into your gauge. Bind costs 9 silk and restores one mask of HP instantly, so the math is simple: trade hits for silk, spend silk on Bind when you have a safe window. There is no long channel to interrupt.
But silk also fuels your active tools. A red attack tool (offensive — like Throwing Pin or Sting Shard) costs silk to use. A blue support tool (Pinstool, Drifter's Cloak) costs silk to deploy. Yellow utility tools (lockpicks, traps) tend to be silk-free but limited-quantity. The trade-off is constant: should I spend this silk on a tool to deal extra damage, or hold it in case I need to Bind a mask?
Early game, lean on Bind. You die a lot in the first three bosses and need every recovery you can get. Once you have your silk capacity upgrade and a clean tool rotation, you can shift to spending more silk on tools and Bind only when you actually drop below 3 masks.
Picking your first Crest
You start with the Hunter Crest equipped. It is balanced and works for any playstyle. You will unlock additional Crests as you progress: Reaper (high damage, scythe-style sweeping attacks), Wanderer (mobility-heavy, more silk regen), Witch (caster-style, magical tool affinity), and others as you reach the mid-game.
For your first 6-8 hours, just stay on Hunter. The big mistake new players make is switching to Reaper as soon as it drops because it sounds aggressive, but Reaper has a slower attack arc and changes your hitbox in ways that get you killed against Lace and Sister Splinter. Master Hunter first, then experiment.
Crests slot 3-4 tools depending on the Crest. You buy tools from vendors (mostly Frey in Bone Bottom and later Pebb in Greymoor) and unlock them from chests. Tools are upgradable in Tool Stations scattered through Pharloom.
Your first hour checklist (Bone Bottom)
- Run through the tutorial Moss Grotto path until you reach Bone Bottom. The Hunter Crest is equipped automatically — do not change it.

- Find the Wandering Pilgrim in the upper Bone Bottom rest area to start the Mister Mosaic quest line — its rewards scale with how early you start it.
- Head north into Moss Grotto. The Moss Mother fight is your first real boss test. Stick-and-move, Bind when she telegraphs the long wind-up slam.
- After Moss Mother, take the elevator down to Marrow and start mapping. Buy a quill from Belltown's cartographer (Shakra in Bellhart, accessible after Moss Mother) — without a quill, your map will not auto-update at rest points.

Early-game mistakes that will get you killed
- Trying to Focus-heal like in HK1 — Bind is instant, just press the heal button when there's any window at all.
- Hoarding rosaries instead of buying tools. Tools matter more than savings in the first 5 hours; you will earn rosaries back from any bench-respawned enemy run.
- Skipping the silk capacity upgrade at Mooncrest (250 rosaries). Going from 27 to 36 silk is a 33% increase in your total heal potential — buy it the moment you can afford it.
- Ignoring downstrike (pogo) — Hornet downstrikes off enemies and spikes for free vertical mobility, and many secret rooms require it.
- Switching Crests every time you find a new one. Each Crest has a learning curve and changes your hitbox; commit to one for a full Act before experimenting.
- Trying to clear every area in order. Silksong is more forgiving about backtracking than HK1 — if a boss is wrecking you, leave, gain a tool, come back.
The first three bosses and how to read them
Moss Mother is a teaching fight — she has long wind-ups for every attack and is the developer's way of asking you to practice Bind timing. Stay middle of the arena, dodge her sweep, get 2-3 hits in, retreat, Bind when needed.
The Bell Beast (you meet it in Marrow) is an optional miniboss but the reward (a Bell heart, used to upgrade silk capacity) is essential. It dies in roughly 20 hits with Straight Pin support; bring full silk.
Lace, the duelist on the rooftop, is the first real difficulty wall. She has fast tracking attacks, a parry mechanic, and chains combos. The trick: she telegraphs every attack with a foot-sweep stance change. Watch her lower body, not her sword. You will need ~40 attempts the first time; that is normal.
After the first 5 hours: next steps
- Have at least 36 silk capacity (Mooncrest upgrade purchased).
- Have killed Moss Mother and Lace; map of Moss Grotto, Marrow, and Bone Bottom fully purchased from Shakra.

What happens when I die in Silksong?

Can I respec my Crest choice?
Yes. At any rest point, you can swap Crests freely from any Crest you've unlocked. You cannot mix tools between Crest layouts — each Crest has its own saved layout — but switching Crests is instant and free. Try different Crests against bosses if you are stuck.
